#AlphabetGame @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Letter W

One of my all-time favourites and a pleasure at any age, though perhaps an adult might get more out of it. This novel about a gentlemen's club of small creatures who enjoy pottering about, thinking, and the finer things in life has some interesting subtexts.

jlhammar Oh, I love this one. I should do a reread soon. 1mo

This morning was like Christmas! I‘m so delighted by everything @Chrissyreadit thank you so so very much! These were such thoughtful selections! I love the candle so much I know it‘s going to be my new favorite office accessory and this edition of WitW is going on the special editions shelf ❤️ I‘m so excited to try the recipes! I love pomegranates #recipeswap @BennettBookworm great success 👩‍🍳

Chrissyreadit Yay!!! Those books were all on your TBR (but I noticed you have some books on there twice- so hope you did not have them) and WITW was on your form. I thought this one was so pretty! I loved the candle- sorry it was smudged- (it arrived that way but the inside seemed perfect. ) and I love the smudge sticks from Steadfast Flowers- to me they are works of art. 4mo
StaceGhost @Chrissyreadit absolutely! It‘s so gorgeous! And no I don‘t have any of them! As for the candle it smells amazing! 4mo

Thank you for the #Two4Tuesday tag @TheSpineView !! ❤

1 - It's honestly so hard to decide. I love the crocuses and daffodils because they're first - love the lilacs because they smell AMAZING - I just love watching the garden wake up in the spring!!
2 - I don't know if it's because the story starts with Mole spring cleaning, but there is just something about the tagged book that always gives me those spring vibes!!

TheSpineView The Wind in the Willows is a great choice! Thanks for playing! 6mo

I really enjoyed this breezy little book. My copy has an intro and afterword by Jane Yolen, and she calls it three stories in one: Toad‘s adventure story; the friendship tales of Rat, Mole, and Badger; and the Pan interlude. I liked the friendship best, as I found Toad unlikeable and the interlude odd. My June #DoubleSpin and first goal met for #AnyWayYouReadathon !

Eggbeater Nice job! 👏👏👏 You are making me want to re-read this after all these years. 1y
Ruthiella I agree with the 3 books and I also prefer the friendship of Mole and Ratty. But since it is a kids book, I‘ll bet children generally prefer the parts with naughty Mr. Toad . 1y
ravenlee @Ruthiella she pointed out that kids like Toad‘s antics, while adults tend to prefer the essentially middle-aged trio, and I had to agree. I think this is one of those books that is completely different if you read it as a child and as an adult, like you wouldn‘t even remember some of it as being in the book at all. I hope to share this with kiddo sometime and see what she gets out of it. 1y
See All 7 Comments
batsy Yep, when I read it as a kid it was Toad being absolutely bonkers that stuck with me years later (but Badger is someone I relate to now that I'm older 😆) 1y
TheAromaofBooks I have an edition illustrated by Tasha Tudor and the pictures are just perfect! This one is a bit of a nostalgia read for me as I can remember Dad reading it out loud to us; we were especially entertained whenever he had to say “poop poop“ since that was the sound of Toad's car horn haha 1y
MidnightBookGirl I know I read this as a kid, but I maybe should revisit this one. I am planning a Bunnicula series re-read soon, so maybe I'll just sneak some more childhood favorites in. 1y

I adored this story. It‘s a book i would love to re-read, although this time from an edition which has illustrations as gorgeous as @ju.ca.no ‘s copy. It‘s a simple story but one full of many lessons for children & adults alike. Ratty, Mole, Toad, & Badger live in the countryside & go through many moments of adventures & thrill, constituting lessons for life – friendship, forgiveness, love, helpfulness, appreciation for nature & its bounty. 👇🏽

Tanisha_A A book which should be read aloud to children. 1y

This book was both charming and frustrating. The character of Mr. Toad is an annoying, impulsive blowhard... but thank god he‘s in the story, as otherwise not much of anything would have happened. It was a unique interesting read overall, but there are huge plot holes and issues that make zero sense, especially in relation to Mr. Toad. I could probably talk for a half hour or so about my mixed feelings about this book!😂

The story started off ok but I wasn‘t to fond of some of the concepts found in the book. The friendships seemed more like gaslighting than real friends not to mention the unlawful activities that the book just brushes off. However the writing was beautiful so it does have that going for it.

Languishing on my TBR shelves for years, I was recently reminded of Grahame's book thanks to a Michiko Kakutani tweet quoting it while referring to T***p's ongoing refusal to concede. I was familiar with a few of the basic narratives, but this had quite a bit more going for it & was a pleasant surprise. Linguistically rich, thematically mature & filled with life lessons important for all ages. Can def see this being a future comfort read.

vivastory Bonus point for the Penguin Threads Edition! 2y

*Toad changed into his work pajamas.
He reached under a pillow for his laptop and opened up his email.
“I have so much work to do,” sighed Toad.
He set his Zoom background to a picture of his room when it was tidy.
“There,” said Toad. “Now I am professional.”*
This is one of the most relatable things I've read this week 😂

September 2020 (audiobook)
I really love this book - it is so beautifully written - and I thought the narrator was suitably English. Luke also found the small parts he listened to amusing. It failed, however, to catch the girls‘ attention. I do recall reading it to Polly years ago and she enjoyed it, but I feel audiobooks with simpler language, such as the Laura Ingalls‘ books, work better for Beatrix right now.

Dad read out loud to us a lot, but I particularly remember this one - Mr. Toad getting almost run over by the car & yearning for one of his own - my dad's “Poop, poop!“ will be with me always! 😂

Walkin' on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves - apparently before I could even walk this song was enough to get me bouncing!!

So, so much. Today especially time hanging with my sister/best friend. ❤

A book loved by many. Sadly, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I am already to grown up to enjoy this story. But I constantly kept asking myself “Where and how did they get that bacon from?“ 😏

Also, the animals distance themselves from humans, but keep interacting with them anyways, and all in all also totally act like humans (including playing war).

But I liked the pictures.

This would be a great one to read out loud to kids, but that‘s not all it‘s good for. It‘s also a great pick for adults who need a little bit of a break from lofty literature. And I‘m glad Grahame managed to turn his rotten life circumstances into a wonderful and enduring story that has become such a major source of joy in so many childhoods – good on him!
