Since their mother's death, Tip and Teddy Doyle have been raised by their loving, possessive, and ambitious father. As the former mayor of Boston, Bernard Doyle wants to see his sons in politics, a dream the boys have never shared. But when an argument in a blinding New England snowstorm inadvertently causes an accident that involves a stranger and her child, all Bernard Doyle cares about is his ability to keep his childrenall his childrensafe. Set over a period of twenty-four hours, Run takes us from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard to a home for retired Catholic priests in downtown Boston. It shows us how worlds of privilege and poverty can coexist only blocks apart from each other, and how family can include people you've never even met. As in her bestselling novel Bel Canto, Ann Patchett illustrates the humanity that connects disparate lives, weaving several stories into one surprising and endlessly moving narrative. Suspenseful and stunningly executed, Run is ultimately a novel about secrets, duty, responsibility, and the lengths we will go to protect our children.

I liked this book a lot but it was confusing at some points. I had to reread a few parts to understand fully how everything connected but it still kept me hooked until the end! 🌟🌟🌟

This has been on my TBR list for awhile. After all, when you are constantly training for the next race, you should read a book called Run... right?

Patchett is one of my favorite authors and I will eventually read all of her books, so Run was always on my list. It wasn‘t my favorite of hers and would almost rate it so-so but I love her style and am giving it a pick. An interesting construct but it didn‘t feel as naturally fleshed out as her other books.

susanw She‘s one of my favourites also. 1y
Zelma I feel like I need to read more Patchett. I liked the one I‘ve read so far (The Patron Saint of Liars). 1y
DivineDiana I loved Bel Canto and liked Run! 1y

Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors, but this was not my favorite of her books. As always, the writing is beautiful, but it felt like there was way too much trying to happen in this novel, resulting in almost nothing happening in reality. I wish the characters had been narrowed and the focus had been tightened onto a few key ideas.

My wife has been telling me for months to read Ann Patchett, but other books kept popping up to the top of my stack. It got to the point where it was becoming an issue. So I picked this up and...surprise: she was right. I've read 250 pages the past two days.

My #bathtimebooks are any paperback or non-leather hardback in my library. I don't take my Kindle in the bath. #autumnreads @Tiffy_Reads

TrishB Lovely 👍 2y
Lola Love these shelves. I have so many books that it's usually easy to chose #bathtimebooks but I have been known to put my Kindle in a ziplock if I can't stop reading whatever is on there-and I also bought a waterproof Nook just for the bath. (edited) 2y
Lcsmcat @Lola There's a waterproof ereader? Why did I not know about this? 2y
Lola @Lcsmcat Kobo did it first then Nook followed suit. Most of my ebooks are Kindle so I hope Amazon comes out with one soon. Here is a link for the Nook https://m.barnesandnoble.com/w/nook-glowlight-plus-barnes-noble/1122314015?ean=9... 2y

How is it that this got great reviews, yet, I'm having a hard time investing? I love how her voice supersedes time and place, but I wanted to like this more than I actually do. I'm going to keep on keeping on though. I'm hoping my mind will change soon.

Seemed like a good time to reread this, and I was right. I think I liked it even better this time than I did when I first read it. The institutionalized racism in the book is even more poignant and painful.

Ann Patchett has a way of making you fall in love with her characters, which makes it all the more devastating when there is a sudden, unexpected catastrophe right at the end (but that, in retrospect, you should have seen coming). Beautiful writing in this book as always. I also love the cover and the iridescent blue color on the inside flaps of the hardcover edition.

A story about family and secrets told over the course of a 24 hour period in snowy Boston. I wish it was 500 pages longer. I want to get to know the characters better.

Next up for #readathon is another book that has been on my shelf for years. The blurb on the cover says the book deals with religion, race, class, politics and family. Sounds like it is right up my alley and completely relevant to today's society.

The white Mayor of Boston and his wife adopt two very young African American brothers. The wife dies and the Mayor raises the boys with every advantage. But who was their birth mother? Then, there is the little sister that they never knew they had. Her name is Kenya. Themes of family love and what defines a family.

He did not mean for any of his sons to become ichthyologists. He had meant for them, at least one of them, to be the president of the United States. (I got annoyed by the YA novel. I kinda expected it though.)
