The Colour of Magic | Terry Pratchett
On a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious but inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet...

#ManicMonday is a great way to start my week off without any emotional baggage @JoScho 😉

📖 - “The Colour of Magic” by Terry Pratchett, where one of my favorite characters was an anthropomorphic piece of luggage named... Luggage! 🧳

🎥 - “Die Hard 2”, which had possibly the greatest action scene that takes place on a luggage conveyor belt! ✈️

🎶 - “Faithfully” by Journey, one of my favorite songs about traveling! 🎸

Book #99: I started reading this book because I was looking for something easy to read and I noticed that all of the Terry Pratchett books were pretty cheap for the paperbacks so I picked up all 4 on the list. I was going to start with Mort until I realized that these were books all within a series of books called the Discworld series, and The...

I started with some of the newest #discworld books, so the first has been sitting on my shelf for over a year. I lent it to my partner first, and she loved it so I stuck it back on my reading list. So glad I'm finally giving it a read. Great choice.
Its wild reading such a parody on classic 70-80s fantasy, especially after seeing where the series eventually goes. Fantastic read so far, looking forward to seeing more of Rincewind after finishing.

I wish I was reading to this view, Florence is amazing. I‘m in the middle of Terry Pratchett‘s ‘The Color of Magic‘ though (which is amazing so far). I‘ve read through plane rides and train rides, completely worth it for this view.

Plus the over 15 thousand steps that Erin and I put in exploring Italy today alone.

I have tried to read this twice before, once on paper and once on audio and didn't really get it. Yet, I knew the problem was with me and not the book - I have trouble with the imagination required for the fantasy genre. This time around, I slowed down and was very deliberate in my reading, not moving on until I had a grasp on what I'd already read, and after a while it just clicked and I was away. I'm glad I persevered as it was a lot of fun.

One down, fourty other discworld books to go! The Rincewind books are my least favourite, but I was surprised what a pleasant read this was. Okay, there isn't really any plot, but I found it so interesting to read again how the discworld started out. And there's Luggage, of course. Who doesn't love Luggage.

Liked it overall, but it really shows that this was the first in the long series in Discworld. The book was a bit aimless at times, but I understand that Pratchett needed room to grow, and it was the start of a great saga, even if it was a bit of a rocky one IMO.

I‘m not going to lie, I had a tough time with the beginning of this book as it‘s pretty kooky and I wasn‘t sure if I was going to make it through and keep all of the characters straight. Once I started to just go with the flow of the book however, I began to appreciate its humor and the crazy, unpredictable journey of the wizard Rincewind and the tourist Twoflower through Discworld. I‘ll read more of the series for sure. #litsyatoz2019 C.

This book was interesting and I can see why it is beloved by so many, but it‘s just no my style. I appreciated the writing, but the random dimensional shifts and time travel and sci-fi philosophy just isn‘t my favorite. I am glad I read it, but I don‘t plan on reading any more disc world books. I prefer a more traditional style of story telling, with more of a linear story line and some kick ass female characters.

Terry Prachett's writing is clever and funny, and there were certain turns of phrase that I chuckled at and highlighted, but I also find his work challenging to read in an unpleasant way that makes me feel a little stupid. Sometimes I had to re-read a paragraph 2 or 3 times to even understand what it was trying to say. The further I got into the book, the more I enjoyed it, but ultimately, it was a bit of a frustrating experience.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa His books in this series honestly get better as he goes...and becomes an even better writer along the way. If you decide to try him again, try the first Tiffany Aching book, which is a subset of Discworld that he wrote much later. The first book is 12mo
RachLovesTV @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I heard that (after I'd already read this one, haha). I actually tried Wee Free Men earlier this year and had a really hard time with the first chapter even, so I put it down. 😅🤷‍♀️ Maybe I'll try again one day though. 12mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RachLovesTV And hey, if you tired him twice and didn‘t enjoy it, don‘t be afraid to pass him by. There are plenty of fish in the sea, book-wise, and we all have different things we love. So if you‘ve given him a fair shot, twice, don‘t be afraid to move in to something else. Read something you enjoy. 12mo
RachLovesTV @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good advice for sure! I don't mind trying him again at some point in the future, sometimes you just have to be in the right mood, too. 12mo

This was my second Pratchett book (the first being Good Omens, which I have read and recommended many times). This book is just a sort of introduction to Disc World by way of a series of escapes across the land and water. I thought I‘d have it read in one sitting but it took me a week. I hear that the other books are more fun so I‘m looking forward to them. Book one for #TwoInThree challenge

jmofo I do love when writers who work in jokes intimate feelings of futility. 1y

jmofo @Graywacke the consensus is that they improve. It‘s exciting to think better‘s coming. I had to start somewhere and I plan to attack the series in published order, unless you have a better suggestion. 😬 1y
Graywacke @jmofo no suggestions. I was going to read them in published order too, after having read several, but I got stuck in Wyrd Sisters, (which plays on Macbeth, which I haven‘t read) and stopped there. : / 1y
jmofo @Graywacke hrmm. That is interesting. I think the witches from Macbeth were in turn based on the three fates, who I dig thinking about. Have you read the Incarnation books by Piers Anthony? 1y
Graywacke @jmofo I‘ve heard the name Piers Anthony. But that sums up what I know about him. Fates - hadn‘t thought about that. I mean, of course... Maybe I need to give this book another try. 1y
jmofo @Graywacke honestly, the few incarnation books I have read were a bit disappointing for me but they are interesting reads so I‘ll probably finish the series. I‘m not a completist so that says something. I‘m up for buddyreads, usually, if you feel like picking up the Sisters in a bit. 1y
Graywacke @jmofo I‘m thinking about it...(worried about all my other reading. 😁). When are thinking if reading Sisters? 1y
jmofo @Graywacke it looks like Sisters is the 6th book, so if I‘m amazing November at the soonest. I‘m not generally that amazing, so if you want to read it after November, you call it and I‘ll get there. 1y
Graywacke Phew. I was afraid you were thinking like now. November works. But later also is fine, maybe better. I‘ll join when you‘re about to get started. Just message me. (I‘ve requested some annotated versions of Macbeth from the library. Maybe i‘ll read one and be really prepared. 🙂) 1y
jmofo Hoo dang @Graywacke that is ambitious and super cool. Have you seen the movie Scotland, PA? It‘s a weird take on Macbeth. Let‘s say late November at most earliest. 1y
Moray_Reads They get so much better! 1y
Graywacke @jmofo I haven‘t heard of the movie. Something to check out? 👍 on late November or later. 1y

I‘m starting a Discworld reread in order of publication. This first entry in the series is not the strongest, and wouldn‘t really be worth it except for what comes later. Rincewind has never been my favourite Discworld character, and Pratchett is still working some things out. However, I loved the tourism satire, and I‘m very excited for what‘s to come.

This is just a funny book, full of satire on Fantasy and D & D tropes. A wizard who can't cast spells teams up with an account tourist from a far-awtay land for numerous shenanigans.

It all takes place on Discworld, which is, you guessed it, a world that rotates on a disc hoisted by four elephants riding on the back of a giant sea turtle through space. 🐘 🐘 🐘 🐘🐢 🌟🌟🌟🌟!

scowler1 I read the series in my twenties. Thirty years later and half way round the planet they're still on my shelf, ignored until recently when a friend of my daughter spotted them and asked to borrow one. 1y
