Orphan Train
Orphan Train: A Novel | Christina Baker Kline
Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude? As a young Irish immigrant, Vivian Daly was one such child, sent by rail from New York City to an uncertain future a world away. Returning east later in life, Vivian leads a quiet, peaceful existence on the coast of Maine, the memories of her upbringing rendered a hazy blur. But in her attic, hidden in trunks, are vestiges of a turbulent past.Seventeen-year-old Molly Ayer knows that a community-service position helping an elderly widow clean out her attic is the only thing keeping her out of juvenile hall. But as Molly helps Vivian sort through her keepsakes and possessions, she discovers that she and Vivian aren't as different as they appear. A Penobscot Indian who has spent her youth in and out of foster homes, Molly is also an outsider being raised by strangers, and she, too, has unanswered questions about the past.Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, Orphan Train is a powerful tale of upheaval and resilience, second chances, and unexpected friendship.

I loved this story so much! A young girl is orphaned and is sent on an orphan train to the West. The trials that she endures are horrible. The story I intersects with a girl in modern times. The old woman and girl somehow bond. Highly recommend.

An interesting novel based both historically and at present detailing a compelling fictional account of the experience of children put into Children's Aid Societies in the states. An interesting telling of the story. I am happy I read it but probably would not read it again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

The book was certainly readable with quality writing but most of the story was underwhelming for me.

Lines from Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline:

“With her bright button eyes and pointy snout nosing into Molly‘s business, Lori reminds her of a ferret.”

“Lori gives her a tight smile. A ferrety smile.”

I don‘t think I like what this is implying about ferrets!

It was amazing and so easy to read! I didn‘t care for the language and the sexual assault shook me up, but overall an amazing read. It ended really happily, which for me was a huge plus. 4/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow!!!!! What an emotionally charged page turner! I loved this book so much that I thought about it when I wasn't reading it. I brought it with me to work to read on breaks, and even took it with me inside Lowe's to read while my husband shopped. This would be a fantastic book club selection.

I loved the history in this book. Being from MN it was extremely interesting to read about something I previously had no knowledge of. I also loved the character development with the author switching between the two main characters throughout the chapters. It was a joy to read and I was unable to put it down. Literally went to the bathroom with it and read it from cover to cover while doing everyday activities. Food in one hand book in the other!

Day 7 #adventrecommends

Between 1854 & 1929, orphan trains ran across the US with abandoned & needy children with the purpose of finding them homes, however the results were often not good. Although a child could end up happy, they could also be used for hard labor or abused. This fictional account centers around Vivian & her life experiences from orphanhood to adulthood. Although sad at times, this is a wonderful read!

I really enjoyed this book. As a child welfare social worker, the way these children were treated bothers me on a level that chills my bones, it‘s heartbreaking. This book began really well, I enjoyed most of it. The language and character development was superb. However, I feel the ending was very rushed. It was if the editor said, “ok time‘s up” and the author threw together a quick wrap up.

Crazeedi Excellent book 6mo
Allthebookclubs Yes it was! My great great grandfather was adopted from an orphan train. It‘s so sad to hear the many stories of how those children were treated. 6mo

I really enjoyed discovering the story of the orphan trains through this historical fiction. It's a well written, entertaining book. However, I would have preferred if it was all about Vivian... (This afternoon, I had a great tea party with delicious macaroons)

As part of a school project on portaging, Molly weaves together the story of a 92 year old Vivian. From her days in Ireland, to her foster placements, and present day, Molly discovers the hardships that children on the orphan train went through, and the joys of family and connections.

Although I much preferred Vivian‘s side of the story to Molly‘s, this was a good read and seems to be well researched!

After reading two depressing mysteries (Magpie Murders and All the Missing girls—great novels; it‘s just very depressing on human beings) it is nice to see a happy ending (ish) here! Yes the humans here in this book have experienced much cruelty from other humans but I love how they evolve and grow.

A story of two girls living a similar life decades apart. Vivian‘s journey begins in the 1920s and converges with Molly‘s in 2011. As each recounts their childhood, they find sympathy and healing in each other. A gripping story of family, loss and self preservation.

I really enjoyed this story. It made me appreciate growing up with wonderful parents and grandparents even more.
