meeskite (MEESE-kite)-An ugly person or thing—even a sentiment. Most often used with regard to women. But then, Judaism is the religion where the Orthodox men have a prayer thanking Tod they weren't born women, so there you are.😱😵‍💫😅

zaftig (ZAHF-tig) - Usually with regard to a woman: pleasingly plump, large-breasted, ample. Whether used as a sincere term of flattery or as a euphemism for fat. 😵‍💫😬🤪

#weirdwordwednesday #yiddish

GingerAntics I went to grad school with a woman who used to work at an orthodox Jewish pre-school and they would do the morning prayers with each child as they came in, and she said it was always really weird to do that part with the little boys, like here are all these women teaching these 3 year olds to be sexist. 3d
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Orthodox is a whole 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 3d
IndoorDame I went to conservative day school during the years that they slowly started changing that part of the liturgy. I remember learning women‘s counterpart to that, and even after our teachers decided the community would use the new liturgy it was years before all the prayer books turned over 3d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie she laughed when I said it seemed really ironic that it was women expected to teach them this. She wasn‘t orthodox, but she said it was a job. 3d

Oh, that my head were water,
My eyes a fount of tears!
Then would I weep day and night
For the slain of my poor people.

Jeremiah 8:23

Alter Noyef (AHL-ter NOY'-ef) n. A dirty old man; a "cringy" or annoying person.

?

#yiddish #weirdwordwednesday

julesG I get the "alter" (German: old) but wonder where "noyef" comes from. Also, I want to use this. It's a great insult that no one will understand. Bit like sliding my glasses up my nose using my middle finger 1mo
LiteraryinPA Interesting! I‘ve only heard alter used in the phrase alter kocker. 1mo
TheBookHippie @LiteraryinLawrence which is more like out of touch “old fart” THIS means like lecherous..cringy 😵‍💫😵‍💫👀 1mo

julesG @LiteraryinLawrence Oh, haven't heard that one (in German, obviously) since my grandmother passed. She used to call one of her neighbours "alter Kacker" ??? 1mo
TheBookHippie @julesG 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 1mo
AmyG This is a new one. I only know “alter cocker”….just an old man. 1mo

#WEIRDWORDWEDNESDAY @CBee #yiddish

It‘s just fun to say ??? and I say it often lately …

farkakte (Yid. פֿאַרקאַקטע‎): screwed up, contemptible; literally "shat upon" (see verkackte)

verkakte (Yid. פֿאַרקאַקטע): an adjective, meaning 'screwed up' or 'a bad idea'; literally, 'crapped' or 'becrapped', cf. German "verkackte(r)"

LiteraryinPA I heard this word all the time growing up but I never pictured it being spelled like that! 1mo
IndoorDame @LiteraryinLawrence same! I don‘t exactly picture Yiddish as a written language though, and I can‘t even spell it the languages I do speak, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
dabbe 🤩😂🤩 1mo

Schvitz—to sweat. It's so hot, I'm schvitzing over here!

shvitz

noun: schvitz
a sauna or steam bath.
"our great-grandfather and his brothers went to the shvitz together"

verb: schvitz
sweat.
"it was one of those godawful days with a billion percent humidity and everybody was schvitzing"

rachmones (rahch-MUN-ness) - Compassion, fellow feeling, empathy, pity. "The Rachmones" would also make a very nice name for a sensitive Yiddish punk rock group.

To wish somebody a happy Passover in Yiddish, you would say Gut Yontiff — Pronounced “Guht YON-tiff,” this traditional Ashkenazi expression is a Yiddishized version of the greeting “Good Yom Tov” It can be used on Passover or any of the major holidays.

schmo (shmo) - A hapless sucker, an ordinary jerk.
Slightly pejorative, but it could be worse (e.g., could be putz or schmuck).

CBee I can think of a schmo or two 😂😅🫣🤪 6mo
