Filled with cameo portraits of prominent sports legends of the early twentieth century, this novel brings to life the era in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox, accused of throwing the 1919 World Series, became known as the "Black Sox." Reprint.

@AlaMich This is what I see on my app. I‘m going to see if I can check out the book in your image and see if I have chapter options. Are you using iOS or Android?

AlaMich Thank you so much! 😊 I do use iOS. I didn‘t realize it was by publisher choice and I was pretty sure I‘d seen it before. (edited) 2y

A Hoopla question…is there a way to select chapters from a list when listening to an audiobook? It seems like the app has been updated somewhat, and I can‘t remember if there ever was a way to do that in the past. The scrubbing bar is basically useless.

Am I missing something? Any tips appreciated!
#hoopla

DGRachel You should be able to. On my iPhone, at the bottom of the screen, there‘s an image with the numbers 1-3 and a line next to each number and it says “chapters” below the image. 2y
Ruthiella I think it depends on the book/publisher and not the app. If you can choose chapters, it is found when you swipe to the left side of the book image, whereas the speed is on the right. 2y
AlaMich @DGRachel @Ruthiella Thanks for your replies! I just realized, however, that I didn‘t mention I was referring to audiobooks. I think both of you were referring to ebooks. I just edited my original post. (edited) 2y
See All 10 Comments
DGRachel @AlaMich I have that option on the two audiobooks I currently have checked out. I‘ll post an image of what I see and tag you. 2y
DGRachel @AlaMich I checked the book in your image and the chapter options aren‘t there. I think it‘s like @Ruthiella said - if the publisher provides chapter break information, then you can access it. 2y
Ruthiella I am referring also only to audio books. 👍I pretty much only us Hoopla for those. (edited) 2y
AlaMich @Ruthiella @DGRachel It‘s very frustrating because with some books, I listen and read the print version concurrently, and it makes it difficult to catch up the audio version to my print location. Thanks again for your help! (edited) 2y
Kimzey Is the Sebastian St. Cyr series a good one? 2y
AlaMich @Kimzey I wound up DNFing the book, though at the moment I can‘t remember why. It was probably a me problem, not a book problem. 😊 2y
Kimzey @alamich Thanks 2y

Does anyone know if there‘s a way to get Hoopla on a standard Kindle (not the Fire tablet)? I really can‘t read on my iPad without triggering migraines, but I just discovered Hoopla had almost all of the Akashic Noir books!

LibrarianRyan Nope. Kindle is proprietary to Amazon, and they choose to not let books not as a kindle on their devices that are not fire tablets. 3y
Traci1 I wish you could. I only use their audios because I can't read on my phone. It would be great if it worked like libby. 3y

I was just singing the praises of this service and my local library that provides it to my coworker this past weekend. This is heartbreaking 💔for me. I get most of my audiobooks here as there is no wait period. I hope they are able to bring it back in the future. 😢

LibrarianRyan hummmm. Most libraries started this for the audiobook collection. Then Hoopla bought .... the comics/GN part. It sucks they are taking away the audiobooks. I hope it's not across all libraries. 5y
Exbrarian I just checked my Hoopla account in Houston and ebook and audiobook are not available any longer. They also cut Monthly borrows from 4 down to 2 🙁 5y
ShananigansReads @LibrarianRyan I got a separate email that said the audio/ebook portion is just too expensive ☹️ 5y
See All 7 Comments
LibrarianRyan @Bookjunkie57 I do get that. I don‘t know what the books are but audios are between 3.99 and 6.99 each use. 5y
ShananigansReads @LibrarianRyan oh wow. Makes me feel bad for the borrow I snatch at the end of the month and don‘t end up listening to. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Bookjunkie57 I feel that way too. Some of the long ones where I have to check it out more than once. On overdrive the library buys it once (kind of). 5y

So, it looks like one of the libraries I use has started to use Hoopla. What are the advantages over Overdrive? Are there any? Is it buggy?
My other library is still using Overdrive, so I'll have to keep both on my phone either way. Just wondering if Hoopla is worth the download. I don't know if they are dropping Overdrive or not at this point.
#LitsyKnowsBest #Littensourcing
*Image taken from the library's Instagram page.

DGRachel Hoopla doesn‘t have limits on the number of people who can check out an item. If it‘s in their database, you can check it out right away, assuming you have not exceeded the monthly limit of items your library allows you to check out through them. My library pays to license six check outs per patron per month, but this varies by library. 6y
thereadingowlvina I'm using both Overdrive and Hoopla on my phone. I find that Hoopla has more and better titles than Overdrive. But my library (Calgary) only allows 3 checkouts per month. 6y
rubyslippersreads I get 14 checkouts per month, which is great. And they have some movies and TV shows, which I can watch via the Hoopla app on my TV. Books are a bit buggy; I can‘t make the font as big as I‘d like, and illustrated books sometimes have blank pages. Also, sometimes when you come to the end of a chapter, you have to close and reopen the book to go to the next chapter. But overall, I like it—and it‘s free. 😄 6y
See All 11 Comments
sherryvdh @DGRachel @thereadingowlvina @rubyslippersreads Thanks for all the feedback! Looks like I have 5 checkouts a month. The selection is so much better than overdrive so far! Can't wait to dig in deeper, since all I have had time for was a cursory glance! 6y
thereadingowlvina @rubyslippersreads Wow! 14 checkouts is a lot. Lucky! 😁 6y
Reviewsbylola My library has both. The selections between the two rarely overlap. I am so grateful for hoopla because the wait times for titles on OD thru my library are ridiculous. Usually 3-4 months, even for books that aren‘t new releases. 6y
LibrarianRyan @Reviewsbylola With over drive your library can only give you access to those books that they have purchased for their digital collection. With Hoopla the patron has access to 100% of the titles in Hoopla and the library pays by use rather than buying the entire file. There are advantages and disadvantages for the library. For you. It‘s all good. Download it. 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah I have both and I like both. My library has a lot of books through OD and a lot of digital copies, there‘s just also apparently a lot of patrons using OD too. @LibrarianRyan 6y
LibrarianRyan @Reviewsbylola sorry about that. I didn‘t mean to tag you. That was for @sherryvdh New phone is a little touchy. And I completely agree about the OD wait vs Hoop wait. But some of the publishers won‘t seek to Hoop our there might be more available. Especially older titles. 6y
Reviewsbylola No problem! 😃 @librarianryan 6y
sherryvdh @Reviewsbylola @LibrarianRyan Thanks! The wait times on overdrive can be crazy, so its definitely a perk that it won't be an issue with hoopla. 6y

I love when my Hoopla borrow limit resets, but I wish my library allowed more each month. I go through them too quickly!! Hoopla has a few that My Libby app doesn‘t have so I enjoy the variety. Maybe I‘ll try to space them out more 🤔😩😂

LibrarianRyan Hoopla limits are so low because libraries pay per use. It's nice because it opens the entire catalog to the public but it's also bad because it's hard to budget. 6y
SledgeReader @LibrarianRyan @Ash.on.the.line Do either of you have feedback on Hoopla content? We are considering a subscription and are weighing customer interest based on titles. Appreciate your thoughts. 6y
LibrarianRyan @SledgeReader hoopla doesn't always have the newest audio titles but the graphic novel collection is quite nice. If you are a small library on a limited budget Hoopla is great because your patrons would have full access to the catalog which would always contain more titles than the library could ever purchase. 6y
See All 12 Comments
Ash.on.the.line @SledgeReader librarianRyan definitely has more info than I do, of course, but I agree with what she says, as a user. I use it primarily for the graphic novel selection, and audios that Libby doesn‘t have. Not always the newest but they have a pretty good selection. 6y
SledgeReader @LibrarianRyan @Ash.on.the.line My bad! I should have specified the video subscription. We use OverDrive and Freegal for audiobook. I couldn‘t live without them. Do either of you know anyone using the video service? 6y
LibrarianRyan @SledgeReader I have not used it but my guy does every month to watch German cinima and independent films. I think he can watch 5 a month. 6y
SledgeReader @LibrarianRyan Thanks for the info!! Good to hear. 6y
Ash.on.the.line @SledgeReader I don‘t use it often either, once browsing though, they have a wide selection but nothing fresh out of theaters that I can see. Hope this helps! 6y
SledgeReader @Ash.on.the.line Great feedback. Just the info we are looking to know. Thanks! 6y
LibrarianRyan @SledgeReader asked josh tonight. He said they have a lot of older movies. He also said he likes the unique series he could find there that were not on Netflix or HBO. 6y

See All 30 Comments
Clwojick I do have a daily limit of two and a monthly limit of six tho! 7y
LibrarianRyan As a librarian I want to point out the problem is NOT Hoopla. It's the library BUDGET. When we libraries set this up we set limits not only for how many items can be checked out per time limit by a patron, but also how much the library can spend per day. Hoopla is a pay for play platform. You have access to the entire platform, but the library pays every time you download. Prices may have changed but it was running $3.99 audio, 1.99 a book, 👇🏻 (edited) 7y
LibrarianRyan ☝🏻4.99 movie, etc. to make sure a library can pay their bill they set daily/ monthly spending limits. With a service like Overdrive/Axis 360/ Cloud library, the library buys titles individually. There may be time limiting factors depending on the publisher but you the patron only have access to what the librarian has chosen to purchase. And usually a libraries prices is 3-4x the consumer price for digital materials. 👇🏻 7y
LibrarianRyan ☝🏻so please be kind to your libraries. They are strapped for $$. Make a donation, volunteer, or just find out more and ask how you can help. Libraries are trying to offer our patrons all they want/need with smaller and smaller budgets. The director has to make choices every day, and those choices SUCK. Experience speaking!! Plus many libraries offer multiple digital services. @Jess7 @JacqMac @Clwojick 7y
LibrarianRyan @Jess7 Libby is Overdrive. It's just their nephew Mobil app. I think eventually they will make everyone switch over as they phase out the old app. 7y
Clwojick @LibrarianRyan 🙌🙌🙌 thanks for the insight! 7y
Jess7 @LibrarianRyan - I've just heard a lot of complaints about it. I like my overdrive and so far I haven't heard any talk of the other apps at my local library. 🤞🏼I like to support my library by donating and buying books at their various books sales throughout the year. I absolutely love my library and they're great at getting books quickly! (edited) 7y
LibrarianRyan @Jess7 I still use the old app as well. But I'm not a fav of the company. I wrote an article for our local paper about why my library was dropping Overdrive and it was picked up for national news. Phone wouldn't stop ringing for weeks. 7y
Jess7 Can you post a link to the article? I'm interested to know why you're not a fan - @LibrarianRyan 7y
JoeStalksBeck @LibrarianRyan I love my OD and I used Hoopla but it just keeps crashing. I have Libby too but for now OD is my main book search❤️ 7y
OneCent76 Your library dropped ODL @LibrarianRyan ? Kinda shocking! I don't have many issues with Hoopla and use it quite a bit. Talk to your library about the issues you are having, maybe they can help! 7y
LibrarianRyan @OneCent76 yes. It's a long story. We replaced it with Cloud library from eReadIllinois. In the long run it was a better option. That was about 5 or 6 years ago. It was painful but necessary. 7y
JeaMar82 My library only let's me download 6 things a month. Definitely not enough. 😂 7y
LibrarianRyan @Jess7 I'll see if I can find it. I'm a fan, it was a cost issue. We merged library systems and a few others went defunct, and then the powers that be went playing with the fees each library was paying. Our fee went up 300% (not OD's) fault, and that was just the privilege of having the platform. It took away all our ebook $$ and there was none left to actually spend on books. 7y
CocoReads In our system we can have 10 hoopla downloads a month. I keep forgetting about though so I rarely use them all but never have trouble with it. I used to have trouble with OD all the time but haven't had many troubles with Libby. But again, I tend to forget about them and only use them in case I have an after hours library emergency! 😂😂 7y
LibrarianRyan @Jess7 I no longer run this library, but here is the article. Http://bit.ly/2hgT9EP 7y
Aseleener I am so sorry you are having probs with Hoopla. You should contact your library if it continues. We encounter a few glitches every once in a while too, but they work themselves out. I love it bc the hold times on my library system's Overdrive are ridiculous. I use them both; they kind of serve different purposes for me. We get 8 checkouts per month; never heard of a daily limit. 7y
DGRachel This has happened to me several times. I find it very frustrating especially since it seems to happen when I am no where near my personal limit. 7y
JacqMac @LibrarianRyan Thanks for that. It's helpful to know how these things work. I donate as much as I can to my library. They recently did away with fees for library cards, so I'm sure money is tighter then ever for them. 7y
Andrew65 How ridiculous! 7y
readordierachel Booooooooo 7y
KathyWheeler Have you asked the library about why they set this limit? I'd be interested to know. I've never encountered this on my library's Hoopla. 7y
Clare-Dragonfly @LibrarianRyan That's interesting! My library has both Overdrive and Cloud Library, but I only use Overdrive because it's the one that can deliver ebooks to my Kindle. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Clare-Dragonfly yep. Delivering to your kindle is an Amazon thing. They have it on lockdown. It took forever for them to even agree to work with overdrive. Maybe one day, buts it's just one of the reasons I never recommend kindles. 7y
Clare-Dragonfly @LibrarianRyan Well, of course it's an Amazon thing... back when they started doing it, I'd never even heard of any other ebook library lending. Do any of the others send directly to any e-ink reader? 7y
LibrarianRyan @Clare-Dragonfly no. Most you have to connect to the computer and transfer. I believe. I haven't checked out the newer books yet. I haven't kept up in over a year and a half. 7y
Reviewsbylola Wow, that's so crazy @LibrarianRyan I had no idea about hoopla. Now I feel bad when I download multiple titles on the chance that I may read them, even though I know I likely won't. 😬😬 7y

My library is joining Hoopla next week! I'm a Kindle and audiobook girl all the way, so I'm super excited. I don't completely understand how it works though. I'm a pro at Overdrive; how is it similar and different? Please share the basics of using it and any tips/tricks/tidbits. Thanks! #hoopla #help

Bookworm83 I love Hoopla! It's super easy to use...just search or browse and then download. You are allowed 5 titles per month. The great part is that all titles are available to everyone, so there is no putting anything on hold. If it's in the database you can download it. 7y
DGRachel We're allowed 6 titles per month with my library, so you'll want to check the limits yours has, but like @Bookworm83 said - if it's in their database, you can download it without delay. 🤓 7y
8little_paws Each library has its own amount they allow you to borrow, as well as type of media. It's much much better than overdrive IMO. 7y

Aseleener No holds? 😮 That is so awesome! 😍 That's a huge problem I have with Overdrive. Thanks @Bookworm83 @DGRachel @8little_paws I can't wait til the 8th to explore. 7y
8little_paws My library gives us access to audio, ebooks, comics, music, tv, and movies through it. I use it primarily for audiobooks, ebooks, comics, and I'm starting to branch out into tv and movies 7y
moranadatter I wish my library would join. It looks fantastic! 7y
Reviewsbylola My library gives 12 titles a month! I didn't realize how good that was. In my experience, they have more audio books available than ebooks. Also, there is a lot of variation between what ebooks my library has vs. what hoopla has, so that's nice. 7y
LindsayReads I loooove Hoopla! I have had problems occasionally when it forgets where I left off on an audiobook, be forewarned. Also, in order to conserve your monthly checkouts, I'd suggest listening to audio samples on Amazon so you know you like the reader (Hoopla doesn't have an audio sample option)/with comics, check out the volume, not single issue. 7y
Gulfsidemusing We get only 5 titles per month. Immediate access is the best ... no hold list!! 7y
