Bookstore owner Nora Pennington and the rest of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society must solve a murder as cold as the winter windin a new mystery from New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams. While January snow falls outside in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, Nora Pennington is encouraging customers to cozy up indoors with a good book. Even though the shop and her bibliotherapy sessions keep Nora busy during the day, her nights are a little too quietuntil Deputy Andrews pulls Nora into the sci-fi section and asks her to help him plan a wedding proposal. His bride-to-be, Hester, loves Little Women, and Nora sets to work arranging a special screening at the towns new movie theater. But right before the deputy pops the question, Nora makes an unsettling discoverysomeone has mutilated all her stores copies of The Scarlet Letter, slicing angrily into the pages wherever Hester Prynnes name is mentioned. The coincidence disturbs Nora, whos one of the few in Miracle Springs who knows that Hester gave up a baby for adoption many years ago. Her family heaped shame on her, and Hester still feels so guilty that she hasnt even told her future husband. But when a dead man is found on a hiking trail just outside town, carrying a rare book, the members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society unearth a connection to Hesters past. Someone is intent on bringing the past to light, and its not just Hesters relationship at stake, but her life. . .

Decided to listen to this one because I hadn‘t gotten around to the physical book. Still really like this series, the bookstore setting, the friendships, & a mystery that isn‘t too hard to figure out.

Vintage books that are part of a series with flowers decorating their covers keep showing up in random places in Miracle Springs. The name Hester has been cut out of the cover of The Scarlet Letter. And someone is trying to hurt people in Miracle Springs. Nora and Sheriff McCabe are trying to figure out if the books are related to their friend Hester, and if so, how and why?

#5 in the Secret, Book & Scone Society Series

Really enjoying this series. Ready for Paper Cuts (book #6) when it comes out. April feels so far away. Definitely a pre-order for me.

I had a big morning of going to the dump ( household hazardous waste = paint, batteries, electronics) and then to another town to pick up some mid century concrete planters I bought off FB. Hot and sweaty jobs, so the afternoon was spent reading ( finishing) this book and floating. I love this series more with each book

I think we are going to watch Persuasion tonight so I‘m drinking a Lime-Arita from Gin Austen ( a cocktail recipe book with all drinks going with one of JA‘s books) a Persuasion cocktail

KathyWheeler I‘m interested in what you think of the movie. 2y
mcctrish @KathyWheeler I really liked it. It was pretty to look at and it made me laugh and swoon. Just enough bigheads to get mad at. ( I don‘t know persuasion as well as I know P & P but I do not understand all the up in arms over this version at all) 2y
KathyWheeler @mcctrish I didn‘t hate it but I felt that they were going for a Bridgerton feel but couldn‘t commit to it fully. Anne Eliot was also a more introverted character than she‘s played here. I loved Richard Grant as her father, and the woman who played Mary was great. 2y

mcctrish @KathyWheeler I got Bridgerton and last version of Emma vibes for sure. I thought casting was well done. I think I just love all things JA that I will take whatever the people want to make 🤣🤣 2y
KathyWheeler @mcctrish 😄 I truly didn‘t find it as awful as people make out. 2y
mcctrish @KathyWheeler the first reviews I saw completely trashed it and I was thinking “god, what have they done?!” And then The Globe and Mail ( 🇨🇦‘s main national paper) gave it a critic‘s pick and I was baffled. You are right, it wasn‘t awful but it wasn‘t truly original either . After reading Miss Austen by Gill Hornby where Mary Lloyd dismisses JA‘s writing as ‘okay‘ I‘m even more pleased that adaptations continue to be made (edited) 2y
KathyWheeler @mcctrish And despite all that, I still didn‘t hate it. It isn‘t one of those movies where I thought, “Well, I‘ll never get those hours of my life back.” Interesting that reactions to it are so varied. 2y
mcctrish @KathyWheeler ugh typos in my last comment 🤦🏻‍♀️ it wasn‘t awful I meant to say and yes I agree, it is wild that it has garnered such mixed reactions 2y
KathyWheeler @mcctrish You know, I thought there was probably a typo but I wasn‘t sure. 2y

This was so good! I can‘t believe that I didn‘t realize it was out. Good mystery, great growth in all the friends. This started as a mediocre book one for me, but this has become one of my favorite series!

Avanders Argh need to get back to this series! I just… you know, want scone recipes. 🤭 2y
BethM @Avanders I have yet to eat a scone I like. I prefer my bakery soft. (edited) 2y
Avanders Oooh I found this awesome one I wonder if you‘d like… I‘ll send it. If you try it, let me know!! It‘s not very “scone‘y,” which is at least part of why I think you might like it 😁 2y
BethM @Avanders im@always down to try new baking things! 2y

Doing a book tour review on this in a couple weeks, but since I was on a roll with this series & feeling in a cozy mystery mood, I went ahead & finished it. Book 5 in the series this one gives us a bit more of Esther‘s backstory & a good mystery too. It was also fun to see the Valentine‘s Day prep at the bookstore & Blind Date With a Book night as well as move Nora a little further along in her relationship.💜Another finished for #20in4 #readathon

Author Ellery Adams has once again crafted a beautiful story about friendship, books, and of course mystery. The characters are each flawed in their own right but this makes them realistic, relatable, and interesting. The mystery will keep glue to the book until it is solved. The secondary story is equally as well-written as it takes you on an emotional journey, allowing for a wonderful escape into the town of Miracle Springs, NC.
