Celeste is a local teacher who lets her personal car be seen parked for hours by her student's house, in full daylight, with the license plate uncovered, by all of her student's strolling neighbors. That's Patrick Bateman sloppy and impulsive, not Humbert Humbert neurotically cautious.

I waited too long to reread this. People always compare it to Lolita, but it reminds me more of American Psycho.

Bertha_Mason @catiewithac Me too :) She seemed to write less like this in her later books, and I hope she wasn't bullied to that by all the backlash Tampa got. 3mo

As much as I wanted to put it down, I didn‘t. I really went back and forth with whether or not it was just too detailed considering the pedophilic nature, but ultimately I feel like the details gave me a better understanding of the characters and power dynamic. Absolutely shocking, it made me physically nauseous. The ending was infuriating, but sadly realistic. Nutting is clearly a talented writer and I have to give it to her🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I have officially found the first book I refused to listen to over the car speakers 🤣 I have a hard time reviewing this. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the book that I think get glossed over by the shock of the graphic sex and sexual thoughts involving a minor (seriously, it's pretty much every page). The sex didn't bother me as I think it was necessary to really show the darkness inside Celeste's picture perfect exterior ⬇️⬇️⬇️

FantasyChick Did I think it was a bit much? At times but I really think it shows just how much a person can be consumed by this. A predator is always after their prey. Don't think they can just shut it off, which was highlighter by Celeste herself when she was reasoning why she would never want children. I also appreciate that we really saw her narcissism toward every person and situation she encountered. Everything was about her and her needs. 6mo
FantasyChick The other thing I really appreciated about this book is that is really puts forward the double standard between male sex offenders and female. If this was about a male teacher and his female student it would have had a totally different outcome. The female student is a victim and the teacher is a monster where, in this case, a young, attractive (yes...looks matter more than you think) woman is guilty of giving in to every teenaged boys' fantasy 6mo
FantasyChick It's a slap on the wrist versus a lifetime of condemnation for the villains and a lifetime of humiliation, guilt and judgement versus a round of high fives for the victims. I think this is something that happens way more than we realize and the punishments are too lenient. This was definitely the case of this book and the teacher it was based on. Good on the author for putting it out there. I can't imagine getting into her mindset to write. 6mo
See All 8 Comments
FantasyChick Or maybe I'm looking too much into it and it's really just a dirty book about a dirty teacher 🤷‍♀️ Either way, I couldn't stop listening but it made feel really icky to do it. 6mo
Clwojick I did this one on audio too, and I would NOT use anything other than headphones for this one. 😅🤭🫣 6mo

I go back and forth with marking this as pick or so-so. The reason for that has nothing to do with the content--which is bizarre af--but with the editing oversights.
They changed her car 3 times in the book, once even within the same chapter. I believe she had a white Camaro to start and then she had a red Corvette which then became a red Camaro. Definitely a big difference between a Corvette and a Camaro, especially given the backseat sex scene

Circlejxrk Because corvettes dont have backseats. I'm offended that Litsy silenced me after 451 words. 2y

1. Well my dad is a minister, so Halloween growing up was spent going to whatever church-oriented substitute they were having. Honestly, it was probably more fun and definitely more safe.

2. Tampa by Alissa Nutting changed my perspective on “relationships” between female teachers and male students. Great book, but be prepared for graphic depictions of sexuality and violence.

3. Litsy! I also keep a list in the notes section of my phone.

#3Books that made me uncomfortable

1. American Psycho was rough on my weak stomach 🤢
2. Until I read Flowers In the Attic (I was about 11 years old the first time I did), I didn‘t know you could do THAT with someone you‘re related to 😲
3. In the interest of full disclosure, I had trouble thinking of a 3rd book. I own the tagged book but haven‘t read it yet, and I fully expect to raise my eyebrows, roll my eyes, and drop my jaw when I do. 👇🏻

OriginalCyn620 I mean, the cover itself makes me uncomfortable, so in a way, I think it counts even though I haven‘t actually read it yet! Now when I see button holes, I see tiny vaginas, and that‘s no way to go through life. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y

ElizaMarie American Psycho really affected me. Partially was that the main character reminded me so much of my x (which is definitely not a good thing!!) But yeah. It was very well written but I can't even . Also the movie was way too intense for me (and I love intense) I can't stand Christian Bale (and I think its because this movie!) 2y

Also, I heard someone say that reading this book was like watching a car crash. It‘s horrifying to witness, but you just can‘t look away. I can relate. But it was DEFINITELY not for the faint of heart. It was crude, and unapologetic. Just a warning. I certainly wouldn‘t “recommend” this to anyone.

I read this a while ago, but needed time to gather my thoughts about it. This book was profoundly disturbing in the way it takes you inside the mind of an unapologetic pedophile. Celeste was such an amoral, self-centered character, almost sociopathic, that it was hard to like anything about her. The writing was good, but the premise and the sex scenes....ewww. So-so rating because I‘m not sure I want to recommend to anyone, not due to low quality.

Mehso-so

So I couldn‘t put it down...and the whole time my face was in permanent cringe mode. It was like clicking on a disturbing article and not being able to stop reading because you had to see how far it went; hoping the sociopathic main character gets caught and justice served. And not only did I hate her because she was doing terrible things, she was in general a terrible person with an ugly personality. If dark and twisted is your thing, pick.

MotionChickness I give it a so-so because I thought the writing could‘ve been improved. There were just a lot of weird details thrown in that I didn‘t think were necessary. And again, I‘m battling with my mentality on it. Is it okay to say you liked the book when the subject matter is incredibly messed up? How do you explain why you liked the book... (edited) 3y

Reading has been nearly halted this last month due to life. My excuse, always, huh? Lol

In attempt to read something other than Percy Jackson this summer, I picked up this disturbing book....

I‘m 14 pages in and am already thoroughly shook. I could not imagine the mindset Nutting had to get into to create this.

This will be a mentally challenging one to get through...

Reviewsbylola I want to give this another try. I tried it as an ebook and didn‘t like it. I bailed. But I suck at fiction in digital form for some reason. I‘ve heard such great things about this one. Not sure if you‘ve read this book, but it‘s similar as far as the plot and absolutely amazing! 3y
MotionChickness While I usually don‘t care what people think of me or my choice of reading, I‘m thankful this one is on my kindle. I don‘t want someone to see the cover, be startled by the unmistakable vagina, look up the book/plot, and then decide what they want about why I‘m reading it lol. It‘s a touchy subject. Thanks for the book rec! If I can make it through this one I‘ll look into that one 😊 (edited) 3y

Just finished this super icky book. However, I am probably one of the few that liked it. If you followed the Debra LaFavre story, you will remember that she was a teacher in Tampa that was super pretty but she had sec with one of her middle schoolers. I‘m sure this book is based on her. The thing I remember most about that time is that the media kept talking about how pretty she is and that “of course boys would want to have sec with her” 👇

Kappadeemom As you read this book though, you see how much of a pedophile she really is because we are allowed inside her brain. This is where the magic happens in this book for me. We are so conditioned to think that a woman having sex with a young man is much different than a man having sex with a young boy or girl. This book shows us that it‘s all wrong and the kids are nothing but victims. 4y
gradcat I remember that like it was yesterday...pretty lurid, right? 4y
Kappadeemom @gradcat yes! And her “doe-eyed” innocence when she was in the court. I wonder what ever happened to her? 4y

zsuzsanna_reads Sounds intriguing! Have you read 4y
Kappadeemom @zsuzsanna_reads no, but I don‘t think I can read anything similar for a long time. I feel like I need a shower {shudder} 4y
zsuzsanna_reads @Kappadeemom that one was more psychologically complex than icky. It didn't condone the teacher's actions, but it didn't make me feel grossed out. Also, the main focus was the relationship between a psychologically controlling friend/ colleague and the offending teacher. 4y
gradcat @Kappadeemom @zsuzsanna_reads Plus, isn‘t “Notes on a Scandal” fiction? It was such a great movie, too, with Judi Dench & Cate Blanchett! I don‘t know what happened with that real-life teacher, except her husband did finally divorce her...he hung in for a bit, though...I remember being quite surprised by that. (edited) 4y
Kappadeemom @gradcat TAMPA is also fiction but it sounds very familiar with the real life story being very similar. 4y
gradcat @Kappadeemom Oh, really? I just assumed it was a book about the real thing...oops, my bad! It sounds very familiar to me, too.... 4y

⭐️⭐️ I didn‘t exactly want this cringeworthy story to be longer, but I would have preferred a more in-depth character study and less shocking, gratuitous sex. This could‘ve been really intriguing but instead it‘s borderline fetish porn. There‘s no real backstory which I‘m sure is intentional, but something‘s lacking. I can‘t quite put my finger on it, but I‘m sure Mrs. Price could ... if it was attached to a 14 year old boy.

Skeebies05 I wanted to be able to finish this book and I just could not. I‘ve tried twice. The sex was waaaaay too much. 🙈🙈 4y

britt_brooke @Booknerd222 Exactly my thought! 🙈 4y
sammisho I don't think that is the kind of bra you expect to wear for long... 4y
Booknerd222 There‘s a kink for everything 🤷‍♀️ 4y
WeeziesBooks I had to google this and it looks like someone‘s toddler cut the cup out the bra 😂😂 what a waste of money 4y
TheFunkyBookworm @sammisho 😂😂😂 4y
britt_brooke @sammisho 😆 Agree! 4y
kellyreads 😂😂 4y
Ashley_Nicoletto I had to google it and I think @sammisho nailed it. 🤣🤣🤣 I always thought the whole point of bras was to keep nipples in. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick See also: the Frederick's of Hollywood catalog. I'm pretty sure this is the story of thing you put on with the intention of someone else taking it off. 4y
Texreader Made me think of nursing bras. Ugh. 4y
Ostaff1 @Texreader same! 😂 4y
britt_brooke @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Oh yes (except this sociopathic teacher is wearing one to school underneath her clothes 🙈). Hadn‘t thought about Frederick‘s since the one in my hometown mall closed several years ago. Always felt naughty just walking past it. 😆 4y
britt_brooke @Ashley_Nicoletto Exactly! 😆 Boost ‘em up and conceal the nips. 4y
batsy I had no idea! Now I'm having an existential crisis about the point of bras 😂 4y
Flaneurette Ugh if I googled that a huge ad featuring these things would be on our computer the next time my husband used it and he would think there would be extra spicy Xmas gifts coming his way 😂 4y
britt_brooke @Flaneurette 😆😆😆 4y
BookwormM You have obviously never walked past an Ann Summers shop 🤣🤣🤣 4y
britt_brooke @BookwormM Nope! Had to google that, too. 😆 4y
GripLitGrl 😂🤣😂🤣 4y
minkyb See what happens when I don‘t check Litsy on a regular basis? Open nipple bra? Is that an oxymoron? Google, here I come! 4y
britt_brooke @minkyb 😆😆😆 4y

I knew what I was in for - I looked forward to it. A female sexual predator who targets teen boys? Sounds complicated, intriguing, discomfiting.
Nope - just boring. I gave it 25%, and got nothing for it.
I don‘t hate Celeste - I don‘t feel any sympathy - I‘m not interested in why she‘s obsessed with 14 year olds - and I don‘t care if she gets one.
So I‘m out.
@Jenn1 good news - I found a book worse than Maestra 😜

I'm speechless. Genuinely flummoxed and not at all sure how to review this controversial book without sounding like a crazy person. Believe me, I can understand why someone would read this and be completely repulsed and horrified. It's a detailed, sexually graphic look inside the mind of a sociopathic pedophile and her proclivity for teenage boys after all. And yet, though I was disturbed, I also thought it was kind of fantastic. Don't judge me 🙈

sprainedbrain Great review... I felt the exact same way. Loved this f*cked up book, so no judgement here. 4y
AWahle It's sound like you read with an open mind and a desire for understanding. It can be hard to push yourself to read the uncomfortable. 4y
Daisey Really like this review! I don't know whether I'll ever try this book, but reviews like this make me consider it. (edited) 4y

JenReadsAlot Great review - but going to lie it sounds interesting. 4y
TheLudicReader Tackled similar themes...difficult, controversial but compelling nonetheless 4y
Ashley_Nicoletto I‘m curios about this one! I‘ll have to pick it up. 4y
Cinfhen Agreed!!! I‘m sorry but I REALLY couldn‘t put this book down. It was so good and dare I say entertaining 🤓 4y
MicheleinPhilly I have had this book for years but have always been ambivalent about reading it because of the ick factor. I really do need to just bite the bullet. 4y
swishandflick @TheLudicReader Thanks for the rec! 4y
Kempii I read this book after seeing your review and felt the same way about it. Yikes! What a book. I did enjoy it, and that feels weird. Thanks for posting your review. 4y

It‘s an extremely talented author that can make you feel anything but revulsion towards a sociopathic pedophile.

Celeste is woman that can‘t get enough 14-year-old boy. Really. She brings a new meaning to Hot for Teacher. This book has way more graphic sex than 50 Shades.

But it is such an interesting character study. Celeste is single-minded in her desires but still a complex character. 5⭐️

PS The audiobook is even better! #MonthofRereads

Samplergal I loved this book! So well written. So ick. 4y
Megabooks @Samplergal Exactly! Totally agree. 4y
britt_brooke I‘m not so sure about this story, but I usually love a good character study .... so I‘m taking your word for it and stacking. 😉 I just borrowed it from the library and will hopefully start it in a few days. 4y

DivineDiana Not sure if I could handle this! 😬 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke Good luck! I won‘t judge if you bail. 👍🏻 4y
Megabooks @DivineDiana It‘s definitely not for everyone! 4y
Ruthiella Oof. Thanks for the heads up. I really dislike graphic scenes in books. 4y

So y‘all, I‘m alone on thanksgiving, so what better thing to do than listen to a dirty audiobook at the dinner table! 🤣🤣

Pictured is my meal. The gluten free chicken nuggets are because I had a lot of trouble with the turkey when we celebrated Tuesday. I feel like I‘m 3 years old!

Ericalambbrown Outstanding! Some of my fave holidays were spent on my own. I kinda love it. Enjoy the book! 😉 4y
Bookcation74 Happy Thanksgiving! 4y
Megabooks @Ericalambbrown Thanks! I actually am enjoying it - the holiday and the book! 😁😁 4y

Kaye Nothing wrong with some peace and quiet. 4y
Megabooks @Bookcation74 Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! I hope you‘re doing okay 😊🦃! 4y
Megabooks @Kaye Definitely not! Unfortunately nobody told Henry, my dog, that quiet was good. He barked at cats roaming the yard all day! 🤣🐩 4y
Kaye I haven‘t had a pet since I was a kid but if I were single, I‘d get one for sure. I bet they‘re such good company. I‘d need somebody around with EARS to talk to. 4y
Megabooks @Kaye I briefly had a parakeet as a kid, but my whole adult life, I‘ve had a dog. And if you talk to them, they get really smart! That‘s the best part of having a canine as your main buddy. And the snuggles 🤗🐩 4y
Kaye I‘d have to have someone give me instructions about how to teach them things. I‘ve never owned a dog. I don‘t know how to potty train them , how often or what to feed them, what they like to drink ( do dogs like milk or just water ), how to train them to stay on a string when you walk them so they don‘t get in the road and get hurt, how to teach them to catch a stick and roll over and shake hands . I‘d want to teach a dog all those things. 🐕 4y
Megabooks @Kaye Well, I‘m a veterinarian, and I‘d be glad to give you advice if you decide to get a dog. My email is booksandcooks.litsy@gmail.com They can be a handful at times, but all my dogs have brought joy to my life! 🤗💕🤗 4y
Tamra Ahhhhh peace and nobody to clean up after but yourself! 👌🏾😁 4y
Kaye Well isn‘t that a strange coincidence ? We are senior citizens. Family all gone , moved away, and my husband works 12 hour days. We‘ve talked a lot lately about getting either a cat or dog. There seem to be advantages to both. I don‘t think we could take on a pup or kitten, so would probably need one that‘s a bit older ( like us). We can‘t decide which would be best for us. 4y
Megabooks @Tamra Yes, that‘s been wonderful! So much easier 😊 4y
Megabooks @Kaye Cats are generally physically less demanding in that they don‘t have to be walked. But they also are generally more likely to want to snuggle on their schedule 😉 and may or may not play. With dogs, they need 3-4 walks a day, but with an older dog they don‘t necessarily have to be long. With an adult dog, make sure the dog is already housebroken. Dogs are more likely to play than cats, and more likely to snuggle on your schedule. 4y
Megabooks @Kaye It is easier to take care of a cat if you travel frequently because of the litter box. A friend can come and put out fresh food and water and stay for a bit every day or every other even. Dogs would need to go to a kennel or have someone come multiple times a day. That can get expensive! 4y
CouronneDhiver Try to enjoy it... peace and quiet is underrated 4y
Megabooks @CouronneDhiver Oh, isn‘t that the truth! 4y
Judybskt 🍁🧡🥧🦃💛 4y
Megabooks @Judybskt I hope you had a great thanksgiving! ❤️❤️ 4y
QuietlyLaura Your meal looks great! I'd take chicken nuggets over turkey every time! 4y
Megabooks @QuietlyLaura Thanks! It was great. I love those chicken nuggets - they‘re was better than restaurant ones. 4y
Dragon 🧡 4y
Kaye Thank you for the information. Several people on our street have dogs and they do seem like lots of extra time. They seem like they‘d be more entertaining , but lots more effort. I‘m leaning more towards a cat. I do take walks daily but not multiple times a day. A cat might be the best fit for us. I‘ll think about it. I know it takes lots of commitment so want to make sure we want one and would give him the care deserved. Thanks for your help. 4y
Megabooks @Dragon Thank you 💜 4y
