The City Baker's Guide to Country Living
The City Baker's Guide to Country Living | Louise Miller
A warm, full-hearted novel about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home, and that sometimes the best things are found when you didn't even know you were looking When Olivia Rawlings--baker extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club--sets not just her flambed dessert but the entire building alight, she takes a much-needed weekend break in the idyllic leafy town of Guthrie, Vermont. A weekend soon turns into something more permanent when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous, sweater-set-wearing owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, needs to recruit a new baker who can help her reclaim the inn's blue ribbon status at the annual county fair apple pie contest. On paper, at least, Livvy seems to be just who she was looking for. Livvy's love life's a mess and so she does what she does best: relocate. Along with Salty, her gigantic, uberenthusuastic dog with almost too much personality, Livvy, as the Sugar Maple's new baker, brings her mouthwatering desserts to the residents of Guthrie, home of Bag Balm, the country's longest-running contra dance, and her best friend, Hannah. And when Olivia meets Martin McCracken, the Guthrie native who has returned from New York to nurse his ailing father, Livvy comes to understand that she may not be as alone in this world as she once thought. With the joys of a warm, fragrant kitchen, the sound of banjos and fiddles being tuned in a barn, and the crisp scent of the orchard just outside the front door, Olivia Rawlings may finally find that the life you want may not be the one you expected--it could be even better.

Finished this one a couple of weeks ago but it took me time to make a dish to go with it for my virtual foodie book club. I enjoyed this starting over story of a baker who leaves the city for a small town/community in Vermont. I paired it with this simple potato & spinach soup, not because it was in the book but because it‘s what I‘d want if I were staying in a repurposed sugaring shack in the fall & winter in rural Vermont.🤷🏻‍♀️⬇️

This started out a bit slowly for me but that gave me time to really fall for the complicated characters. I loved all the food talk and it brought back memories to when I worked in professional kitchens. This was my November #bookspin pick. I was surprised by how much I did not like this book. Maybe I was in the wrong mood for it. But I was looking forward to a cozy, fluffy romance and this was not that. I hated almost all the characters' personalities and was frustrated by their stupid decisions. I like small town settings where everyone helps each other and there's a strong sense of community. ⬇️

peanutnine But in this small town, everyone just seemed to talk about each other behind their backs and cause problems. I kept reading hoping it would get better. But by the end everything was magically wrapped up too sweetly and I was not impressed. @TheAromaofBooks 2y
TheAromaofBooks I got this one from BookOutlet on the cheap because I thought it was a Christmasy book (from the cover)... but when I was gathering books for #WinterGames, the synopsis seems like this isn't Christmasy at all?? I also really dislike it when covers/blurbs look like fun fluff, but the actual story isn't. Such a disservice to the book, because I'm always going to be mad when it's not what it looks like! 2y
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yes exactly! It's nothing like Gilmore Girls as it is blurbed on the cover. I also thought it would be more Christmas-y but it really takes place over the course of a year and Christmas kinda gets skipped over 😑 2y
TheAromaofBooks I'm in the middle of writing a review for a Christmas book I read this week and it made me realize that the cover for it is almost exactly the same as this one! 2y
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks wow it is very similar! 2y

For the most part, I liked this one. I seem to find myself drawn to stories about chefs/bakers who begrudgingly end up in the country but gradually realize that rural life is what they had needed all along. 😁😁 That said- Livvy‘s self sabotaging ways got a bit tiresome. But overall I did enjoy the story.

4⭐️

A story about how a baked Alaska went bad and turned into an opportunity to escape the big city for a last minute pastry chef position at a small little inn. Olivia works through her emotions as she bakes and allows it to take over her life. The importance of family and tradition is emphasized throughout and I can definitely see myself reading this again because of it.

I loved this story... It was written with warmth and heart, not to mention all the amazing desserts and a tender love story.
What a beautiful setting in Vermont for love to blossom, making new friendships, family life and lots of music reminiscent of my younger years.
It made me feel cosy imagining Thanksgiving and Christmas in Vermont and all its beauty.

I love the authors writing style and fell in love with all of the characters... except one.

This book is like a warm blueberry muffin with a fresh cup of coffee. It‘s comforting in every sense of the word. If you like books about chefs, food, fresh starts, a city mouse trying to be a country mouse and you want to fall in love with Vermont - this is for you. Good palette cleanser. Sweet and satisfying - it‘s more Gilmore Girls than Hallmark Movie.

It‘s good you caught it relatively early. I‘m just now realizing it in my 40‘s! My therapist still doesn‘t understand 🙄 - but I‘m changing therapists- shhh!! Lol, I wish her the best!! 6y
Mimi28 Stormy is quite the hunter. When she is after a mouse it‘s the only time I hear her growl. One time by the time we caught up with her we just saw the mouse‘s tail hanging out of her mouth! With Christmas right around the corner, the morning was filled with festive errands and then a much needed stop for hot chocolate to warm up. I especially love this spot, for the view outside the cafe‘s window. Positioned at the mouth of a canyon, it‘s been a visual treat, watching the fog creeping down the mountainside. There was even a magical moment when I looked up from my book and snow was gently falling in fat flakes.

I woke up to this. And it's still snowing. Vermont's version of April Fools, I guess. I picked this book up after seeing the story was based in Vermont. A baker leaves a job in Boston to work at a country inn. It was light and fluffy like the pie crust she kept writing about. It was just what I needed. And the love interest was my kind of guy so that helped too. #Vermont

This was an enjoyable read albeit not very original. Excellent food descriptions & I would love to go to that Harvest dinner. Miller writes well although she does have a tendency to drop a lot of names of characters which does lead to some confusion. And there were undeveloped points. But, I went with the flow and it really didn't matter. I wish there were more recipes at the end of the book. I especially wished she posted the macaroon recipe.

Audrey @LouiseMiller thanks! I met you at the Cambridge Public Library at the pie contest. I had the cheddar cheese one. 7y

I wanted a simple, sweet story about finding fulfillment in a charming small town. I got that... but I also got a book that feels strangely regressive. The fulfillment our protagonist finds comes in a disappointing way...for me anyway.

It's only an okay book.
