White Tears
White Tears: A novel | Hari Kunzru
From one of the most talented fiction writers at work today: two ambitious young musicians are drawn into the dark underworld of blues record collecting, haunted by the ghosts of a repressive past. Two twenty-something New Yorkers. Seth is awkward and shy. Carter is the glamorous heir to one of America's great fortunes. They have one thing in common: an obsession with music. Seth is desperate to reach for the future. Carter is slipping back into the past. When Seth accidentally records an unknown singer in a park, Carter sends it out over the Internet, claiming it's a long lost 1920s blues recording by a musician called Charlie Shaw. When an old collector contacts them to say that their fake record and their fake bluesman are actually real, the two young white men, accompanied by Carter's troubled sister Leonie, spiral down into the heart of the nation's darkness, encountering a suppressed history of greed, envy, revenge, and exploitation. White Tears is a ghost story, a terrifying murder mystery, a timely meditation on race, and a love letter to all the forgotten geniuses of American music. From the Hardcover edition.

“Electricity is not digital. It does not come in discrete packets, but floods the air and flows through conductors and shoots from the hands of mad scientists in silent movies. If it is futuristic at all, it is a past version of the future, temperamental, unstable, half-alive.”

Immediately thought of this powerfully unsettling book about cultural appropriation. Two hipster poseurs exploit the legacy of black music and are obsessed with “authenticity“ (and vinyl). Sidenote: At work I used a record player for the first time last week, despite the fact my bf has one. #putyourrecordson #ayupaugust

This book pulled the rug from underneath me as i was reading and i came away overwhelmed with the turn it took and the consequent theme of the story. At the outset 2 different 20 something students discover an obscure piece of blues music recorded on the streets of ny during a chess game. The search for the singer and old vinyl takes seth into the dark past of US history + the use of law to continue 'slavery' for commercial gain. Brilliant

First book of 2019 and it didn't disappoint. A young man obsessed with collecting rare records is the victim of a horrible crime. His best friend and music collaborator struggles to learn the truth behind a mysterious blues recording and the story takes a wild turn to include racial injustice and Southern music legend with an eerie supernatural element.
Full review will appear on Roots & Reads later this month!

imyril I read this last year and it was so good. I hated everyone in it, but the narrative was an absorbing car crash I couldn‘t put it down. 9mo
kyraleseberg @imyril I agree, didn't like a single character but the way the story spirals out of control and flips from one plot to another was exciting! 9mo

I loved this book. Two music enthusiasts find a lost recording, much to their delight. But all does not go well for these two college friends. Maybe I liked this book so much because I am a Southerner, and blues music is such a part of our lore. But I believe its appeal is broader than this—much of the action takes place in NYC, where the two men live, after all—as it crosses genres, including some mystery, some magic, and some social commentary.

Whew. Made it through. It is a difficult read because of the timeline jumps between two related story lines of different decades but also because of racism, violence, white privilege and cultural appropriation. Take your time with this one. Its uncomfortably well done. Lol ❤❤❤❤❤

Pic from Eastman NH golf course a few days ago, totally failing on reviewing all the books I read this year! Too much fun doing other things! Really enjoyed this totally different book, not sure how to categorize it, though, sort of a mystery, life exploration? Centers around the obsessive collecting of old blues recordings. Nicely written. If you're in the mood for something a little weird, this is it!

Read this last weekend, and it had been a king time since I finished a book over 2 days. This is the story of Carter and Seth who had only on thing in common, music and mainly music from the 20s and 30s. When Seth record a song on the street, that they post as the music by blues guitarist Charlie Shaw things start to escalate. A story about family, friendship and the past. And how you might never escape your family's past.

So I thought the writing of the first quarter of this novel was great, and I was keeping up.. until it went off into some other realm and I wasn‘t. I kind of got lost, and I don‘t really know what happened; has anyone else read this and felt like ‘what even just happened there‘ after every chapter? I just don‘t think this flowed for me. 🤷‍♀️

mrozzz It definitely required me to let go of my usual expectations. 1y
AnneCecilie I just finished this and in one way I understand where you're coming from, we just came to different conclusions. The novel starts to alternate between Seth and Charlie Shaw as story tellers. And you get Charlie's story as well and his connection with the Wallaces. I ended up feeling that the ghost of Charlie Shaw or fate, got even with the Wallaces. 1y

My parents‘ record collection spanned everything from Mozart and Caruso to South Pacific and Yves Montand to Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson. When you‘re a little kid and you hear Crossroads and Hellhound on My Trail, it changes you. Awe and respect on my part, but folie a deux as 2 white obsessives of the blues get more than they bargained for. Supernatural karma payback on thoughtless cultural appropriation, privilege, power, and greed. 1% 👎🏿

There's a lot to digest within these pages...race relations, cultural appropriation, police brutality, freakin' ghosts, etc.
However, I found the second half of the book (and from what I've read, I'm not alone) to be confusing and completely jarring in tone from the first half of the book (which I felt was far superior).
Having said that, there is no doubt that Kunzru is a talented writer...I was just hoping to enjoy the book more than I did.

Still trying to process what I just read. The writing is beautiful with many very quotable sections about race, privilege, class, and the power of music. Today is an interesting day in the #ToB. White Tears is the outsider the most hyped at the moment I think.
I really liked its plot and style and it deserves to get a bit further in the tournament.
I didn‘t read The Idiot yet, but so many people seem to love it and are happy it won the play-in‘s that I am really looking forward to what will happen today.
So far, the judges are not doing the obvious and I like that a lot!

BarbaraBB @AceOnRoam So far all I predicted turns out wrong. But I love it, accompanied by the judges‘ motives! 2y
RidgewayGirl The Idiot is my favorite and the book I voted to come back in the zombie round. Sing, Unburied, Sing is the best book in the tournament, and I loved So Much Blue, The Animators, Exit West and Goodbye Vitamin. So many good books this year! 2y

Whoa.
This is an ambitious undertaking and deft piece of writing. It starts simply, then slowly like the frog in the proverbial boiling water, you find your in a shapeshifting, ghostly novel and unsure whats really going on.

This book absolutely should be discussed with some of the other big-hitting novels of 2017 namely Sing, Unburied, Sing and Lincoln in the Bardo - all with a similar "ghostly'' element to them.

Loved it ? .

BarbaraBB This was such a surprising book. Great review. And the picture 💜 2y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB Thanks yeah I was stunned by it and now after the toppling of my personal favourite in #tob18 I am throwing all my support behind this one 😀 2y

BkClubCare @Redheadrambles - hoping for a zombie resurrection? 2y
Redheadrambles @BkClubCare yeah but I don‘t want to hope too much. I zombied Lincoln for just this eventuality as I hadn‘t read White Tears at that stage 2y
BkClubCare I forgot to vote. Not that I had a clue what I wanted to vote for. I have/had no clear favorite but lots of good reads 2y
