It‘s so hard to truly like a book when you actively loathe the majority of the characters….

It‘s not the writing—that‘s perfectly fine. It‘s the vapid, soul-crushingly boring people doing stupid shit. I legitimately did not care.

While I can see the link to Austen‘s Emma (matchmaking gone horribly wrong, annoyingly dense, self-absorbed main character), this is definitely no retelling.

It had its moments, but this is no keeper.

It‘s labeled as a love story or romance, and it is those things, in sort of the same way Sally Rooney‘s novels are (I love Rooney so this is praise from me).

This is a story about two very human humans, dealing with their own differing degrees of damage, coping with mental health issues, and trying to find meaning and joy in the void of life. So beautifully written. I am sad that I will never get to read it for the first time again.

As someone who doesn‘t naturally gravitate toward mysteries, I‘m happy to say this book was thoroughly entertaining. I loved the setting a lot, the cast of characters are interesting, and the mystery definitely kept me guessing until the end. My only little issue with it was that I couldn‘t make the ending make sense in a realistic way (still don‘t see the motive), but that didn‘t take away from my enjoyment.

Amazing concept for this murder mystery, even if the execution is a little clunky. But if you know me at all, tell me how I could not like this book:

Characters from all of Austen‘s novels are all gathered together at Donwell Abbey for a house party. Gray has aged them all based on when their books were likely set, so they are all different ages and points in their marriages. Wickham is murdered (obvs) & one of them did it, and our junior ⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain detectives are the Darcys‘ teenage son and the Tilneys‘ teenage daughter, which is a good thing because the magistrate is Frank Churchill. 😂

I really missed Henry & Catherine, was still bored senseless by Fanny and Edmund, and wasn‘t a fan of how my precious Wentworth was portrayed. BUT I genuinely didn‘t know who did it until the end, and having all of these beloved characters together and written fairly believably was a real treat. ⬇️

sprainedbrain Obviously a book for Austen fans… if you‘re not super familiar with the characters you might not get much out of this.

I waited to read this until closer to book two, but I probably wouldn‘t have been mad if I had read it earlier. The cliffhanger is not super cliffhangery. 😅

Solid writing, really good world building, great characters, and the romance was on point. Adult fantasy romance that doesn‘t disappoint, and I‘m looking forward to the next book.

This is a beautifully written reimagining of sorts of the classic fairytale The Juniper Tree. It‘s filled with gorgeous prose and magic, but reader be warned: the original was a Grimm tale loaded with child abuse and cannibalism, and this book is clearly labeled as both a dark retelling and a romance. There is body horror, monsters, and sex (some nice, some not). If you are down for that and go in prepared, I bet you‘ll enjoy it. I did!

@CBee is bringing back #ManicMonday! I love this game because I can change my picks almost as often as I change my mind. 😜

📖 Atonement (tagged)

✍️ Austen, of course… but she has competition (Atwood, Atkinson, Adiche)

🎥 Adore (2013) only because I wouldn‘t let myself pick Atonement for this category too.

🎤 Avenged Sevenfold

🎵 Adore You by Harry Styles (this is the hardest category!)

Tagging some friends, but everyone play!

Ok #PemberLittens, the consensus is that we will read A Secret Sisterhood for our September/October book about Jane.

This book has less than 30 chapters and is divided into different sections about each author. It would probably work for chapter a day, or any other kind of buddy read schedule.

Please let me know if you‘d like to host!

suvata I think a section for each author would be easiest. But I will go along with whatever everybody decides. (edited) 1w

There is a lot going on in this book: in the modern-day storyline, LGBTQ+ and women‘s issues, marital problems, family, relationships, parenting neurodiverse children, and more. Running beneath all of that is the historical mystery, almost gothic in nature, of a Tudor-era woman‘s remains found walled up in the manor. Really good writing, well-researched subject matter, and endearing characters. After a slow start, I loved this book.

One more #PemberLittens post!

A comment on the poll asked how the voting works, and since the voting form doesn‘t collect emails, I‘m not sure who to respond to.

As a reminder, every two months we vote for:

1) a book by Austen

2) a retelling of an Austen work OR a book (fiction or non) about Jane Austen and/or her family, and

3) a book by another female author.

Each time we vote, we alternate between the two options for number 2 above. ⬇️

sprainedbrain So, whoever was looking for the tagged book (Heartstone) on the voting list this time: since it‘s a retelling of P&P, it‘s on the voting list for retellings. It was on the vote list last time and will be on again next time, but this time we were picking a book about Jane. You are welcome to start a readalong of the book whenever you‘d like of course, regardless of voting! 2w
sprainedbrain Also as a reminder, anyone can add books to any of the lists we vote from… just email me or add them as ‘other‘ books when we vote next time. And anyone can email me any questions, concerns, and suggestions anytime: jenni.d.langford@gmail.com. Thanks to all of you for keeping this group alive and fun! ❤️ 2w

CrowCAH It was me @sprainedbrain . 🙋🏼‍♀️ I thought it collected emails. You answered my question. Thanks! (edited) 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Thank you! 2w
sprainedbrain @CrowCAH The lists that we vote for haven‘t changed since January, other than when I remove a book we already voted for/read or add books on request. As I wrote above, Heartstone is a retelling, so it‘s on the list to vote for the second category every other time. It was on the list for March/April voting and then again for July/August voting, and it will be on the list again when we vote for November/December books. So far it hasn‘t been chosen. 2w
sprainedbrain @CrowCAH Since it hasn‘t been chosen yet, it will stay in the list for next time, but this time we were not voting for a retelling, but a book about Austen for our second book. If you don‘t want to wait for it to be chosen in the vote, you can always start a separate readalong, sort of like @Crinoline_Laphroaig is doing right now for the Jane mystery series. 😃 2w
CrowCAH @sprainedbrain that‘s fine. I‘ll have to plan on when I can devote the time to reading and leading the discussion. 2w

The winner for our September/October book by another female author is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. Our winner for a book about Jane this time is Jane & the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron, which is making things tricky for me. Please read the comments below because this is a long one!

I know several have started the readalong of this book already in August with @Crinoline_Laphroaig. The plan for that series is to read one book a month, so in Sept/Oct those buddyreading will already be past this book. ⬇️

sprainedbrain Please let me know if others still want to/plan to read this book in Sept/October at a slower pace, and, if so, if you‘d like to host.

Otherwise, our second highest vote-getter (1 vote less) was the nonfiction A Secret Sisterhood: The Literary Friendships of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Virginia Woolf.
2w
sprainedbrain Would we rather switch to that book for our Sept/Oct buddy read and those that want to read the tagged book can jump in with #JaneandtheExcellentReadalong? Please comment your thoughts and majority will rule. 😉 2w

#Pemberlittens! Voting has closed and…

Our winner for a book by Jane is Northanger Abbey.

This was hovering between a pick and a so-so for me, but the feelings I have for these characters can‘t be ignored. Well written, solid historical fiction spanning three generations, starting in 1940s China and ending in 2000s United States. It‘s an immigrant story, a family saga, and a bit of a love letter to storytelling. Pretty solid for a debut!

I‘ve had a galley of this book for nearly 3 years. 🫣 So bad, I know, but I am so glad I finally read it. What a hidden gem.

Older characters than I usually read, an unconventional romance of sorts, a lot of family drama, lovely descriptions of the sea and a small Nova Scotian fishing town, aging and disease, some slightly outlandish events that somehow worked beautifully, and a big ol‘ hurricane. Once again, it‘s bittersweet to read one of Austen‘s unfinished works… I loved the fragment that we have, and I‘m sad that we don‘t have a complete novel. Jane‘s whit was on display here, I really think I would end up adoring Emma Watson, and I had my hero picked out too. 😏

I think this was my 4th book by Blakely over the years, and it‘s safe to say this author is not for me.

Cute and kinda hot, but overly sappy, predictable, and oh-so-perfect that I just spent too much time rolling my eyes. 🙄

Oh super… I‘ve fallen into another angsty, sexy, dramatic series of super long books. 😳

I loved this. I completely understand the issues that some reviewers have had with this book, but I was captivated start to finish and I‘m in love with all of these characters. Klune‘s writing alternates between lovely and brutal so seamlessly.

I was woefully behind on the #PemberLitttens buddy read, so I started the audio yesterday and accidentally finished today. 😳

I loved this quiet, funny novel. Mildred is such a great character—I alternated being amused by her, feeling sorry for her, and wanting to shake the sh*t out of her.

My second Pym, and she was just so good!

I really loved the descriptions of the Amalfi Coast, and this book heightened my desire to visit Italy, but that‘s where my enjoyment of this novel ends. Main character Katy is insufferably selfish and immature (I think she‘s supposed to be 30), the ‘romance‘ is cringey, and the bit of magic combined with powerful grief doesn‘t do anything to excuse Katy‘s behavior.

Bummer that this was my free birthday BOTM. 😂

This was between a pick and a so-so… the characters are a bit stereotypical, but I ultimately enjoyed the story and it‘s not badly written. Historical fiction based around a real-life murder in the Adirondacks in 1906, it‘s really more of a YA coming-of-age about a smart girl from a poor family.

This was my #SetInAHotel book for #Booked2022 and had been on my shelf waaaaay too long.

Ok, it is done. Until December 11, and if that isn‘t the last book in this series, and if it doesn‘t end with at least a little happiness, I will riot.

Book 7 was long and slow, but there was so much I loved about it. The bright spots were amazingly bright and just an absolute joy to read, the battle scenes were pretty epic, and we were rewarded for our suffering in previous books with some epic payoffs.

But the end is crushing. 😫

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve had this book on my kindle for almost 10 years, so naturally I went ahead and listened to a library audio instead. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The Shoemaker‘s Wife is a very good book! A long, slow-moving family saga/historical fiction that is beautifully written, with fascinating main characters and a sweet romance. I lost myself in this story, and cried like a freaking baby.

I‘ve seen the mixed reviews (and the massive amounts of burning hatred since the trailer dropped lol)… I do understand why many wouldn‘t like this adaption.

Persuasion is my favorite Austen book (tied with P&P, but I can‘t pick one over the other. I tolerate the 1995 movie, adore the 2007 movie…

I loved this movie. Love the casting, the modernization of language and the fourth-wall breaking.

Basically, 800+ pages of longing, heartache, and overplayed miscommunication trope, with some kickass magic and a few bright spots sprinkled in.💔

Time to rip off the bandaid and read book 7 (almost 1000 pages—why do these keep getting LONGER?!), though tiktok tells me it will break me, and I know I will have to wait until December for the last book. 😫

My #AuthorAMonth selection for the fantastic Jason Reynolds was actually co-authored by him and Brendan Kiely. In the vein of The Hate U Give and I‘m Not Dying with You Tonight, this is a powerful YA about two teenagers (one white, one black) directly impacted by police brutality on an unarmed black kid. It‘s poignant and directly addresses racism and prejudice from various angles.

Really good on audio with dual narrators.

This one has genuine character development, although it also has confusing power dynamics, and the authors continue to actively try to rip our hearts out. Fun times.

I was a bit underwhelmed with this author‘s (smutty) take on my beloved Hades & Persephone, but I couldn‘t resist a dark (smutty) vampire fantasy… and I liked this one!

Sort of predictable, but I loved the bit of court intrigue, the sassy main character Isolde, the magic and witchiness, and of course the dark, super sexy vampire. I went in to this one knowing it was first in a series, and now I‘m looking forward to December.

This is a beautifully written book dealing with a lot of stuff, ranging from treatment of indigenous people of Maine, environmental destruction, war, love, and family. It‘s quiet and sad, and I was very much drawn in to it. I do wish some of the different angles were explored a little more, but overall thought this was a lovely read.

I‘ve not read LaCour‘s previous (YA) novels, but I am in love with this, her first ‘adult‘ novel. Beautifully written, complex and melancholy, this is a character-driven story about two women and their messy lives, and it just feels so authentic to me. The author‘s ability to make fictional characters seem so painfully real put me in mind of Sally Rooney (that‘s high praise).

Great on audio: Julia Whelan is one of the best narrators.
