Live by Night
Live by Night | Dennis Lehane
Joe Coughlin is nineteen when he meets Emma Gould. A smalltime thief in 1920s Boston, he is told to cuff her while his accomplices raid the casino she works for. But Joe falls in love with Emma - and his life changes for ever. That meeting is the beginning of Joe's journey to becoming one of the nation's most feared and respected gangsters. It is a journey beset by violence, double-crossing, drama and pain. And it is a journey into the soul of prohibition-era America... A powerful, deeply moving novel, Live By Night is a tour-de-force by Dennis Lehane, writer on The Wire and author of modern classics such as Shutter Island, Gone, Baby, Gone and The Given Day.

Second in his historical trilogy centred on the Coughlin clan of Boston. The third Couglin son, Joe, who we last met as a cocky twelve-year-old, has embarked upon a life of crime and soon gets embroiled with some of Boston's nastier elements. It's a fast-paced story of hoodlums and gorgeous dames which also contains a description of prison life so grim if makes The Shawshank Redemption look like Porridge.

2nd in this great series sees yngest son Joe coughlin at the centre, & in prohibition Boston, disillusioned by his brs + father turning to crime. The ensuing story is a rollercoaster as it traverses a decade where life is cheap and violence is routine. A real page turner so I abandoned mowing the lawn to read in a sunny garden.
Can't wait to read the next volume
#20in4 definitely past 20 chapters, so far probably 7 hrs reading since Fri.

Cathythoughts Reading in a sunny garden sounds right 👍🏻 3y

Even though I prefer Shutter Island, I also couldn't stop myself from loving my second book by Lehane. He sure went straight to my list of favourite authors. It's a calmly told story even though fast scenes appear. But it really is a character book, focuding on Joe, his decisions, his life. And through him, the time of Prohibition comes back to life.

The sequel to Lehane's "The Given Day,” which I also enjoyed. Lehane has a way with dialogue that is just so fresh and believeable. I lived in Boston for 10 years, and when the characters in his books speak I can hear their voices in my head. This continues the story that began in Boston at the end of World War I. You could call it a gangster saga, as it takes place in prohibition-era America with its violence, rum running and vying for power.

"'Achievement? Depends on luck, to be born in the right place at the right time and be of the right color. To live long enough to be in the right place at the right time to make one's fortune. Yes, yes, hard work and talent make up the difference. They are crucial, and you know I'd never argue different. But the foundation of all lives. Good or Bad. Luck is life and life is luck. And it's leaking from the moment it lands in your hand...'"

Its a mobster book that is not about violence, wars, killings, drugs or whatever you associate with the mob. This book is so much deeper than that. It touches issues on race, freedom, religion, family, human nature and love. I've loved all the characters even the rotten ones because they were 3 dimensional. I love the uniqueness and depth of this book!

Good story with a main character who easily could have been written to hate who you pull for.

#Bookhaul. One book today. Books are never alone though, as each contains an entire universe within itself. Anyway, so I might as well start my Dennis Lehane reading with this title, coming out as a movie soon, if I'm not mistaken. The gritty sidewalk seems somewhat apropos based upon the book's premise ???. Any Dennis Lehane fans? Is "Mystic River" really his best one? #TBRtemptation #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

MicheleinPhilly I think Mystic River might be the only one of his I've read but it was 👌🏼. 7y
CocoReads I love the Kenzie/gennaro series although they are super violent. Mystic River was aces, I'm not a huge fan of Shutter Island though and I haven't made it to Live By Night yet. 7y
MyNamesParadise I love his Patrick and Angie series. The movie Gone Baby Gone was directed by Ben Affleck and starred his brother Casey. GBG was the 4th book in that series and Ben's directorial debut! Loved the book and the movie! Affleck adapts a lot of Lehane's work! Shutter Island by Lehane is also amazing! 7y

CocoReads @MrBook I have a bit of a book crush on him... 7y
Centique I love those movies, didn't realise he also wrote Shutter Island. I guess I'm a Lehane fan but I just didn't know it! 😂 *adds all the books to TBR* 7y
BostonBookAddict Omg I love Dennis Lehane!!! I think The Given Day is my favorite - so many story lines that blend together amazingly well, a time frame in Boston not highly covered, and amazing writing! However, all his books are amazing! The Patrick and Angie series is so sarcastic amd suspenseful! The Given Day is the first in the Coughlin series. Live By Night is the second but can be treated as a stand alone 7y
MrBook @CocoReads I could tell ☺! @Centique 😂😂👏🏻👏🏻! @BostonBookAddict You know your Lehane 😎👍🏻! 7y
BostonBookAddict @MrBook counting down till May 7th when his new book is coming out! 7y

I think I referenced Ellroy in my review of the first in this series and this cements that connection. There's more heart here and while some of the leaps serve the narrative more than they serve logic, there are enough action set pieces to keep things moving.

I will see the Ben Affleck movie but now that I know Joe and Emma are supposed to be 20 when they meet, it may be harder to take seriously.

Apparently this is coming out in January 2017 starring Ben Affleck. I really liked this book, Boston in the '20's and all that ensues. #somethingforsept #madeintoamovie @RealLifeReading
