Mehso-so

So I managed to read this entire thing—all 600+ pages. It was fine. I don‘t love fantasy, and this book is full of witches, shape shifters, trolls, etc. You find out some things, there is lots of violence, and it all sort of circles back around to the beginning. Just not my thing. #camptob #tournamentofbooks #fantasy

Pickpick

A little gimmicky, but this novel is the perfect beach, poolside, or airplane read. It‘s fast, easy, and pulls you forward. This is the story (in interview format) of a fake 70s band based in Los Angeles. #camptob #tournamentofbooks

Using #24in48 to catch up on some #TournamentOfBooks reads. That‘s what I love about the #ToB - discovering some gems like this that I would not otherwise have picked up. I‘m at 5 hr 41 min so far.

Warlight: A novel | Michael Ondaatje
Pickpick

Shockingly, this is the first Ondaatje I‘ve ever read. I also recently read Kate Atkinson‘s Transcription, to which many of my friends compared this book with this the winner. I do think in purely literary terms, this book is the “winner,” but I could read thousands of books about spy craft and the British in and just after #WWII, so they‘re both worthwhile for me. In any case, this is beautifully done. Painful, deliberate, gorgeous, complex.

suzisteffen I mean, it‘s complex, about so much loss, about becoming an adult, about not knowing one‘s parents or sibling really, about how children cannot truly protect each other. About *noticing* things, about being an expert on random natural things that perhaps changed the course of the war. And a lot more. 5mo
suzisteffen Didn‘t realize this was part of #ToB2019 until I just started reading The Rooster! Hurray for #TournamentofBooks. 5mo

Pickpick

Nafkote Tamirat's The Parking Lot Attendant is another book that I wish I'd read to pick up all of the details (rereading for clarification is SO much harder on audio). Anyway, I enjoyed The Parking Lot Attendant for its development of character and the insidious way that the unnamed narrator is drawn into a system that is beyond her capacity. ⠀

New note: after reading some reviews on Goodreads, maybe the things I missed just weren't there?

UnabridgedPod @zest_thereader No shame and no comparisons!! I‘d love to know: What did you read? Did you enjoy it? 3mo
zest_thereader @Unabridged The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson. Yeah, it was a good read, many of the twists were unpredictable but I found half of the book kinda slow. 3mo
UnabridgedPod @zest_thereader Oh, I like that one—my husband agrees with your review! Will you read the rest of the trilogy? 3mo
zest_thereader @Unabridged Yup, I have already half of the second book, I have kept it on hold for sometime though 3mo

Almost at 9 hours for the #24B4Monday readathon. This #TournamentOfBooks #ToB2019 selection was a good fit for the #BlackHistoryMonth theme. It‘s a powerful coming-of-age and coming-out story.
