The #ToB crew is hosting a horror pop-up in which 16 classic horror novels will be set up against one another in the usual way.

https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/welcome-to-the-horror-popup

I don‘t think I‘ll participate (too many books too little time) but I do love that tob is alive and kicking and can‘t wait for them to follow up with the #ToB26 longlist!

Ruthiella I did see this and thought it was pretty cool that it is all older titles-classics even! I probably won‘t participate either but I‘ll try to check out the commentary! 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh that sounds fun!! 2d
Suet624 I thought of you immediately when I saw their notice about this event. I appreciate their efforts. I‘m not someone who tends to like horror stories so I probably won‘t participate, but I‘m happy they‘re trying. 2d

I‘ve been having a bit of a reading slump. I‘ve been going through my TBR shelf and visiting the library and have bailed on so many books I haven‘t bothered to record them. Yesterday I found this with the note I had written to myself. 😊. So I‘m reading it again. So far no memory. 🤷🏻‍♂️ . At least I don‘t think I‘ll be bailing. Just going to see if I can find when I did read it.

BarbaraBB I loved this so much. You‘ll probably remember when the second part starts 2d
CarolynM I might need to put notes like that on my books soon 😆 It‘s funny how some stay with you while others, even though you remember you loved them, just drift away… 2d

I put this book as aSo-So for various reasons: somewhat dated; plot very convoluted; too many “bad “people especially men, after the protagonist for various reasons.Annie, the protagonist is very likable, and there were definitely witty moments, but all in all it was just OK. #AnArtLoversMystery #TBR #StoryGraph #2025OffMyShelfReadingChallenge #bookpublishedover10yearsago

Eh, it was OK.
Mostly positive mindset stuff, and none of it in any particular depth. It's like a big plate of aperitifs to pick and choose from, but with nothing substantial enough to really get your teeth into.
Also, I don't care what her woke credentials are, blithely asking (rhetorically, I presume) "Can you afford NOT to do therapy?" is financially obtuse at best and, arguably, ableist.
Two valuable things I took away from it ?

quietlycuriouskate These are common obstacles not personal failings. Also, the idea that we are not responsible for our first thought, but we are responsible for our second thought and our first action. 4d

I love Patrick Gale, I loved this. He can take a terribly sad story, which in his hands is then told very gently and is incredibly readable. The clue here is in the title; each chapter starts with a description of a painting in an exhibition of artist Rachel Kelly‘s work. Slowly going back and forth through time the story untangles and pieces together Rachel‘s life, and that of her four children. Beautiful. Prepare to cry.

TrishB I love this book ♥️ 4d
