"The End We Start From is strange and powerful, and very apt for these uncertain times. I was moved, terrified, uplifted - sometimes all three at once. It takes skill to manage that, and Hunter has a poet's understanding of how to make each word count."--Tracy Chevalier Pre-empted by publishers around the world within days of the 2016 London Book Fair, The End We Start From marks the arrival of Megan Hunter, a dazzling and unique literary talent. Hunter's debut is a searing original, a modern-day parable of rebirth and renewal, of maternal bonds, and the instinct to survive and thrive in the absence of all that's familiar. As London is submerged below flood waters, a woman gives birth to her first child, Z. Days later, she and her baby are forced to leave their home in search of safety. They head north through a newly dangerous country seeking refuge from place to place. The story traces fear and wonder, as the baby grows, thriving and content against all the odds. Written with poise and poeticism, The End We Start From is an indelible and elemental debut--a lyrical vision of the strangeness and beauty of new motherhood, and a tale of endurance in the face of ungovernable change.

#WanderingJune #LondonCalling In present day, London is slowly being submerged by relentless rains and people fear the end of the world is drawing near. An unnamed woman goes into labor, delivering her child named Z. Wanting to save Z, husband and wife risk fleeing London for higher ground. Chaos, confusion, resentment and turmoil ensues. I received both lovely editions as bday gifts last year. Thanks to @RachelO @TrishB 💙💙

I read this for #Booked2019 - Clifi

Quick read, only 120 pages and it is not written like your typical book. No one has a name. The unnamed narrator has a baby while London is starting to get flooded and come under water. The story is about her journey and her child growing up. A lot is purposely vague and you don‘t really know what happened. She meets different people who help her get through this while all the resources dry up.

4thhouseontheleft The Clifi genre seems to have growing pains, most of the reviews I have seen for the prompt are only so-so. 2mo
Laughterhp @4thhouseontheleft Well that‘s good to know. I don‘t think I‘ve really read a clifi book before this. I had to look at lists online to find one. 2mo

I must have jinxed myself with my last post. 😂 Oh, well. This wasn‘t bad or anything, it was just okay. I like the style it was written in and the juxtaposition of new motherhood and catastrophe. Unfortunately, I just felt like the story held me too much at a distance which kept me from really feeling for the characters.

A short but powerful dystopian story that really makes you think. The UK is underwater due to rapidly rising sea levels & this book explores the story of one woman coping with motherhood, love, loss & chaos all at the same time. Don't go in expecting full descriptive paragraphs and lengthy dialogue because that's not what you'll find. I really liked this one so it's 5 stars from me.

My full review is up on my blog now 📚

I loved this tiny book. I loved its sparseness, its elegance and the trust it offered to the reader to fill on the gaps. This is the ultimate literary lesson in the less is more rule, something more writers should heed.

This was short, intense, lyrical and beautiful. But it just didn‘t touch me 🤷‍♀️

On the night the world is flooded, a child is born and a mother is formed. As the MC‘s focus is on her newborn, so is the reader‘s focus moved from the dystopian disaster to the bonding between mother and child, which was the best part of the book. If it had just made me feel SOMETHING this would have been a pick.

I forgot to post yesterday. #TheDayAfterTomorrow reminded me of this apocalyptic book by Megan Hunter. It's a very slim book, the writing is poetically weird and the story stayed with me for a very long time.

Today's prompt reminded me of a book on my #TBR. #BonjourMadame

I started this #audiobook during my #audiowalk today for the #25infive #readathon! (Currently at 3/25 hours between 3 books.) It‘s very lyrical and quiet and unemotional, for an end-of-the-world type of book. I like it so far! Just as the new mother focuses on her baby rather than the world ending, so does the reader.

Side note- North Carolina is so green! It‘s jarring but nice!

The writing here is sparse and lyrical, and the plot is intriguing. But there is not much connection to the characters, and I found the quirks of only calling them by letters rather than names frustrating. It is so short that it is hard to really develop a relationship with the work, but the writing is poetic.

Thanks to some serious jet lag {literally} I‘ve finished my first read for #backpackEurope 🇬🇧This novella didn‘t work for me. A woman gives birth to her first child, Z in the midst of an apocalyptic flood that submerges most of London forcing residents to flee the city and seek shelter elsewhere. Mother, child, son escape to higher ground as sleepless nights, changing bodies, frayed nerves & dire circumstances become their new landscape. 👇🏼

Cinfhen Without any dialogue, story structure, or naming of characters ( people are assigned an initial) we track the narrator‘s early days of motherhood as she learns what it means to be a parent in an unsafe and unknown world. This should have been brilliant but it was bleh, meh and sparse. Very unsatisfactory ( although, I will admit I‘m majorly cranky!!!) 13mo
Cinfhen Thanks @TrishB for the gift, sorry I didn‘t love it. Can I move on @JenP !?!? I was thinking of taking a train to Scotland ??? 13mo

1 star. I don‘t recommend reading it.It was a fast paced read and I am not really sure how I feel about it. It left me very confused. I found it odd that the author decided not to name any of the characters, they were known as a capital letter. It didn‘t even really seem like a story to me, just a bunch of notes written. If the book would have been any longer, I would not have finished reading.

Haunting, intriguing and written in absolutely beautiful prose in places feel like poetry. Really shows the unconditional love a mother has for her child.

A lovely and powerful book about a woman who gives birth as society and the world around her collapse. Her anchor is her new child and her husband as she is pushed from her home into a refugee camp. This is very much a story about new motherhood within a distant frame of turmoil. Hunter uses language sparingly and her prose reads more like poetry. I loved it ❤

Stunning. This is definitely a case of right book right time. The plot, such as it was, was secondary to the beauty of the language and the insights into new motherhood. There's a story here, a hint of dystopia, but it's vague and distant, revealed sparsely or not at all. This is essentially poetry masquerading as a novel, and I am so into it.

I finished this slim and spare book in less time than it took my husband to watch a film on Netflix but it has lingered in my mind much longer. Ostensibly a post-apocalyptic tale, this novel is really about new motherhood at its most intense and isolating. Really quite affecting.

While I was initially transfixed by the gorgeous poetic prose and the absence of dystopian world-building, these things eventually flipped to become flaws in this intriguing failure of a novella. The language drew too much attention to itself and cast too much gauze over the story. By the end, as many oh-so-precious sentences were bombing as not. Still, evidence of a literary talent worth following.
