There's a little magic in the air on the day that I get to clean off my porch every year. I swept up the dirt and leaves that accumulated over the winter months and gave everything a good wipe down. pickThis book is one of the most interesting worlds I have ever encountered, but after my 🧠 made sense of the weirdness I was able to thoroughly enjoy it and understand the premise. The number of books in this collection is daunting to say the least, but it is an intriguing beginning and I am thankful I gave it a shot. so-soOh my goodness! I did it! I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish this book while on vacation.
This was my first book in the Discworld series. There was a lot of world building and strange things happening. I admit, I was confused the majority of the time. I enjoyed the wit, the setting, and how it ended. But for the life of me, I can't explain what the story was about. 3⭐️

pickSomeone told me to read the Discworld books but definitely not to start with Book 1. And I read nearly every single one of the other 40ish books and just read this one right now. And in a way I'm glad I didn't read it first because it's not my favorite but I do wish I still had some of the better ones left to read. 😔 I may just need to reread ones I already know are my favs.

pickReread as a part of my Discworld marathon (1 down, 40 to go!). Turns out my first read of this novel was 10 years ago, how symbolic! I enjoyed this reread tremendously. Yes, this book is indeed very chaotic, I forgot how wild a ride it is, but oh, so much fun!

pickA delightful (if rather cynical) tale of wizards, magic, and tourism. Nearly Tolkien-esque levels of worldbuilding, with a snarky writing style that reminded me of Douglas Adams. I enjoyed getting to explore a fantasy world that was really fresh and unexpected. The Luggage may have been my favorite character.

pickWhat a nostalgic read!
It‘s different from the rest of the Discworld series but still enjoyable. The Death isn‘t as benevolent, and the humor is simpler, more surface level, but the seeds of the greatness are already there.
Twoflower is a tourist from another continent, but he reminds me of the casual reader immersed in a fantastic world.
What would the fantastical inhabitants think of us, readers, if the realities were flipped?

Sir Terry Pratchett's initial entry in his unique Discworld series was a completely engrossing reading experience. Read in one sitting, it is great whimsical fantasy & although it might not be as satirical as his other works, there are definitely a few barbs strewn throughout. I have not yet read more Pratchett since I read this several months ago, but it is def a favorite reading experience of the year.

Because self-imposed book buying bans don‘t count when (1) you‘re in a foreign country and (2) you‘re buying an different edition of a fave book that you already own so it‘s not a “new” book per se.
pickAfter poking about in the Discworld a bit with four novels, I decided to start at the beginning and read all 40+ books in order. This is the first one and I loved it. Not as cohesive as later books, but still satisfying to serious fanatics of Pratchett. Fate and Luck play a tense game involving specifically Rincewind, the failed wizard and Twoflowers, the world‘s first tourist. Only Death is disappointed. 💀😂

1) The tagged book which I read towards the beginning of January. I have the next Discworld book, I really should read it soon.
2) 1*=Loathed it. If I DNF'd, books I would DNF. 2*=Disliked. Frequently annoyed. 3*=It was okay.. 4 *=Really liked it & would recommend. 5*= Loved it, might be flaws but they are not glaring. I use half star ratings.
3) I went through a period in hs when I would, but now I always read in silence.

pickI started this just a few hours ago with the intention of reading about 50 pages & I just now finished the entire book, even though I have to be up in a few hours for work. No regrets. It's been awhile since I've read Pratchett. So good!!

bailedI almost never bail on a book but I couldn‘t get through this one. I know a lot of people love the disc world books…but at least this first one was not for me. I‘ve been told they can be read out of order but I have a hard time not starting at the beginning. Any recs on one I might like more?
pickStarting a Discworld re-read with the very first book. It might not be the best, but it's still a lot of fun, brimming with clever ideas, and I have a soft spot for cowardly, failed wizard Rincewind.

pickI know the first few Discworld books don‘t get a lot of love (and they definitely do get better as the series goes on), but I absolutely love this one. Terry Pratchett was an outstanding writer. I‘d forgotten how much I enjoy the many, many misadventures of Rincewind, Twoflower… and the Luggage.
pickMy first foray in this world. I liked some parts more than others. Sometimes it was a bit meh. I unfortunately didn't get any of the jokes, references etc, but I've discovered there's a whole world on the internet where this is discussed forever. I am going to read more books in this series.

pickTerry Pratchett so understands my sense of humor that I can't believe I'm only getting around to reading his Discworld novels now. This would have been just the thing in my younger days to get me over my post-Hitchiker's Guide blues. Good news is, after this one I've still got 40 more to go!

pickMy reading slump seems almost never ending, especially now that I'm back in school working on a degree in Graphic Design. But I finally finished this one, and it was such an enjoyable read. Terry Pratchett doesn't disappoint. It's funny, it's magical, and full of action. Once I make a dent in my TBR pile, I need to start collecting the rest of the Discworld series.
I figure we could all use a dose of adorable after this past week. From December, but still cute. #OokBOokClub

pickTerry Pratchett's riff on the traditional fantasy tropes is just a lot of fun. The world is mind-bending and not always logical, but, that's okay. Too much logic is rather depressing. My one quibble is that I found Rincewind to be so cowardly and smarmy. He annoyed me a lot, but he was more than offset by Twoflower the tourist and his adventuresome spirit. A nice way to finish this god-awful year.
After a day of almost nonstop cooking, I'm thankful for full bellies (mine and my family's), a comfy bed, and a good book. I'm really enjoying this one so far! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here in the States! Happy regular day to everyone else 😁
After such an intense read (previous post), I need something more fun.
pickFinally got there and read my first Terry Pratchett! The story is full of imagination and I laughed out loud several times. If there is a downside is that sometimes is a bit too imaginative,like chaotic imagination,"wait a second, what's happening?" moments(I know, the Little Prince would be ashamed of the adult that I've become?).I love Twoflower and the evolution of Rincewind.I can't wait to continue the series because I see a lot of potential.
I just love this explanation of dragons as a mix between magic and imagination. It starts on the previous page with: "Oh well, you see, the truth of the matter is that dragons never existed as you (and, until I was poisoned some three months ago, I) understand existence. I'm talking about the true dragon, draconis nobilis..."
I bought a new tarot deck. And looking through the cards, I was immediately struck by this one. This one‘s based on the Iroquois story of Hah-nu-nah, the World Turtle.
And it made me think of the Great A'Tuin and want to begin rereading all the Discworld novels. Again. 🥰
After reading Good Omens last year, and already loving Neil Gaiman, I realized I really needed to read some Terry Pratchett. Added to my TBR pile, and can't wait to read it!
