… and all the magical children he saved and created a family for, and the unconditional love he gave them.

I love this book more every time I read it.

Only @dabbe and I get to complain about the heat !Or Death Valley people or other Phoenicians! Note 100 at 11 pm. This is WTF heat

CindyMyLifeIsLit Is this Phoenix? We‘re at 80 at 11 pm, so you have us beat! Our temperature is weirdly low right now—only 92, 93 instead of 98-100. Maybe it‘s a result of the hurricane! 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
Texreader That‘s brutal! I‘ve definitely experienced those baking nights here in south Texas but it‘s downright cool at 80 here, probably because of the after effects of the hurricane. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @CindyMyLifeIsLit yes , when I was a kid here it could be 104 & go down to the 70s at night. No more , between huge amounts of development & climate change probably never again. 2mo

Amiable My friend who lives in Phoenix is always defensive when I ask why she lives in the desert—she says it‘s not so bad because it‘s a “dry heat.” I say so is the heat that comes out of my oven but I‘m not sticking my body in there! 😖 Although she does have a point —humidity plays a large role in the “misery” index when the temperatures rise. It‘s been in the high 80s/low 90s here in CT, but with humidity levels over 70%. It‘s difficult to breathe. 😫 (edited) 2mo
AmyG I am off to Las Vegas. It‘s 116 today. @Amiable I agree….humidity makes life so much worse. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @Amiable well , that‘s gone too . When I was a kid humidity would be 12% or less . When I posted last night 29% humidity. Used to be our monsoons would come & go fast , along with humidity, no more. 2mo
AnnCrystal Oh boy! 🌡️🙏🥺. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @AmyG be careful & stay hydrated! Vegas has had so many heat records lately. 2mo
readmyeyes It‘s so awful! I feel ya. It‘s 112 in Sacramento today. Stay cool 😎 2mo
dabbe I'm with ya! Some data from the AZ Republic:
√“Phoenix heat experts expect 2024 to break the record for hottest summer in history.“
√“At Sky Harbor Airport, NASA found the pavement to be around 140 degrees.“
√“This year, we‘ve already had 23 days of excessive heat, meaning we will outpace previous records.“
Plus, humidity AND high dew points but ZERO rain, unlike our monsoons of old, which would bring some respite. It's frickin' hell here. 🔥

Hooked_on_books At first I looked at thought, 113 in phoenix in summer? Seems common. But not at night like that! That‘s awful! 2mo
ShelleyBooksie Wow!! That's wild heat. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @readmyeyes Sac can be shocking hot at times, love that town! Summer heat is why I never hit the fair when I lived in NorCal 2mo
Leftcoastzen @dabbe stay near the air & hydrated! As a kid I remember 105/74 much less population & buildings then. + climate change 2mo
dabbe @Leftcoastzen #youtoo 💦💦💦 2mo

Reading this at the same time as Robinson Crusoe really pointed out how introspective Gil is. (And how much more I like him than Robinson 😀) This also feels like a book that will reward multiple readings. It touches on so many topics that could be depressing, but is actually hope-filled. I look forward to my book club‘s discussion on Thursday.

BkClubCare Yay! I liked this one, lots of layers 2mo

Found this at a #bookstore in #Phoenix. Some #taphophile humor! It provided some much needed laughs. 🙃

There were about three thousand active satellites up in the sky, he'd read. Some twenty-thousand pieces of orbital debris. At any given moment, an average of nine thousand passenger planes flying.

And yet, he'd thought as he walked, without the last of the dinosaurs the sky would be empty.

BarbaraBB I loved this book 7mo
