I've always wanted to read this classic so I'm glad I finally have! At first the writing was odd but considering how old this book is I should have expected it. Also the themes and ideas in this book are very traditional, and even fairly dark at times. The world of Neverland was so magical but not overly detailed, the plot was basic but fun, and overall the novel is quite short and easy to read quickly, I enjoyed the ending though its disturbing😂

We received a beautiful copy of Peter Pan for Christmas and we read it for bedtime story. I had only watched the Disney film, so I was shocked by the book. Peter Pan is a horrible character my son even started cheering on Captain Hook. Don‘t even get me started on Wendy and spring cleaning! #peterpan

I am using the tagged book for March's prompt for my #fairytalereadingchallenge

I listened to this dramatisation of the classic story done by Audible studios so the tagged book is just so I can post this. Although this is supposed to be aimed at children there are moments that only adults will enjoy.

not finished reading it but of what i have read so far, its really good. its about a magical fairy named peter pan who is always from the run from captain hook. its the same as the fairy tale, so far and its definitely one to read. it is an action book, of what i know so far.

I picked this one up for the #FairyTaleReadingChallenge but sadly it was not for me. I can see why some people are nostalgic about this one, but I didn't care for any of the characters or even the writing, which was casually cruel on more than one occasion (the final chapter/epilogue - "Mrs. Darling was now dead and forgotten" as a throwaway line - seriously? By her husband and NINE children?? Ugh) It's always good to check a classic off the ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) list but ironically this one is getting a “pan“ from me.

Wife Tried to read this once and bailed. I thought it was awful. 10mo
wordslinger42 I forgot about that line in the epilogue! Ouch! I remember thinking that Peter Pan was not a very likeable character when I read it last year, and I can see why writers have made him a sort of sinister figure in some of the retellings! 10mo

ravenlee I struggled so hard to finish this one, and then all I got was a slight sense of accomplishment but no satisfaction - and tons of frustration. 10mo

Charityann Yes, I agree that the classic version is not nearly as good as the Disney version, and I remember being disappointed after I first read it. (edited) 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @Wife @ravenlee @Yuki_Onna @Charityann - I can see why it has warm feelings for some people (I also have childhood favorites that other people don't like haha) but this one wasn't a good match for me. Ah well, they can't all be winners!!! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @wordslinger42 - I can see there being a lot of scope for variations/retellings, especially ones aimed at an older YA audience. I think part of my not-liking this one is that it's supposedly a children's book & I didn't feel like it fit that genre at all. Embracing some of the darker elements in a story for older readers may make things work better. 10mo

The ending of this book made me s o b.
I found it beautiful and melancholy. This book touched me on a personal level and has left me in a sorry state I have to admit. I loved it. I plan on going back and underlining all my favorite lines because there was so many. Peter was written so well as was Wendy and I loved the narration.

I read this years ago and wasn't that impressed, but I decided to revisit. My second read proved underwhelming once again for me.

In general I love the concept and characters of Neverland, I just always get bored by the story.

I'm excited still to try some other retellings of this classic though.

night_shift I'm reading this right now and so far it's been very strange! I've never read it before, but I like the Peter Pan story.. we'll so if I so-so it as well. 11mo

mandarchy @Addison_Reads, @UnidragonFrag, @bibliobliss, You all might try Dave Barry's Peter and the Starcatchers. If I recall, the original Peter Pan was intended for the stage and then came out as a book so it's just awkward. But Dave Barry is hysterical and the starcatchers series is genius. 11mo

This was my third reread of Peter Pan and I have such a love/dislike for this book. I love the story of Peter Pan, what kid didn‘t want to fly off to Neverland to see mermaids and pirates? It is so exciting and thrilling. However the book is so fast moving that pieces are missing and you have to fill them in yourself or rely on you memory of the movies because you need those to sometimes know what is happening. Still love it though!!

I must be honest as I child I was only watching the Disney series. As a grown-up I've read it and I've realised that it's hearth breaking since the beginning. Like many other children stories, as an adult you will discover another world. And like superheroes in US, these stories have been created to bring hope and joy where there was none left.

This is surely going to be an unpopular opinion and likely to give me some hate, but I didn't like this one much.
Some social commentary, some 19th/early 20th-century racism, some platitudes, a crude story and a lot of wound up nonsense.
3* for some thoughts and the literary and cultural merit it seems to have earned only.
Edit: I've got to lower its rating down to 2*. The book is far too boring and not ok for me to get a neutral rating.

Eh. After three tries over the years it‘s finally finished, and I don‘t really feel happy about that. This book shows its age: the Picaninnies are a truly atrocious depiction of indigenous peoples, the whole idea of little girls only wanting to be little mothers...and Peter and Tink are just assholes. I checked off a bingo space and a line on a challenge. Best I can say. Maybe it will be good for discussion if kiddo ever reads it?

Kenyazero Truely did not age well! If you quit too soon, you missed the part where the tribe calls little boy Peter the Great White Father. 2y
ravenlee @Kenyazero I finished it, and, yes, that was sickening. I mean, who knew that the really offensive stuff from the Disney movie was either lifted directly from the book or less horrible than what Barrie wrote? Blech. 2y
