Garden Spells
Garden Spells | Sarah Addison Allen
In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it. The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plantsfrom the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleysexcept for Claires rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claires quiet life is turned upside downalong with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacyif they are ever to feel at home in Bascomor with each other. Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own.

The Waverly women each have a special gift. Their backyard has a garden whose plants have magical side effects. Their yard also has a strange apple tree. Eating an apple from this tree will reveal to the eater the biggest event of their lives- good or bad.
The story was cute and it was a fast read. A perfect beach book.

Love Sarah Addison Allen books for easy, fulfilling reads! This is my favorite so far - magical realism, family secrets, and some character growth. Also enjoyed the southern, small-town setting that distinctly makes these books Addison Allen‘s.

Echhhhh this reading slump. So I think this was a victim of "just not right for me but probably really perfect for someone else." Pros: the writing, the apple tree concept. Cons: the unoriginal story, the Emma "plotline", the fact it was unchallenging and watered down

I needed a pallete cleanser, and this served that purpose. I wasn't enthralled by it--the plot was predictable and not very substantive, the ending wrapped up too fast, and the characters were pretty surface level. Buuuut, it was a nice, quick read that got me out of the intense feels that The Huntress brought on.⭐⭐⭐/5

Delicious herbs; intoxicating flowers; and, a feisty apple tree that throws its fruit at people, tempting them to take a bite and see the biggest event of their life — a few reasons I ❤️ Garden Spells. It‘s also a great treatment for spring fever.

It invited me to read it really slowly which was a nice change of pace. It ended up being just the kind of romance I like - thoughtful and uplifting

In this book, The garden is bursting with magical plants which help the townspeople see their lives more clearly. While I related to the characters especially Claire and found them engaging, I found the plot predictable and a bit overdone. Unlike Harry‘s Trees, the women in the story are capable of actual magic, although more of the variety of an untrained wizard. A good read but not a great one.#bookschool

I‘ve read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen and really enjoyed it. Garden Spells has that same touch of magical realism as the Waverly family of Bascom, North Carolina carry their own magic. After traversing across the country, Sydney returns home with her daughter, Bay, and starts her life again living with her sister Claire.

People have been knocking on the back door of Waverley House looking for something made from the flowers in their garden or trying to climb the fence to filch an apple, for generations. But the last thing you should do is eat an apple from the Waverleys‘ tree!

This one “wandered from the path” a little bit, if you will. 🙃🍎🐍

Playing with the idea of Red Riding Hood & Eve, the symbolism of apples (temptation, sin, & knowledge) & feminism. Also, desperately try to find a way to make “Little Pink Clitoral Hood” empowering & not silly or a little weird/creepy. Wish me luck? 😅🤞🏻

The women of the Waverley family are heirs to an unusual legacy, one that grows in a fenced plot behind their Queen Anne home in Bascom, North Carolina. There, an apple tree bearing fruit of magical properties looms over a garden filled with herbs and edible flowers that possess the power to affect in curious ways anyone who eats them... The Waverly family #charmed me thoroughly with their southern magic. #witchyreads
