Kaleidoscope Eyes | Jen Bryant

Kaleidoscope Eyes by Jen Bryant is a novel written in verse and a fast and fun read. All that annotation is because I decided I‘m teaching it in my grade 7 class! The sections are headed by quotes from songs popular in the time setting (mostly 1968). Somehow with few words, the author captures some of the essence of the race tensions, the war tensions, and the excitement of a treasure hunt/mystery. Recommended! 4/5 stars 😁

Super cute middle grade story. Told well, good audio performances.
Kids will love it! I would put it above a ‘so-so‘ but under ‘pick‘

The Kidd siblings have grown up diving down to shipwrecks and traveling the world, helping their famous parents recover everything from swords to gold doubloons from the bottom of the ocean. But after their parents disappear on the job, the kids are suddenly thrust into the biggest treasure hunt of their lives.

I read this book in one sitting! Definitely interesting story, but not a ton of depth. Light, fun book to read. I have read a lot of reviews saying the Spanish wasn‘t accurate, but since I don‘t speak Spanish it was fine.

jenreads7 Wow! Way to go! Now your “book set in South America” is ✅. 5y

#OctoberXFiles Day 17: Clear #PeopleAreStrange vibe with 7 oddball siblings named after the day of the week that they were born. As Fats noted in her review: “When disaster struck, and their house exploded, the Problim children were forced to go out of hiding and live in their grandfather‘s house in Lost Cove, a small town along the Carolina coastline.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-iQw

What a disappointment. I read the 2nd book in the series a while back, and it was quite enjoyable, so I was glad to pick up the first book now. I shouldn't have. Nothing much happens in the first half, but you get painfully detailed descriptions of the scenery and minor activities. Then there's a questionable time travel element and a really underwhelming treasure hunt. I wish I had abandoned this book when I first felt it was going nowhere.
