#BeautifulWords Day 8: A lot of #Serendipity scenes in this tome of a graphic novel that I am hoping to finish tonight. Cross fingers. Paired with grilled lamb chops from our favourite Turkish restaurant.

WOW. I read Blankets by Craig Thompson a couple of weeks ago and it was SO different. Both so beautiful but in such different ways.

This marks book 330 for the year and my last book of 2019! Hoping to do some reading today, but probably won‘t finish any more books. This book was beyond beautiful in both story and art. I can‘t recommend it highly enough and I‘m so glad that I finally own a copy! #wintergames #impulseread #teamfozziwig

I loved this graphic novel. They way in which the artist seemlessly transitioned through time while telling the story of a girl growing into a woman in a sexually oppressive climate is stunning. Thompson delicately braids in Islamic rhetoric and Arabic fables and tales in order to contrast the reality the characters face. The novel also show cases how the culture has developed and morphed over the centuries. Very insightful + beautifully executed.

I don't read enough books about people who live in the Middle East, but this graphic novel has definitely inspired me to check out more that fall into this category. This story of two slave children is absolutely heartbreaking, but their determination to survive and save each other is inspiring. It was also interesting to learn more about the Quran, which this book references frequently. And the artwork is gorgeous.

The artwork is amazing. The illustrations alone deserve 5 stars.

It‘s a beautiful story hidden within brutality and tragedy. It explores heavy issues. It was uncomfortable at times. It made me think. It made me wonder...so a good book.

There was a lot of religious play and exploration. This was my favorite part of the novel. I enjoyed the author's perspective of the stories found within the two religions.

I really love the illustrations in "Habibi" by Craig Thompson. I can't choose 1 and then I saw a picture in pinterest that really sums up the book so credits to the owner.

3/3.5🌟🌟🌟.💫This is honestly somewhere between a pick & so-so for me😐.The parts that were amazing were exceptional & extremely well executed whilst others were tough “topic” wise etc. Which wasn‘t necessarily the issue for me so much as what I felt to be the derogatory way he portrayed the Moors primarily her Harem protectors😑. It didn‘t sit well w/me honestly. The story itself was decent, but everything else saved it for me truth be told.

So good! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All I can say is this book is one of the greatest love story I ever read. Love you thought was impossible. its love between different races. Its also love between two religions. I'm Catholic but I'm enamored with Muslim culture after reading this book. Their stories and writings are so rich. After this one I would love to learn how to read and write Arabic. Its a language so beautiful and so well-thought off. Everybody must read "Habibi".

This is @raguilaru and I's second pick to read together this year.

Beautiful art and some interesting re-telling of stories from the Koran and musings about Arabic script don't make up for the fact that the bulk of this book, the "love story," relies consistently on lazy Orientalist tropes and sexual violence as ways to further the plot and incessantly sexualizes women's bodies without giving them agency. Boo racism and sexism.

Very excited about this big late dinner I'm about to eat, not so excited to keep reading Habibi, which I'm finding, uh, both racist and sexist. Reading for a class, otherwise I would have DNFed it long ago.

#bookriot #riotgrams for today is something #pretty ... That seems a bit of an understatement for the art in Habibi, which is lush and gorgeous.

This did not bowl me over, as I had expected it to do. The art work is beautiful and intricate and I loved the interplay between religious philosophy and belief and the story of Dodola and Zam. But something felt off to me. The story and setting seems too cherry-picked from the culture in order to suit the story.

But like I said, it's a beautiful book. (The picture is of a page from the short section about Geber's alchemical philosophy)

You know you are a book nerd when you are super excited about your new duster and getting your books clean and organized.

This was not an easy graphic novel to read. There was violence, misogyny, racism and crimes against children. The scope of the story was huge and woven with mysticism, numerology, and stories from Jewish/Christian/Islamic tradition. The art was amazing. The plot followed the paths of two orphans in a world that blended a modern metropolis with ancient Arabia.

The art is gorgeous but the subject matter is very tough. I keep taking breaks from reading.

I don't usually read comics but this one I really like. The story is written for adults and is somehow poetic, religious and historic at the same time. The cover is so beautiful!

Over 650 beautifully illustrated pages tell a painful but beautiful story of love and loss.

This is a beautiful story, with stunning images, calligraphy, and design. I never imagined a story like this to be told in this format and so overwhelmed at how Thompson did it. I'm not sure if I would recommend this as a first graphic novel, because it's heavy, in story and pages. Or maybe that is reason enough to start with this one.

Craig Thompson is absolutely brilliant. I am pretty sure I will read anything he writes.

Habibi = My Love. Craig Thompson is so amazing can't wait to delve into this one.

Absolutely blown away by how beautiful the illustrations are, including those arabesque designs and calligraphy that seem to be done by hand. The narrative is addictive and heartbreaking when confronted with the reality of today's world. Halfway mark but can't seem to pull myself away.

Hurray for good friends and pre-weekend book mail! I arrived home with a lovely little care package waiting at my doorstep. I wonder how they managed to pass our insightful censors? Let's just hope no one wants to peek into my little subversive library!
