White Tears
White Tears: A novel | Hari Kunzru
From one of the most talented fiction writers at work today: two ambitious young musicians are drawn into the dark underworld of blues record collecting, haunted by the ghosts of a repressive past. Two twenty-something New Yorkers. Seth is awkward and shy. Carter is the glamorous heir to one of America's great fortunes. They have one thing in common: an obsession with music. Seth is desperate to reach for the future. Carter is slipping back into the past. When Seth accidentally records an unknown singer in a park, Carter sends it out over the Internet, claiming it's a long lost 1920s blues recording by a musician called Charlie Shaw. When an old collector contacts them to say that their fake record and their fake bluesman are actually real, the two young white men, accompanied by Carter's troubled sister Leonie, spiral down into the heart of the nation's darkness, encountering a suppressed history of greed, envy, revenge, and exploitation. White Tears is a ghost story, a terrifying murder mystery, a timely meditation on race, and a love letter to all the forgotten geniuses of American music. From the Hardcover edition.

A surprisingly good read considering all the technical music talk. Part mystery novel about who this Charlie Shaw was and what happened with his recording, was it even ever made? Part treatise on race and cultural appropriation. Kunzru does a great job of blending all those elements together to give the feel of a thriller, while shining a light on relevant social issues from the past (that haunt us still), and are no less present today.

I'm much too tired to be writing this review, because I finished the last 150 pages at bedtime even though I knew I had to be up at 6am today.

The creeping sense of menace drifts in gently giving an ominous feel to a book that seems otherwise to be contemporary realistic fiction until it suddenly begins to boil over at about the halfway way point and careens into stark and satisfying horror by the end.

Very Kafkaesque or maybe Murakamiesque! I absolutely loved this book.
From SuperSummary.com:
Set in New York in the present day, it follows two musically inclined hipsters who run into misfortune after developing a song that is mistaken for a lost work by an obscure blues-era musical genius Charlie Shaw. When people begin to stalk and antagonize the two friends, they are involved in an eerie mystery related to Shaw‘s murder.

Congrats @GatheringBooks for 10 years of book blogging excellence! For my list, I chose 10 most anticipated TBR reads (no particular order):
1. Death in Her Hands - Moshfegh
2. Giovanni's Room - Baldwin
3. The Library At Mount Char - Hawkins
4. Gorilla, My Love- Bambara
5. White Tears, Kunzru
6. The Bluest Eye, Morrison

Billypar @readordierachel I plan to read all of Moshfegh's and Oyeyemi's eventually. I've only read one Moshfegh so far (Eileen) but it was enough to believe she'll become a favorite author. And every now and then I need a read like Char- something crazier than the daily news cycle! 2y
Tanisha_A Fab list, again! So manyyyy I want to get to. 2y
Tanisha_A @Billypar I echo what you say about Moshfegh, have read only My Year of Rest and Relaxation, and absolutely loved her writing. 2y

I‘ve been so swept up by this book - completely mesmerised. I was recommended this somewhere along the way by @ReadingEnvy and it‘s been a 5 star read for me. A strange fever dream of a book - that won‘t appeal to everybody. The first half is a deep dive into the music world of two friends - one an acoustic tech who almost lives inside sounds, the other an obsessed collector of old 1920s records. Then it gets weird. Reality becomes blurred and ⬇️

ReadingEnvy So good, so so good! I think I just brought it up again on the Tournament if Books episode too 3y
Centique the past and present overlap. I won‘t say more than that to avoid spoilers - but if you don‘t like being a bit confused or things becoming unreal, it may not be for you. It brings up themes of appropriation and privilege and a history that has become invisible for so many in modern times. Unforgettable and mind altering! 3y

Immediately thought of this powerfully unsettling book about cultural appropriation. Two hipster poseurs exploit the legacy of black music and are obsessed with “authenticity“ (and vinyl). This book pulled the rug from underneath me as i was reading and i came away overwhelmed with the turn it took and the consequent theme of the story. At the outset 2 different 20 something students discover an obscure piece of blues music recorded on the streets of ny during a chess game. The search for the singer and old vinyl takes seth into the dark past of US history + the use of law to continue 'slavery' for commercial gain. Brilliant

First book of 2019 and it didn't disappoint. A young man obsessed with collecting rare records is the victim of a horrible crime. His best friend and music collaborator struggles to learn the truth behind a mysterious blues recording and the story takes a wild turn to include racial injustice and Southern music legend with an eerie supernatural element.
Full review will appear on Roots & Reads later this month!

I loved this book. Two music enthusiasts find a lost recording, much to their delight. But all does not go well for these two college friends. Maybe I liked this book so much because I am a Southerner, and blues music is such a part of our lore. But I believe its appeal is broader than this—much of the action takes place in NYC, where the two men live, after all—as it crosses genres, including some mystery, some magic, and some social commentary.

Pic from Eastman NH golf course a few days ago, totally failing on reviewing all the books I read this year! Too much fun doing other things! Really enjoyed this totally different book, not sure how to categorize it, though, sort of a mystery, life exploration? Centers around the obsessive collecting of old blues recordings. Nicely written. If you're in the mood for something a little weird, this is it!

Read this last weekend, and it had been a king time since I finished a book over 2 days. This is the story of Carter and Seth who had only on thing in common, music and mainly music from the 20s and 30s. When Seth record a song on the street, that they post as the music by blues guitarist Charlie Shaw things start to escalate. A story about family, friendship and the past. And how you might never escape your family's past.

So I thought the writing of the first quarter of this novel was great, and I was keeping up.. until it went off into some other realm and I wasn‘t. I kind of got lost, and I don‘t really know what happened; has anyone else read this and felt like ‘what even just happened there‘ after every chapter? I just don‘t think this flowed for me. 🤷‍♀️

mrozzz It definitely required me to let go of my usual expectations. 4y
AnneCecilie I just finished this and in one way I understand where you're coming from, we just came to different conclusions. The novel starts to alternate between Seth and Charlie Shaw as story tellers. And you get Charlie's story as well and his connection with the Wallaces. I ended up feeling that the ghost of Charlie Shaw or fate, got even with the Wallaces. 4y
