Thistlefoot
Thistlefoot | GennaRose Nethercott
In the tradition of modern fairytales like American Gods and Spinning Silver comes a sweeping epic rich in Eastern European folklore--a debut novel about the ancestral hauntings that stalk us, and the uncanny power of story. The Yaga siblings--Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist--have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway. But when they learn that they are to receive a mysterious inheritance, the siblings are reunited--only to discover that their bequest isn't land or money, but something far stranger: a sentient house on chicken legs. Thistlefoot, as the house is called, has arrived from the Yagas' ancestral home in Russia--but not alone. A sinister figure known only as the Longshadow Man has tracked it to American shores, bearing with him violent secrets from the past: fiery memories that have hidden in Isaac and Bellatine's blood for generations. As the Yaga siblings embark with Thistlefoot on a final cross-country tour of their family's traveling theater show, the Longshadow Man follows in relentless pursuit, seeding destruction in his wake. Ultimately, time, magic, and legacy must collide--erupting in a powerful conflagration to determine who gets to remember the past and craft a new future. An enchanted adventure illuminated by Jewish myth and adorned with lyrical prose as tantalizing and sweet as briar berries, Thistlefoot is an immersive modern fantasy saga by a bold new talent.

Absolutely gripping! This was a beautifully written story about families, generational trauma, and folklore with unreliable narration that left an ache in my chest. The Yaga siblings/family were written with such quality that I feel everyone will be able to see a bit of themselves and their families in them.

I finished Thistlefoot this week for another traveling book group and it was quite a read! Overall a lovely message with very complex characters. I thought the middle lagged a bit but the ending was perfection! I loved all the Baba Yaga stories woven in throughout. Using this for #booked2023 A Title with a Proper Noun

I'm not certain what happened to my post from last night, but it's gone now. 🤔 Anyway, I started this book last night about the Yaga siblings who inherit a sentient house on chicken legs named Thistlefoot which has arrived in America from Eastern Europe. Unfortunately a sinister figure also arrives at the same time with dark secrets from the past.

Thistlefoot is easily the best novel that I have read all year. The story and characters are gripping and entertaining. I especially enjoyed hearing from Thistlefoot within the narrative. The descriptions are nothing short of amazing, creating a detailed and complete picture of the settings, the characters, the action, etc. There are also sections full of thought-provoking words and ideas that are so insightful. This was a hard one to put down.

Another favorite from 2022 for #adventrecommends @emilyrose_x

This is one of my favorite fairytale reads and definitely one of the best Baba Yaga stories I've ever read.

If you like fun, adventurous stories based on classic fairytales but with a modern twist, check this one out.

An estranged brother & sister from a family of puppeteers inherit Baba Yaga‘s iconic house on chicken feet—and an ancient and terrifying foe—in this playful, powerful, and heart-wrenchingly wise novel that brings Jewish folklore to a modern, magical realist American setting. Thistlefoot has so much to say about generational trauma, history as haunting, the redemptive power of remembrance, and the healing potential of storytelling. A tour de force.

I have been excited to get my hands on this book and it was such a fun read.

You guys are tired of me saying it I'm sure, but I LOVE Baba Yaga stories. This adventurous modern fairytale had a lot of unexpected moments, but in a good way. The writer captured the folklore well and also added in elements that made this story feel fresh.

One of my favorites for the year. 💚

This was so good, I am not even sure there are words to express it adequately! The central themes could so easily have been delivered in a too morally instructive manner, but Nethercott strikes just the right tone.

My knowledge of Russian folklore rests with a few Patricia Pallaco picture books I‘d read with my kids in the 90s. …At times I was a bit confused with the storyline here but decided to quit trying to figure out every detail and just have fun with it. Chapter 43 though - ohhh, broke my heart.

I‘m probably in the minority here, but I did not enjoy this one at all. It was too descriptive for me, and not enough happening. I think I just have a hard time with this type of folklore, because I didn‘t enjoy “Vassa in the Night” either.

My god. This book. When I read the synopsis, I was intrigued. But I just spent the last 200 pages sobbing both out of sadness and horror. The story is significantly more than a fantasy tale. I am broken. I am shattered. I have no regrets.

I think it‘s safe to say that I am not falling for this villain… man‘s bandying about words like pogrom(an organized massacre, especially of Jews,) actively condoning negative eugenics and hinting at weaponized viruses and diseases.

I came into this book expecting a supernatural scary adventure. Not a real life mirroring supernatural horror. 😨😨😨😨😨😨😰😰😰😰😰😰

Oh my goodness, October #BOTM picks went up early!

I need help deciding on my choice, though. I‘ve narrowed it down to these two options. I‘m more intrigued by the plot of Hester (and the pretty cover), but I also like picking up thicker books, since I feel like I‘m getting more bang for my #BOTM buck.

Has anyone read these yet or have thoughts? I‘ll be spying on what people are picking today too.

Ruthiella You can listen to the last So Many Damn Books podcast for an interview with the author of Thistlefoot. Sounds more magical than is my wont, but I‘m sure others will love it. https://www.somanydamnbooks.com/the-damn-show (edited) 4mo

This is a remarkable story. Loosely based on the old Russian tale of Baba Yaga and full of symbolism, this tale will haunt you. Nethercott‘s protagonists – brother & sister Isaac and Bellatine – are challenged to resolve trauma through generational memory as they inherit the infamous Baba‘s house on chicken legs along with an age-old enemy out to destroy the house and those connected to it. Glorious & deadly prose. An absolutely stunning story.

Though flawed for its overwriting and drawn out plotlines, this was well done for a novel of fantasy and magical realism. A pair of estranged artistic siblings inherit their legacy as descendants of the mythical Baba Yaga as they come to terms with their Russian/Slavic Jewish heritage. Beautifully presented in this amazing prose and verse, this is a story about stories, folklore, and culture.
