Jaws | Peter Benchley
158 posts | 160 read | 2 reading | 71 to read
Here is Peter Benchleys classic suspense novel of shark versus man, which was made into the blockbuster Steven Spielberg movie. The Jaws phenomenon changed popular culture and continues to inspire a growing interest in sharks and the oceans today. When Peter Benchley wrote Jaws in the early 1970s, he meticulously researched all available data about shark behavior. Over the ensuing decades, Benchley was actively engaged with scientists and filmmakers on expeditions around the world as they expanded their knowledge of sharks. Also during this time, there was an unprecedented upswing in the number of sharks killed to make shark-fin soup, and Benchley worked with governments and nonprofits to sound the alarm for shark conservation. He encouraged each new generation of Jaws fans to enjoy his riveting tale and to channel their excitement into support and protection of these magnificent, prehistoric apex predators. This edition of Jaws contains bonus content from Peter Benchleys archives, including the original typed title page, a brainstorming list of possible titles, a letter from Benchley to producer David Brown with honest feedback on the movie adaptation, and excerpts from Benchleys book Shark Trouble highlighting his firsthand account of writing Jaws, selling it to Universal Studios, and working with Steven Spielberg. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A tightly written, tautly paced study of terror [that] makes us tingle. The Washington Post Powerful . . . [Benchleys] story grabs you at once. The New York Times Book Review Relentless terror . . . Youd better steel yourself for this one. It isnt a tale for the faint of heart. The Philadelphia Inquirer Pure engrossment from the very opening . . . a fine story told with style, class, and a splendid feeling for suspense.Chicago Sun-Times

Another scary movie done for 2points! I first saw Jaws when I was about 6 or 7, it‘s given me a lifelong phobia of swimming at sea🦈It also gave me a fascination with the Indianapolis, Quints monologue about the sinking is mesmerizing. As far as I‘m concerned, it‘s the finest piece of acting, and writing, ever filmed. A perfect movie all round. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 2points #PointsTotal-689

This book is not just about some killer shark. Just like any book there is a protagonist and an antagonist. I would dare to say the protagonist is the people, their safety, well+being, and ability to provide for their family or community even. And the antagonist is the shark, which literally threatens the islanders way of existence. But a Shark will cause a more visceral reaction than any power figure that carries out this same culling day to day.

📖 Jaws, although I will confess to never having read it....I'm too scared! Sharks are one of the few things that scare me to the point of potentially not being able to handle it!

🎬 Finding Nemo-“Fish are friends, not food!“

🎶 Shark in the Water by VV Brown

Happy Monday! #manicmonday

Godislove It was much scarier to watch it and read it. Benchley actually used a more scientific narrative when describing the Villain. Mr. Peter kept calling it a fish. Hard to imagine a Maneater when it keeps getting referred to as a fish. 3mo

Jaws has been my favorite film since 9th grade, so after spotting this at the library I set out to compare the two. Character development in the novel is (of course) more fleshed out, especially Chief Brody. Though I found Benchley‘s Quint very endearing, I much prefer Spielberg‘s take on Hooper. The film still has me hook, line & sinker - but I loved reimagining my favorite trio hunting down the Great White stalking the shores of Amity. 🦈

The image of tickling a Great White is so funny. 😂
Jaws is one of my favourite movies. The book doesn‘t disappoint, even though, the movie was better. Benchley writes a great deal about a few irrelevant characters, who make no difference to the plot. All that matters to me is the shark. 🦈Glorious in the movie, glorious in the book. 🦈

1. Toss up between YA Fantasy and Thriller. I read a lot of both
2. Everything. I'm such a wimp. My worst though is open water....and the things that live in it. *shudder*
3. An archaeologist. No idea where that came from but I loved the idea
4. I think it's going to go up to -1 today....which means snow is coming 😑
5. Will do! 👋👋
#friyayintro @howjessreads

Kaye Would you count a swimming pool as water you‘re afraid of or are you thinking more of lakes and oceans ? 10mo
FantasyChick @kaye No pools. Funny story, on vaca a few years back my kids wanted to go to the hotel pool. They know my fear but wanted me in too. Youngest starts putting water floaties on my arms to keep me "safe". How can you say no? I lasted 10 mins tops before the hyperventiliating started. It's bad. It's only been this past year that I've even been able to enjoy a bath. 10mo
FantasyChick Now, I can go TO the water. Sit on the beach or go fishing at the lake. And I like boats, but I have to have a drink or two in me before I get on or I completely freak out. Also....frozen water is just as bad. 10mo
See All 6 Comments
Kaye Do you have any idea why ? Anything as a kid that happened to make you afraid or is it just there ? That‘s like me with airplanes. Never been on one, never will. I can‘t stand to watch them take off. Strangest thing. I can SEE the plane blow up as it‘s leaving the ground. I‘ve ALWAYS been this way. 60 years. Weird how we are scared of certain things. 10mo
FantasyChick @kaye Nope. No reason why. I honestly feel that it might be a control issue. Water is so vast and unknown. You really can't control it or what's in it. I don't like being a car passenger for that reason. I need to be in control of the car or I'm uncomfortable. It's weird. Maybe a similar situation with your plane fear? All unknown and uncontrollable 10mo
Kaye You‘ve probably hit the nail on the head. I also would rather drive than ride in the car. The loss of control. Good answer. 👍🏼 10mo

Thought I would pick up a famous classic, and it was definelty worth it. Not a single page of this book was boring and I stayed up into the early hours of morning reading it. The characters felt so real with Peter Benchley revealing their backstories as if he were gossiping about them. His way of describing peoples character is unforgettable. This book was not merely about a shark but how people change under trial and the affect it has on others.

ProfReader Great classic... Welcome to Litsy!!!💙💜❤️ 10mo

Normally when I read a book that is also a movie, I enjoy the book far more than the movie, but not in this situation. For me personally, I wanted to read less about Brody and his wife and more about the ferocious fish terrorizing people. Still a fun, fast read, but not quite a pick for me.

Joe Hill believes that an extra from Jaws is the Jane Doe known as the Lady in the Dunes. Color me tantalized!

“When faced with grotesque, inexplicable tragedies,” he said in the WaPo article, “one of the ways that human beings master their own anxiety and concern is by trying to reduce it to a crossword puzzle, and if you have the right inspiration, you can bring order back to chaos.”

Stormy afternoon, the puppy is napping and I‘m curled up under the blanket with this quick read. Perfect timing for shark week.
