The Color Purple
The Color Purple | Alice Walker
Alice Walkers masterpiece, a powerful novel of courage in the face of oppressionCelie has grown up in rural Georgia, navigating a childhood of ceaseless abuse. Not only is she poor and despised by the society around her, shes badly treated by her family. As a teenager she begins writing letters directly to God in an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear. Her letters span twenty years and record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment through the guiding light of a few strong women and her own implacable will to find harmony with herself and her home. The Color Purples deeply inspirational narrative, coupled with Walkers prodigious talent as a stylist and storyteller, have made the novel a contemporary classic of American letters. This ebook featuresa new introduction written by the author on the twenty-fifth anniversary of publication, and an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

I never would have read this had we not seen the musical this summer. Both were amazing.

This novel was so good. But…it was a lot. And, a lot dark, often. But so, so good.

Grateful as always, to be shown my white privilege and be given the opportunity to learn.

Not gonna lie, at the beginning, I almost put this book down; it was just full of sad and confusing dialogue and graphics. Once I got through the beginning, though, it got better. Such a interesting story of a lost and lonely girl finding herself in a world of abuse and oppression.

"I think the foundation of everything in my life is wonder."
#OnThisDay in 1944, Alice Walker was born. In 1982, Walker became the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize, for her seminal work The Color Purple. Her 1975 piece for Ms magazine "In Search of Zora" is credited as reviving interest in Zora Neale Hurston's work, which had faded into obscurity. Because women supporting women is the best way. #HistoryGetsLIT

BiblioLitten I didn‘t know the last bit. Such an uplifting and humane thing to do. I love her book The Colour Purple 💜 8mo
TheKidUpstairs @BiblioLitten I didn't know it before either! She went searching for where Hurston had been buried, found her unmarked grave and paid for a stone declaring her "Genius of the South". The piece brought a lot of attention to her work, and now her writing is considered American Canon! 8mo

I LOVED this book. I went into it knowing very little and picked it up on a whim, I'm so glad I did. For a book written forty years ago it holds up really well and is quite relevant in current times. This is one where I needed to highlight favorite passages and I feel like I could read this multiple times and get different pearls of wisdom everytime. This book is completely heartbreaking, thoughtful and hopeful leaving readers left in wonder.

Banned Books Week officially starts today! 🎉

Each day this week I'm going to post about a book that has been banned to help spread awareness about how book censorship is still such a huge issue! With that school in York, PA coming under fire recently for banning all those books featuring POC, now more than ever we have to fight for the freedom to read! 💕📚💕

The Color Purple was banned for sexual content and LGBTQ content!

Sometimes you can tell from the very beginning that a book will change you, and this is one of those. I never really knew what this book was about, just that it was “important.” And that Oprah was in the 1980s movie adaptation. I was not prepared for the emotions this story and Walker‘s writing had on me as she tackles the themes of gender-based violence, the cycle of racism/abuse, the power of female friendships, redemption, & self discovery. 5⭐️

The core message I took away from The Color Purple was not, despite the challenging content, “doesn‘t life suck for people of colour”. Instead, it was to marvel at the strength and power of relationships between women. All told, The Color Purple is a brilliant and very moving work of art, one well worth a read (and probably at least one or two re-reads, come to that). This book talks about so many things: sexual aggression; domestic violence; discrimination suffered by women in the US; discrimination suffered by women in Africa; racial discrimination; the exploitation of Africa by colonialism; love, sexuality, self discovery, religion, redemption...all in a little more than 200 pages and, somehow, Alice Walker manages to not make you feel overwhelmed and to give you hope.

This wasn't in any way what I expected! This starts off a brutal story about 2 sisters, young black women, and how they survive their unhappy life in the South. It grows into a narrative about family, both found/chosen and the beauty of reuniting with relatives. A reminder that life, and love, can be messy, but that doesn't mean there isn't good to be found. These characters were wonderful. And I always love an epistolary novel

I read this shortly after I saw the film in the late ‘80s. It has been challenged by many high schools for sexual content, language, homosexuality, race relations... but I think the average HS senior can handle the themes and would benefit from studying the text.

3⭐ - I wanted to love this book so much more than I did 😩 I remember loving the movie back in 1985 and while I enjoyed the first half, the epistolary format didn't work for me as an audiobook and the second half dragged quite a bit for me. Dare I say it?? I liked the movie better. 😳

Finished reading this beautiful, heartbreaking book by Alice Walker and absolutely loved it. This book is about an African American girl Celie who is abused all her life. Celie‘s life is worse than that of a prisoner until she decides to turn her life around and take charge of her destiny. I loved 2 things about the book- first the ending when Celie finally gets what she rightly deserves and second the strong female characters, crazy but strong😅

This is a great story that is well told. I loved the characters and the descriptions. I could really visualise the story. Unfortunately I think that sometimes the hype that surrounds a book leads the reader to feel a bit underwhelmed. And as much as I hate to say it this was one such book for me. Don't let this put you off, its still a great read and I will look to read another book by Alice Walker.

It almost feels a bit wrong to say I enjoyed this book, because it was tough. Though not overly graphic, the things that happen are just brutal. It still feels relevant (unfortunately), both regarding racism and sexism, and I think Walker did a great job of writing Celie, and making her a nuanced, evolving, and interesting human.

The Danish audio wasn‘t good, though, which is a shame 👎

Kalalalatja @Cinfhen it is definitely worth it, but it is dark, just so you are warned. @batsy I have seen a lot of reviews saying that they loved the language, and that‘s where the Danish translation falls short. It says in a note from the translater, that the dialect and accents haven‘t been translated, but I have a feeling it is a pretty big part of the book? 2y
batsy @Kalalalatja Yes, it does add beautiful rhythm to the book. Her prose itself is really rich even in the descriptions, etc. But very succint and not flowery. That's sad that it didn't quite come off in the translation. 2y
