Mistborn
Mistborn: The Final Empire | Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson, fantasy's newest master tale spinner, author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? What kind of world results when the Dark Lord is in charge? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises and magical martial-arts action that begins in Mistborn. For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark. Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot. But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.Readers of Elantris thought they'd discovered someone special in Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn proves they were right.

I've heard such good things! Am I an idiot for not pushing through the first couple hundred pages?

EastWind76 Not an idiot. I loved the series, but it's not for everyone. :) 1w
AutumnRLS There are really great parts and the trilogy all together is super interesting where it ends up going plot-wise, but I remember feeling like other parts really lagged. You do you. No reading shame! 1w
wordslinger42 I started this but didn't make it past the first hundred or so pages. It just didn't appeal! 1w

This book is the definition of what a wonderful scifi story is supposed to be. A powerful MC, intriguing, well-developed supporting characters, an intricate, believable world, an intense fighting style, and drama that you could only wish for. I am so happy to have found this series. #recentlyread #nospoilers #scifilove #moreplease ❤️❤️❤️

Today was UNPLEASANT, as predicted. It took me until about 11:30 to fully wake up, and I felt crappy alllllll day. Now I‘m headed to bed at 9:00.

Still, I managed to revise stuff and hit my FitBit goals and do some #audiocooking come suppertime. Spicy sausage & tofu scramble with greens makes for a great standby, especially since my Superstore had sausages for super cheap today. I got 28 for $2.70. Should keep me going for a while!

This is what I look at when I #audiorun indoors: a winged mermaid kite I bought on Karangahape Road with some gift money I was forbidden to spend on anything practical. I need a better way to display her.

This morning‘s run went really, really well; a nice surprise after I had to take a week off due to my most hated body part being awful. Fingers crossed this keeps up.

And here‘s a rare selfie to show off today‘s #audiodying efforts. It‘s nice and blue again, but the dye didn‘t take well on the ends—it never does with my hair, in defiance of all convention—and there‘s one troublesome patch on the back of my head that doesn‘t like to absorb colour either. Luckily it won‘t really show when I wear my hair up, which I‘ve been doing most days in a last-ditch effort to keep the ends from breaking so often.

I finally started my MISTBORN reread while I applied my hair dye. None of the selfies I attempted were remotely acceptable, so here‘s a photo of the dye box in lieu of. I love how it turned out last time, but it faded quicker than I wanted it to. I‘m hoping it‘ll have better staying power this time, over the fade-out instead of the red/blonde it went atop before. #audiodying

Seekingtardis This is the color i use too!! And within 4 weeks it was completely gone and the dusty blonde i had is mostly all back now. I love the color just don‘t love the speed of the fade! 1mo
xicanti @Seekingtardis mine turned into a blue-tinged light brown with greenish-yellow streaks. Under some lights it was still SUPER BLUE, but a lot of the time it just looked kind of boring. Fingers crossed for this reapplication. 1mo

I FINALLY finished Mistborn! Only a couple weeks late for the #BBBBC discussion. It had a few slow spots, but the action sequences were fantastic. They were able to build Vin's character quite well, and I did not see that ending coming. Brandon Sanderson has built a great fantasy world here. I'm ready for the next book!

InLibrisVeritas @jpmcwisemorgan I do, thank you! 4mo
InLibrisVeritas I honestly find some of Kell's tactics a little troubling, understandable, but trouble. His ability to write off entire groups of people makes me wonder how things would have progress had he survived to see everything to the end. Would he have came around to Vin's ideas or made a somewhat middle ground between the two? 4mo
MeganAnn @InLibrisVeritas I agree with you! I think he‘s a vigilante type who believed his revolution was the right thing and didn‘t seem to care who got hurt in the process. Towards the end, I was wondering if he was going to end up ruling and if he would end up being just as bad as the Lord Ruler eventually. I could see a definite correlation between Kelsier‘s actions and beliefs and the Lord Ruler‘s thoughts in his journals. 4mo
MeganAnn 5. I would have like the characters to be more rounded and fleshed out. I felt they were kind of flat in many ways as Sanderson concentrated more on the world building and less on the characters. But I did enjoy them anyway and that wasn‘t enough to make me dislike the book. 4mo
LittleBug 4. I agree with the other comments. Although Kel‘s goal is laudable, his methods are very troubling. @MeganAnn The first few chapters I actually wondered if the journal was actually Kel‘s! There was definitely a strong common thread there! 4mo
LittleBug 5. I felt it took a little too long before we started to get to know the characters. And the characterisation felt more in line with YA than with epic fantasy… 4mo
LittleBug 6. The person who wrote the journal was actually quite likeable to me, I was very glad to discover he and the Lord Ruler weren‘t one and the same! I would have liked to see Kel express some more of the doubts expressed in the journal. 4mo
Gezemice @InLibrisVeritas @MeganAnn @Littlebug I agree with everyone. Kelsier was brute-forcing a rebellion, at the same time if you had no change for a thousand years, maybe it is time to do that. And yes, the character development is rather flat and the writing is more YA. As far as the Lord Ruler, we did not know him at all until the very end. Who writes the excerpts is a mystery that Sanderson takes through all three books. 4mo

See All 21 Comments
phatsallylee 1) the story had parts that were very exciting but there were too many slow parts for me. I probably won't read any more in this series but i have steelheart on my tbr 2) sazed and all the religions was very interesting! 3) i think i would choose to be a tineye 4mo
daena Ahhhh. I‘m so behind. I will catch up and revisit the questions. 4mo
cobwebmoth I loved the book. I already bought the next one so that I can continue reading the series. I really liked Sazed. He's an intriguing character. I want all of the powers!😊 4mo
Laughterhp I actually bailed on this book. I read almost 200 pages and just couldn‘t get into it. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️😬 4mo
sebrittain 1) It was a slow start for me, but by the end I loved it. I'll probably keep reading the series. 2) I really liked Ham. 3) probably a soother 4mo
bookandcat The pacing was uneven for me but I thought it was imaginative and will probably finish the series. I liked the girl protagonist but didn't feel like I knew most of the characters as well as I would have liked. I'd probably be a soother because that's my nature lol 4mo
TheSpineView I loved this book. I will definitely read the next book. I want to see were the story is going. I liked all the details and the world building. Since I am a detail person, these kind of books hit all the right notes for me. I do get that it is not for everybody. I would want all the allomancy powers. 4mo
Gezemice I have already finished all three... 😊 I like to go through with series. I liked the world building and the overall plot, and the tiny clues he hides that you can figure. And the Allomancy was great, and highly original. I loved the fight scenes. But I agree with @bookandcat and @phatsallylee that the pacing is uneven. The balls were utterly boring. And Sanderson repeats himself often, and the dialogue is lame. ⬇️ 4mo
Gezemice But I loved the overall story, the revelations, like @TheSpineView . And Sazed is great, @cobwebmoth ! He gets even better in later ones. In the first one, Kelsier was my favorite, and he is greatly missed later. I also liked Vin, but Elend annoyed me. I also want all the powers - the fighting greatly relied on the Mistborn pushing, pulling, flaring pewter, etc. It seems just one is limited too much - although soothing is pretty cool. 4mo
mutlee 1. This was a re-read for me. I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I‘m definitely on the Sanderson fan boat.
2. Most of the characters are pretty likable. Kelsier and Sazed top the list.
3. Well, obviously mistborn is the best, but if I had to choose just one, I‘d probably be a tin eye. I took a silly quiz online, and it confirmed my assumption.
4mo
tonyahoswalt I didn't finish. I got about 150 pages in and was bored, right after a fight scene. I found that fight scene repetitive. Burned this, burned that. I don't know, maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I think I will try again another time. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas @tonyahoswalt He is quite repeatitive in this one, so I understand completely. And it's a very slow start too. 4mo
MeganAnn Overall I enjoyed it! It started out slow and took me awhile to get into it. However the world building is great and the magic system with the different metals is interesting. Sanderson is a bit repetitive and many of the characters are flat. I agree with those above who mentioned that the pacing is uneven. When I got to a slow chapter, it was hard to keep going but once it picked up again I had to find out what happened. 4mo
MeganAnn I did love Vin and Kelsier so finding out where they were going was enough to keep me reading. And Sazed was very cool. I loved the idea that he was collecting religions so they wouldn‘t be forgotten. Not sure yet if I‘ll read the rest of the trilogy, but maybe if I‘m in the right mood. I want to be a Mistborn and have all the powers of course! 4mo
LittleBug A little late to the game... 1. I loved this book! The second one in the series went straight on my Wishlist and my wonderful hubby gave it to me for my birthday. Now to find the time to actually read it 😉I also have another Sanderson Series in my TBR stack, and am rereading the WoT Series that he finished… I‘m well on my way to becoming a fan 😉 4mo
LittleBug 2. Kel actually annoyed me a little, until I started to understand what he was trying to do. I instantly liked Vin, might be some mother instinct kicking in. Sazed was VERY fascinating, I like that we got a bot more of a glimpse of what he can do, I‘m hoping the next books will show us more. 4mo
LittleBug 3. I‘d go for the Gold one…the one that allows for a glimpse into the past. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas @LittleBug Happy Belated Birthday! I am so glad you enjoyed his work enough to continue forward. He is one of my favs and has such rich worlds/ideas. I loved Sazed, and his abilities were incredible. I really want to see more of him too! 4mo

Trying to spend some time with The Final Empire & take some notes for #BBBBC ?

I have been really stressed The library job is starting to show it's bad side. I am finding that my coworkers are "whisperers" who talk about people, & there are some policies that are baffling. EX: If you don't have anything to do behind the desk, you can't read. Though I have seen them play on phones & the computer ? I feel the odd one out most days ??‍♀️

RainyDayReading I‘m sorry that they‘re “whisperers” 😞 that‘s always so frustrating to work with. I had a similar situation at a previous work place except it was all guys! Didn‘t really expect that kind of thing from them but 🤷🏼‍♀️ I hope things become less stressful for you! 4mo

InLibrisVeritas @RainyDayReading It is very frustrating. I just dont understand why they all just passive aggressively go after each other for small easily fixed issues. I unfortunately have great hearing, so I have already heard one about me (the reading thing). They chose to talk about it first, before anyone told me it was looked down on. It's just discouraging bc I thought I had gotten away from that. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas @GlassAsDiamonds Thanks! I hope so to. It all feels unexpectedly juvenile at times. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas @cobwebmoth Thank you, I hope so too. If not, I have backup plans. But I am holding out hope because this is the one job I have wanted for a very long time. 4mo

Gezemice Sorry to hear that! The relationship to your coworkers is the most important at work. I hope it improves! 4mo
Gezemice @RainyDayReading Oh, guys are the worst gossipers. It is a stereotype that women gossip more. Guys might gossip about different things, but gossiping is not gender dependent. 4mo
RainyDayReading @Gezemice Oh I know it‘s not gender dependent. The guys I were around were just being really petty and gossiping about the things that usually I heard my female coworkers at a previous job gossip about (looks, home life, attitude etc.) It was just such a dramatic flip that it caught me off guard. I knew guys gossiped, but I had never been within earshot when they did to hear it. Until now 🙄 didn‘t mean to offend anyone. 4mo

The Final Empire is a truly epic fantasy novel. It's got an incredible world and magic system. It surprised me many times, and I loved the characters and the story. The length was a little challenging for me, since I haven't read anything like this in a while. It took me over a month to finish it, but I'm glad I did. The ending was so good and definitely has me wanting to keep reading the series.

This was not supposed to be the next book I finished, but I got really sucked in yesterday and here we are 🤷🏽‍♀️ I‘m rereading this series because I remember embarrassingly little about it, but this time I‘m listening to the audiobook. The physical book was tough for me for some reason, but I am WAY more invested in the audio version! And I‘m grasping more of the world-building details this time, which are Sanderson‘s specialty.

Mistborn. Knows everything and a badass fighter. Cool, yeah?

I greatly enjoyed the story, the twists, the Allomancy, and the fight scenes. Sanderson is a great action writer. The magic system using different metals is original and highly interesting. However, his characters are one dimensional, his writing is juvenile, and he has a tendency to explain things too many times.

Overall, I both enjoyed it and rolled my eyes often. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

heikemarie My cousin keeps mocking me for not having read this so I guess I should get on it. Thanks for the review! 4mo

Lylah This one was the best one in the series. I couldn‘t even finish the third. 4mo
Gezemice @Lylah Hmm. I am on the second one and I have noticed that the eye-rolling is more frequent, although I am still interested in the story and the fight scenes. But the amount of characters who just blabber about and supposed to be important is astounding. 4mo
Lylah @Gezemice I feel like he used up his big twist plot device on this one. I REALLY did not like the romance in the second book. 4mo
Gezemice @Lylah Yeah well I am not a big fan of romance to begin with, but this is not romance, this is relationship troubles... yeah, not a fan so far. Thankfully there isn‘t too much of it. I enjoy the fights a lot. 4mo
Laughterhp I‘m kinda struggling to read this. I enjoy it when I‘m reading it, but don‘t really have motivation to pick it up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
Gezemice @Laughterhp Lol I have the opposite problem, I am compulsively reading but keep shaking my head... eh, I am referring to the second one, the first one had some eye-rolling but overall I enjoyed it. (edited) 4mo

Mistborn: The Final Empire | Brandon Sanderson

If you like "The Name of the Wind" and are willing to switch an epic story with alchemy to an epic story with allomancy, you will like "Mistborn". P.S. The trilogy is actually finished, so you won't be left hanging.

Really really enjoyed this one. Been wanting to read Brandon Sanderson ever since he finished the WOT series. And he doesn‘t disappoint☺️
He creates a believable world, with an interesting new form of magic (at least, new to me😉). His characters develop well, the story keeps up the pace and even if you saw the end coming, it leaves you with a sense of shock and awe. I‘d recommend it to everyone who loves a good fantasy book!

This is the Jan/Feb selection for the #BBBBC book club. Loved everything about it! The characters are well thoughtout and had debth, interesting plot that moved quickly without being rushed and a couple of twists I didn't see coming. Just a wonderful story all around. 5 stars! The narrator was good too. 4 stars for narration.

hissingpotatoes I was really impressed with all the voices the narrator had for each character throughout this series. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas Yay! I am so glad you enjoyed it! I am bouncing back and forth between the book and the audio, the narrator is pretty good! 4mo

Finally starting Mistborn for book club. Actually tried to start last night but fell asleep. Nothing against book, I was just really tired. This will be my first Brandon Sanderson. I've heard great things! #bbbbc

TK421 I'm about 200 pages in, and I am really enjoying it. 4mo
tonyahoswalt @TK421 I thought this was an average length book until I realized that my copy has super thin pages! I'm going to have to pick up my pace! 4mo
SpeculativeFemale I love Sanderson. I've never been disappointed by anything he's written. 💜 4mo
Jovy This is a great series, enjoy! 4mo
TabbyGibby I read this series years ago (like almost 10) and it still comes to mind as one to recommend to others. Enjoy! 4mo

#FamilyReadingNight ❤️

Diving into the current #bbbbc selection which I picked up from the library today. This is my first Brandon Sanderson book!

My son is rereading Wild Wings by Gill Lewis to prepare for Battle of the Books. They compete on Friday to see which two teams make it to the district competition. #raisingreaders

My husband (not 📸) is on the other couch reading Burning Bright by Nick Petrie. An author he recently found and loves.

InLibrisVeritas Yay! I hope you enjoy your first dive into his work! 4mo
4thhouseontheleft My daughter is on her school‘s Battle of the Books team! They don‘t compete until March. 4mo
SpeculativeFemale I have a serious soft spot for Sanderson. 4mo
monalyisha I‘ve never read him before, either, & a friend of mine is totally gaga for anything he writes. Looking forward to seeing what you think of this (as it‘ll be a pretty good gauge for what I‘d think of it 😉)! (edited) 4mo
MeganAnn @InLibrisVeritas @SpeculativeFemale I‘m enjoying it so far! It took a few chapters to get into the story, but now that I‘m past some of the initial descriptions and know what the crew is working towards I‘m invested in their actions. @monalyisha I‘ll be sure to tag you in my review! 4mo
MeganAnn @4thhouseontheleft good luck to your daughter and her team! Is it her first year participating? This is my son‘s first year and he‘s a little nervous but also excited. 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @MeganAnn 2nd year! Her team was actually the local winners last year, so they get to host this year‘s competition at her school. Home turf. 😃 I will say, it‘s not the most exciting competition to watch. 😂 4mo
MeganAnn @4thhouseontheleft That‘s great that they won last year! Home turf is always nice 😊 My son is on one of four teams from his school - the top two teams move on to the district competition which takes place at a different local school. I expect it doesn‘t quite have the action factor of typical sporting events 😂 Although I think watching kids answer questions about books is better than watching the 100th baseball game of the year. 4mo

Rugby training last night and a 04.40 start today ..... going to be a sleepy bunny today. On the plus side I‘m not car pooling so I‘ve got a few hours of #audible to look forward to 🤗😊 #fantasy #iwanttogotobed

BookNAround I‘m of the firm belief that there should only be one hour starting with a 4 and that‘s the modified by pm. 4mo

I tried, but at nearly 200 pages I‘m calling it: Brandon Sanderson is not for me. I don‘t enjoy his storytelling style and I‘m not hooked by the world or characters. Sorry #bbbbc crew - I feel I‘m letting the side down, but you‘ll be finishing this one without me.

InLibrisVeritas Oh no! I am so sorry it didn't work out for you! Hopefully the next pick will be a winner. 💚 4mo
imyril @InLibrisVeritas Fingers crossed! :) We can‘t love them all (and I‘ve done very well so far this year) 4mo

#AudibleAsks ... since I pretty much only read #chunksters it takes me a while to reread stuff, but the #Wheeloftime has got to be my go to. 🤗 What‘s your? #fantasy #epicfantasy

britt_brooke I could listen to pretty much any David Sedaris book over and over. His humor really comes through with his narration. (edited) 5mo
sprainedbrain The Harry Potter books... Jim Dale is incredible. 5mo
mdhughes72 What @britt_brooke said. I discovered him on NPR back in the early 1990s so for me he‘s always been a spoken-word writer. 5mo

SiriuslyWeasley I listen to the Harry Potter series on repeat, ridiculous, but there it is. 😆 5mo
britt_brooke @mdhughes72 I discovered him backward. 😆 I read all of his books in print until a couple of years ago. Met him (twice now), and have gone back and listened to everything. He‘s a favorite all around. 💚 5mo
Kaye I listen to Sedaris often. I have all his audiobooks. I also love A Girl Named Zippy and her second one, She Got Up Off the Couch. So funny ! Another I‘ve listened to repeatedly are Donald Davis. And Kathryn Tucker Windham. Both southern, both just tell short stories of their lives growing up. I have all of them, but all like an hour long each. I honestly listen to pieces of most of my audios repeatedly. I like people telling me a story I guess 5mo
