Jane Steele
Jane Steele | Lyndsay Faye
A reimagining of Jane Eyre as a gutsy, heroic serial killer, from the author whose work The New York Times described as “riveting” and The Wall Street Journal called “thrilling.”   “Young Jane Steele’s favorite book, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, mirrors her life both too little and too much…In an arresting tale of dark humor and sometimes gory imagination, Faye has produced a heroine worthy of the gothic literature canon but reminiscent of detective fiction.”—Library Journal, Starred Review“Reader, I murdered him.”   A sensitive orphan, Jane Steele suffers first at the hands of her spiteful aunt and predatory cousin, then at a grim school where she fights for her very life until escaping to London, leaving the corpses of her tormentors behind her. After years of hiding from the law while penning macabre “last confessions” of the recently hanged, Jane thrills at discovering an advertisement.  Her aunt has died and her childhood home has a new master: Mr. Charles Thornfield, who seeks a governess.   Burning to know whether she is in fact the rightful heir, Jane takes the position incognito, and learns that Highgate House is full of marvelously strange new residents—the fascinating but caustic Mr. Thornfield, an army doctor returned from the Sikh Wars, and the gracious Sikh butler Mr. Sardar Singh, whose history with Mr. Thornfield appears far deeper and darker than they pretend. As Jane catches ominous glimpses of the pair’s violent history and falls in love with the gruffly tragic Mr. Thornfield, she faces a terrible dilemma: can she possess him—body, soul, and secrets—without revealing her own murderous past?   A satirical romance about identity, guilt, goodness, and the nature of lies, by a writer who Matthew Pearl calls “superstar-caliber” and whose previous works Gillian Flynn declared “spectacular,” Jane Steele is a brilliant and deeply absorbing book inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s classic Jane Eyre. From the Hardcover edition.

“Reader, I murdered him.”

Jane Eyre meets #MeToo meets Dexter. A rollicking good time with a heroine who is not going to put up with men‘s bad behavior.

Loved it!

Running a bit behind today. I thought of a #SweetJane being Jane Austen, Jane Bennet & Jane Eyre, but then I decided to go with the opposite & pick the decidedly less sweet Jane Steele. This imagining of Jane Eyre as a serial killer is a fun read. ❤️

Cinfhen Great pick!!! I was also thinking about all the retellings and the antithesis of #sweetJane 🤗like 1mo

This was so good that I listened to the whole book all yesterday.

Jane Eyre meets Dexter meets a bit of Sherlockian mystery.

Plot and writing kept me tied to my headphones all day.

#AudioEggColouring and balcony cleaning ? (I like the paper towel more than the eggs. Maybe I should dry it and frame it?)

This book is much more interesting.

"Reader I murdered him."

gradcat So pretty, and I agree...the towel is beautiful! 😂 4mo
rretzler When my older son was in preschool, his class did watercolors on a paper towel. It turned out to be a gorgeous abstract with the colors matching those in Kandinsky‘s Yellow-Red-Blue - a print of which we have hanging above the fireplace. This wasn‘t a retelling of Jane Eyre so much as it was a slightly campy, loving, homage. Told in three sections from the perspective of our ‘killer‘ heroine, there are many moving parts, which all come together nicely in the end. It is a very entertaining and satisfying read. I would recommend this to fans of Bronte, historical fiction, crime, suspense and romance. #HistoricalFiction

Kalalalatja @Mdargusch it really worked for me! I‘m a bit surprised, I hadn‘t expected much from it, but it was so good! @Cinfhen especially retellings of novels! Fairytale retellings often work better imo, but I often stay away from retellings of classics. I haven‘t read any of the Austen Project retellings, because all the reviews seem kinda meh 👎 13mo
Kalalalatja @staci.reads I completely agree! It was its own story, but at the same time, I liked how Faye didn‘t try to hide how the book was inspired by Jane Eyre. Sometimes retellings often feel like they have to be seperated from the original, and that can be just as bad as times! 13mo

Tonight, I pulled together a tentative reading stack for the #24in48 #readathon on July 21-22. I need to catch up on the #agathachristieclub , so I think the readathon will be dedicated to Dame Agatha. The tagged book I started years ago and had to put down, but absolutely loved it, so am eager to pick it up again.

I have a family obligation that Sunday, so will also incorporate an audiobook into the mix.
