The Marches
The Marches: A Borderland Journey between England and Scotland | Rory Stewart
25 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
From the best-selling author of The Places in Between, a flat-out masterpiece (New York Times Book Review), an exploration of the Marchesthe borderland between England and Scotlandand the people, history, and conflicts that have shaped it In The Places in Between Rory Stewart walked through the most dangerous borderlandsin the world. Now he walks along the border he calls homewhere political turmoil and vivid lives have played out for centuries across a magnificent natural landscapeto tell the story of the Marches. In his thousand-mile journey, Stewart sleeps on mountain ridges and housing estates, in hostels and farmhouses. Following the lines of Neolithic standing stones, wading through floods and ruined fields, he walks Hadrians Wall with soldiers who have fought in Afghanistan and visits the Buddhist monks who outnumber Christian monks in the Scottish countryside today. He melds the stories of the people he meets with the regions political and economic history, tracing the creation of Scotland from ancient tribes to the independence referendum. And he discovers another country buried in history, a vanished Middleland: the lost kingdom of Cumbria. With every step, Stewart reveals the force of myths and traditions and the endurance of ties that are woven into the fabric of the land itself. A meditation on deep history, the pull of national identity, and home, The Marches is a transporting work from a powerful and original writer.

March was a bit slow for me (can‘t imagine why, lots of time at home, but too much news time 🙄).

So 7 reads for me: 5 books, 2 comics.

Finished up the end of my ongoing #LOTRChapterADay with the #FellowshipOfTolkien

Caught up with the Discworld reading group #PratchettPosse or #OokBOokClub

And otherwise caught up with an ongoing series that I was behind on, basically good old-fashioned escapism.

3 carrying over into April

#MarchStats

squirrelbrain Love your artwork! Great month...👍 4y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @squirrelbrain @Butterfinger Thank you, it‘s just layered images using an app called Over and text.... plus some green for Saint Patty‘s and Spring. 4y
wordslinger42 Will we be reading Morgoth's Ring soon? 😊 I'd love to join in again for the histories! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I think that‘s the plan, not sure of the start date though. I know @JazzFeathers got her copy, but I don‘t think @Daisey has hers yet. 4y
JazzFeathers I have my copy and l think l'll finish the Appendixes of The Lord of the Rings before the week ends. And l think it's my turn for the schedule 😜 4y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 I have ordered a copy, so it just depends on current shipping times. 4y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers @Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just ordered my copy, but it won't be here until April 24th! If you all have your copies sooner, I can always play catch-up 😊 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I know they are prioritizing necessary shipments from most places...so I‘m not surprised. We‘ll see how @Daisey makes out. And if it‘s ok with @JazzFeathers, I‘m fine waiting until everyone has their copy. (edited) 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @eanderson @BookwormAHN we are planning on carrying on with the histories, so if you don‘t have Morgoth‘s Ring, and want to order it...I just wanted to let you know. 4y
Daisey I ordered from a different source than usual in an attempt to get my copy sooner, but still not sure when that will be. I‘ll let you know when it arrives. I‘m also good with waiting until everyone that‘s interested gets their copy. 4y
BookwormAHN I have my copy. Fortunately I ordered it about a month ago. I'm ready whenever y'all are and I'm fine waiting awhile until we all have copies. 4y
JazzFeathers Me too. No problem waiting for everyone to get their copy, so we can all start together 😊 4y

I was curious if I could spell it more than once. I only went as far as the "L" and could spell it 3 times. Does that mean I have too many books? I ?

My March books. 🤭I‘m quite shocked, my reading has steadily increased since joining Litsy. Instead of 2 books per month... I see here 7 for March ( one Audible) . ( ??? What ??) God bless all you Littens... these are All ( except 1) #blameitonlitsy & I loved them all ( I bail easily enough) So grateful 🙏🏻❤️

Our friend Mike caught this one at the #MarchForOurLives in Lancaster, PA today. We had thousands out marching in our little city. (Wish I could have been there, but I had a class to take that was required for my license.)

Although I do have previous for egregious crawling, I genuinely bought this book before Rory Stewart became my Minister. I don‘t think I have the nerve to ask him to sign it, though. #rorystewart #themarches #ministryofjustice #ministerofstate #books #bookstagram #currentlyreading #crawling

Another day, another prize longlist. This is the Orwell Prize for political writing - there's a book prize & a couple of journalism prizes. I loved Black & British, but there's a bunch of really interesting stuff in here, and I'd only heard of a couple of them. #orwellprize
