The Nest
The Nest: A Novel | Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
A wickedly smart, funny and deeply felt debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of their long depended-upon family inheritanceOn a wintry afternoon in New York City, Melody, Beatrice and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, who has just been released from rehab. Leos bad behavior before entering rehab, culminating in a car crash while under the influencea nineteen-year-old waitress beside himhas left the Plumbs joint trust fundThe Nest, as theyve taken to calling itendangered. All four siblings, at very different places in their lives, believe that this money will solve a host of self-inflicted problems and their consequences. And until Leos accident, theyd been mere months away from receiving it.Can Leo get the Plumbs out of this mess, as hes always been able to do for himself before? Or will the Plumb siblings have to do without the money and the future lives theyve envisioned? As the siblings grapple with family tensions, old histories, and the significant emotional and financial cost of the accident, Sweeney introduces an unforgettable cast of supporting characters: Leos stalwart ex-girlfriend who now thinks that maybe, just maybe, he is capable of change; the waitress whose life was shattered in the accident; the Iraqi war veteran who falls in love with her; and a retired, grieving firefighter with a very big secret.Tender, funny and deftly written, The Nest explores what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of our lives, and the fraught but unbreakable ties we have with our families.

I just don‘t like anyone in this book.

Patchshank I know what you mean. I made it about a third of the way into the book before I gave up. I was just bored with it. 4d
CarolynM I agree, they were all awful. I finished the book, I wanted to know what would happen. I quite enjoyed being interested in the story without caring what good or harm came to any of the characters. 4d

A nice ride of a book. I couldn‘t srop reading, but can‘t say it is a really good book. The characters often feel like names with agendas. That is, Sweeny is great at writing conflict, but less good at personality. And though sometimes you can feel the “first novel” of it all, it is still a good read. I hope her next book is more focused on a smaller group of characters whom she can tailor better.

Lots of first-world problems amongst this dysfunctional family, but I liked this novel! Good writing. More characters than I expected, but the author didn‘t allow this to sprawl.

I can‘t remember the last time I‘ve ever seen my name Valerie or Val in a book, so it‘s odd to see that both this one and the last one I read (Possession by AS Byatt) have minor characters named Val!

How about you all — do you see your name often in books?

tammysue I never do 2mo
wanderinglynn I‘ve seen my name once or twice. Not often. 2mo
TheEllieMo I can‘t recall ever seeing my name in a work of fiction. There‘s an academic whose study is quoted in my current non-fiction book, though, who shares my first name 2mo

Lunch time routine. I‘ve been reading this book for nearly a month. Honestly, it‘s a bit slow. The characters jump around too much. Or maybe I‘m just reading it too slow. Who knows. Either way, I‘m ready to be done with this book. (Yes, that is a baby bump).

They say don‘t judge a book by its cover...but that‘s how I always pick my books. Something about the colors and design on the book, I‘ve wanted to read it for a long time. It did not disappoint. It was a sweet story about the dysfunction among a family, it was hard not to feel emotionally attached by the end.

Good page turner about a family who are corrupted by the promise of a windfall that doesn't come as anticipated. Lots of good characters and life-like dialogue but at points it felt like the author was squeezing in too many stories. The best bits were the explorations of the sibling relationships to which so many of us can relate.

This book was the perfect mix of self-indulgent behaviour and family drama, & all without tying things up in a neat little bow at the end. Yes, some things do end fairly neat, but far from storybook, so I'm pleased. If you want to read about a bunch of dysfunctional adults and generally prickish behaviour, this book is for you!

And my unrelated pic - these mourning doves have made their 'nest' by my front porch. I've named them Harold & Maude ❤

Great picture of how money can corrupt relationships. Almost too similar to The Shell Seekers, but still a pick!

This is my lesson in not judging a book by its cover because I really don‘t like the cover. It makes me think that it‘s a silly frivolous not very well-written book (maybe it‘s the color?). The title doesn‘t help. But when I read it I found myself immersed in an absorbing story about adult siblings with $$ issues who are waiting for a trust fund to be available to them. This has been my jet lag-up-before-6 read as mynahs squabble outside.

I loved the writing style. Sweeney is comfortable/competent switching between POVs & has a talent for descriptive language. But the audio was abrupt in the changes. Overall, it's an ambitious tale: after 1 of 4 siblings gets in a car accident w/ a would-be lover and has to pay her off from the “nest” the others expect to benefit from soon. The rest delves into the lives of each family member as their lives take a turn from what they‘d planned.
