The Colour of Magic | Terry Pratchett
On a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious but inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet...

Bailedbailed

I almost never bail on a book but I couldn‘t get through this one. I know a lot of people love the disc world books…but at least this first one was not for me. I‘ve been told they can be read out of order but I have a hard time not starting at the beginning. Any recs on one I might like more?

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Think of it less like reading them out of order and more like reading books (some of them little series themselves) set within the same universe. I also started with this one and struggled - but I really enjoyed The City Watch books which start with Guards! Guards! I also really enjoyed the miniseries of Going Postal - although I haven‘t yet read the book it‘s based on. 4mo
Blaire @thegirlwiththelibrarybag thank you so much! That‘s really helpful. 4mo
Graywacke I find I‘m unusual in liking this first messy book. I just love the luggage and gawking at how annoying Twoflower is. So that hinders any advice I can give. But they do get better from here because he plots much much better. And he gets a little easier to follow as he dries up his unseen university humor (a play on the Latin intellectual underground of Europe‘s Enlightenment under monarchic censorship era.) 4mo
See All 10 Comments
Blaire @Graywacke thanks! I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into when I started and got about 1/3 of the way through and decided this wasn‘t the one for me. 4mo
Graywacke @Blaire understand. He was of a mindset. You might try a later book. His best were probably published 1990-1995. His mindset doesn‘t change, but he creates several lovable characters. (As opposed to horrible Twoflower and sadly pathetic Rincewind - both of whom I adore ☺️) 4mo
Fr3NcHtOaSt I loved this book. I could not put it down once I started. 4mo
CarolynM @Graywacke I liked this first one too, (it was the first one I read, back when there were only 4 or 5 published) but I agree it‘s far from his best. I object to you calling Twoflower horrible though - I still giggle about him teaching the four horsemen of the apocalypse to play bridge. 4mo
Graywacke @CarolynM oh, Twoflower is wonderfully horrifying. But i had forgotten that! 4mo
BarbaraJean Stopping in late to the party here! I started reading Pratchett with the Tiffany Aching books & definitely recommend that series within Discworld. I absolutely love Tiffany as a character & the growing depth of the books over the series is just fantastic. I haven‘t read many other Discworld books yet, partly because like you, I have a hard time not starting at the beginning! I loved Mort, though—the Death books might be another good entry point. (edited) 3mo
Blaire @BarbaraJean thank you! I‘ve really appreciated everyone‘s comments. Super helpful in knowing how to approach this series in a way that will work for me. 3mo

Starting a Discworld re-read with the very first book. It might not be the best, but it's still a lot of fun, brimming with clever ideas, and I have a soft spot for cowardly, failed wizard Rincewind.

I know the first few Discworld books don‘t get a lot of love (and they definitely do get better as the series goes on), but I absolutely love this one. Terry Pratchett was an outstanding writer. I‘d forgotten how much I enjoy the many, many misadventures of Rincewind, Twoflower… and the Luggage.

My first foray in this world. I liked some parts more than others. Sometimes it was a bit meh. I unfortunately didn't get any of the jokes, references etc, but I've discovered there's a whole world on the internet where this is discussed forever. I am going to read more books in this series.
TBR since November 9th. 2013; 287 pages.

ozma.of.oz Oh I am so jealous of you! You get to experience such a great world for the first time! The early books are a bit hit and miss, but generally they‘ll only get better from here! ❤️ 13mo

"I think I've missed something along the way," he said. "First we were told we were going to be slaves-"

"A base canard!" interrupted Garhartra.

"What's a canard?" said Twoflower.

"I think it's a kind of duck," said Rincewind from the end of a long table.

"What is your name?" he said, as reassuringly as he could manage. She might be frightened, but she did have the wand. If I had a wand like that, he thought, I wouldn't be frightened of anything. So what in Creation can she imagine I could do?

"My name is immaterial," she said.

"That's a pretty name," said Rincewind.

Terry Pratchett so understands my sense of humor that I can't believe I'm only getting around to reading his Discworld novels now. This would have been just the thing in my younger days to get me over my post-Hitchiker's Guide blues. Good news is, after this one I've still got 40 more to go!

My reading slump seems almost never ending, especially now that I'm back in school working on a degree in Graphic Design. But I finally finished this one, and it was such an enjoyable read. Terry Pratchett doesn't disappoint. It's funny, it's magical, and full of action. Once I make a dent in my TBR pile, I need to start collecting the rest of the Discworld series.

Terry Pratchett's riff on the traditional fantasy tropes is just a lot of fun. The world is mind-bending and not always logical, but, that's okay. Too much logic is rather depressing. My one quibble is that I found Rincewind to be so cowardly and smarmy. He annoyed me a lot, but he was more than offset by Twoflower the tourist and his adventuresome spirit. A nice way to finish this god-awful year.

Finally got there and read my first Terry Pratchett! The story is full of imagination and I laughed out loud several times. If there is a downside is that sometimes is a bit too imaginative, like chaotic imagination,"wait a second, what's happening?" moments(I know, the Little Prince would be ashamed of the adult that I've become?).I love Twoflower and the evolution of Rincewind.I can't wait to continue the series because I see a lot of potential.

I just love this explanation of dragons as a mix between magic and imagination. It starts on the previous page with: "Oh well, you see, the truth of the matter is that dragons never existed as you (and, until I was poisoned some three months ago, I) understand existence. I'm talking about the true dragon, draconis nobilis..."

Few things bring me the joy that Discworld does. Smart but light and absurdly funny. Charming satire of everything we are but done in a gentle and loving fashion by a man who never seemed to doubt that humanity was worth fighting for.

Soubhiville @TheNeverendingTBR This series is so much fun! The first few books aren‘t as strong as the rest, so if you‘d like a taste of what they are actually like I‘d suggest one further in- Wyrd Sisters or Reaper Man maybe. Each book stands alone, so I don‘t think it ruins anything to read out of order. Although there is some progression in each storyline (the witches, Death, the Unseen University.) 2y
TheNeverendingTBR @Soubhiville Oh, I never knew that. Thanks for the feedback, I'll need to look into it! 💫 2y
swynn @TheNeverendingTBR @Soubhiville I haven't read the whole series (Yet!) But I've never read a dud among them. I second Soubhi's opinion that they can be read out of order, though there is some benefit to be had from reading some subseries in sequence. Google "reading order Discworld" for more advice than one person can follow. 2y
TheNeverendingTBR @swynn Good idea, that's what I'll do; although I do have The Color of Magic so I might just start with that one first and then maybe just jump to the highest rated one after that. 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description, no reason for wanting to read it. Some are old, some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
Day 3. #tbrpile

TheSpineView An ambitious under taking. It would take my years to post all of mine. 😋 2y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk This is a very fun but light read. Sir Terry took a few books to really make Discworld something special. 2y
RamsFan1963 @TheSpineView Assuming I didn't buy any more books 🤣🤣🤣 and I only do printed books, it would take me I little over a year to finish my TBR shelves, 396 books. 2y
RamsFan1963 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of Pratchett sense of humor. I'm the only person I know who didn't care for Good Omens. 2y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Might be best to leave this one TBR then. It is pretty much all his humor without the thoughtful bits that show up in later books. 2y

♉️ Prompt 13 • Read a book that you thought was ambitious,

From what i read about DiscWorld, A flat world sitting on the backs of four elephants who hurtle through space balanced on a giant turtle 🐢🌌 definitely sounds ambitious. its a large series and i‘m diving into the first book today💕 Terry Pratchett is also a fellow taurus ♉️
#readyoursign

Clwojick I would DEFINITELY say that sounds ambitious 😂😅 3y
AshleyHoss820 I‘m using Pratchett for my Taurus author prompt and I‘m really thinking of finally reading this one! And yeah, I think you nailed the ambitious prompt! 😊 3y
annamatopoetry I gotta say, though, if you don't like this one maybe give another Discworld book a chance at another time? TCoM is very different from the rest of the books, before the tone was really established, and they're not sequential. 3y
reading_rainbow @annamatopoetry i did read something like that when i was researching the books and was tempted to read another but i just had too start at the first. i‘m enjoying this one so far but eager to check out others, i heard the ones with death/grim reaper are really good 3y

I've only read a handful of Discworld books so far but now I know why people don't recommend reading the books in release order. there's some interesting worldbuilding stuff regarding the structure of the Discworld in itself but Pratchett's sense of dry humor and whimsy hasn't fully developed which unfortunately makes this a pretty dry read. I do enjoy the luggage, though.

On the whole, I had much the same reaction to The Colour Of Magic as I did The Hitchhiker‘s Guide To The Galaxy. It was a fun little romp, a great read to take one‘s mind off their troubles, a great moment of escapism with clever parody and satire thrown in to keep it sharp. I‘d recommend you give this one a go if you‘re not normally into fantasy. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-colour-of-magic-terry-pratchett/ #fantasy
