The Constant Princess
The Constant Princess | Philippa Gregory
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and queen of royal fiction (USA TODAY) Philippa Gregory comes the remarkable story of Katherine of Aragon, Princess of Spain, daughter of two great monarchs, and eventual Queen of England when she marries the infamous King Henry VIII.Daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain, Katherine has been fated her whole life to marry Prince Arthur of England. When they meet and are married, the match becomes as passionate as it is politically expedient. The young lovers revel in each others company and plan the England they will make together. But tragically, aged only fifteen, Arthur falls ill and extracts from his sixteen-year-old bride a deathbed promise to marry his brother, Henry; become Queen; and fulfill their dreams and her destiny. Widowed and alone in the avaricious world of the Tudor court, Katherine has to sidestep her father-in-laws desire for her and convince him, and an incredulous Europe, that her marriage to Arthur was never consummated, that there is no obstacle to marriage with Henry. For seven years, she endures the treachery of spies, the humiliation of poverty, and intense loneliness and despair while she waits for the inevitable moment when she will step into the role she has prepared for all her life. Then, like her warrior mother, Katherine must take to the battlefield and save England when its old enemies the Scots come over the border and there is no one to stand against them but the new Queen.

Work is slow, so I‘m catching up on my reading! I didn‘t love this one - it just felt SO SLOWWWWWW. I‘m not sure how close it is to historical accuracy, especially compared to Alison Weir‘s very thorough historical novel of Katherine of Aragon. Onwards in the series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kristina7 Agree! Super slow. The whole “tell me a story” device to reveal Catalina‘s backstory was completely overdone. And so much repetition - I am a Queen of England repeated 1000000 times - was tiresome and dull. 12mo

10 years ago I had my first binge-watching experience with The Tudors. I was hooked both with binge watching and the Tudors. I love to revisit this era - it is so darn interesting.

OnlyYoo They did such an amazing job with the show. I think that Natalie Dormer portrayed Anne Boleyn much better than Natalie Portman in the other Boleyn sister 3y
marleed @OnlyYoo I loved that series. My education was through Catholic schools and I was honestly shocked at the protestant-catholic information. It might have been the first time that something I read or saw had me researching for so much more information. And and important reminder that the history I learned was influenced by the authors who f my text books. 3y

Got my first bingo with this one! #bookspinbingo

Sometimes, I really love Gregory‘s novels. Sometimes, I don‘t. This is one I love! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks Great progress on your bingo!!! 3y
wideeyedreader @TheAromaofBooks Thanks! It‘s been lots of fun so far! 3y
TheAromaofBooks I think I'm going to make the bingo aspect be a permanent part of BookSpin - it's a really flexible way for people to either read just their BookSpin/DoubleSpin OR go crazy and read as many more as they want. I'm really loving the way that it is working out for everyone! 3y

“There was a scream, and then the loud roar of fire enveloping silken hangings, then a mounting crescendo of shouts of panic that spread and spread from one tent to another as the flames ran too, leaping from one silk standard to another, running up guy ropes and bursting through muslin doors.”

A long one this week! #firstlinefridays

I am enjoying this series of books and usually get anywhere from 3-5 books (at least) when I go to the bookstore, but the other day when I went someone bought all of Philippa Gregory‘s books!! They didn‘t have a single one!! But not to worry, I found everything I was looking for on eBay!! I think I bought 5-6 books!!

Butterfinger I enjoy reading her books on royalty. She has a series that I despise because of incest. It was as bad as Flowers in the Attic series. 3y
Lauraandherbooks @Butterfinger what series is that? 3y
Butterfinger @Lauraandherbooks Wiseacre Trilogy - I loved Gregory so I thought it was a fluke, maybe she was on drugs or something. I was trying to rationalize. So I read the second and it was worse. I'm sure there are some who can stomach it, but it wasn't for me. Just a fair warning. 3y
Lauraandherbooks @Butterfinger thank you for letting me know!! I have one of those books and was planning on getting the others to eventually start reading; but if it‘s like that I‘m not interested 😖 definitely not something I want to read 3y

This was my first foray into "Royal" historical fiction.
I'm a massive historical fiction fan, but have never read any books about court life.
I really enjoyed getting to know the Tudor family members and some history about the royal English family.

Lauraandherbooks Have you read the other books in the series? 3y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @Lauraandherbooks I have 😊. I read the two books on the Boleyn family. Absolutely loved it! 3y

Starting a whole new type of book (and series). *Royalty* and the history surrounding them. Quite excited to get into these books 🤩🤩

ljuliel I‘ve not read any of these but I think there are a lot to choose from. I hope you enjoy them. 👑 3y
Scochrane26 I read a lot of these a few years ago. Some I liked better than others. Got bored with the most recent ones. I really liked this one. They can be confusing because it seems everyone has the same name. 3y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @ljuliel You are so right. Took me ages to figure out 'where to start". Still not sure I'm right ? 3y

Yoricke_SouthAfrica @Scochrane26 I'm only a few pages in, and I'm already finding that. Must be "the times" ?. 3y
marleed @Yoricke_SouthAfrica @ljuliel @Scochrane26 Haha. That reminds me of the Colleen McCullough book about The Fall of Rome. I read it years ago but still come across this map of names I had to write down. So many names ending in ius- Marius, Cassius, Thesius... 3y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @marleed That is so true. Only in this one, the names don't only sound the same, they are actually the same. Older Queen Margaret, young princess Margaret, Lady Margaret... the struggle is real. 🤔😂 3y

“Tell me a story . . . “ I liked this telling of Catherine of Aragon‘s story prior to the whole ugly business with the annulment and the Boleyns. I particularly enjoyed that it didn‘t shy away from the influence Arab culture and war fighting had on her due to the Moorish occupation of Spain. You don‘t often find historical fiction about her that mentions how interesting her own story was - she‘s typically just Henry VIII‘s Rejecto Girl.

I just finished reading this insightful book. It is a great book to read for anyone who wants to start reading historical fiction. I say this from personal experience. This is so simple and well-written and well-researched. The lies, the ambition and Gregory's narration will keep you hooked.
(The TV show, The Crown 👑, got me interested in the Queens of England. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a little push to read about the royals.)

A fascinating interpretation of history, this book follows Katherine of Aragon during her introduction to the drama of life and politics in England. While I‘ve always been aware of Katherine as the first wife of Henry VIII, I never knew much beyond that—I‘m glad to know a bit more about her now.

I love how the story depicts her love for her beloved. And how strong she is as a woman as well as her faith despite that many struggles... Sad she didnt go down in history as a Queen. But she did make her mark!

She shall forever be Catalina, Infanta of Spain. Katherine of Aragon, Queen of England. True model of grace and dignity.

She's now my favorite queen by far as the books i've read.

Anyone have an Overdrive book that sounds like a bad recording? My speaker is fine, it's just one book that sounds awful.

Megabooks This is my problem with Hoopla! No one else has it. I know some of the older books (like >10 years) I've listened to on Overdrive sound like they are uploaded, used CDs. Is that it? 6y
HippieChickHomeschool @Booksandcooks I had a terrible time with Hoopla! My husband did too. It just clicks off all the time, no warning. This book on Overdrive definitely sounds like a scratched cd. Or an old scratched record! 6y
