The Nest
The Nest: A Novel | Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
A wickedly smart, funny and deeply felt debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of their long depended-upon family inheritanceOn a wintry afternoon in New York City, Melody, Beatrice and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, who has just been released from rehab. Leos bad behavior before entering rehab, culminating in a car crash while under the influencea nineteen-year-old waitress beside himhas left the Plumbs joint trust fundThe Nest, as theyve taken to calling itendangered. All four siblings, at very different places in their lives, believe that this money will solve a host of self-inflicted problems and their consequences. And until Leos accident, theyd been mere months away from receiving it.Can Leo get the Plumbs out of this mess, as hes always been able to do for himself before? Or will the Plumb siblings have to do without the money and the future lives theyve envisioned? As the siblings grapple with family tensions, old histories, and the significant emotional and financial cost of the accident, Sweeney introduces an unforgettable cast of supporting characters: Leos stalwart ex-girlfriend who now thinks that maybe, just maybe, he is capable of change; the waitress whose life was shattered in the accident; the Iraqi war veteran who falls in love with her; and a retired, grieving firefighter with a very big secret.Tender, funny and deftly written, The Nest explores what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of our lives, and the fraught but unbreakable ties we have with our families.

I have finally made peace with the fact that I‘ll probably be able to read only one book a month. I wouldn‘t call it a slump because I really enjoyed reading Circe.
Instead of going to the library (🥶),I looked through my reserves and found this forgotten gift.

What kind of ending was that??? I loved the beginning of this, plenty of dysfunctional family drama but then there were more characters and more till I got new perspective fatigue and then that ending?!?!? 🤬 so lazy!

Do you remember sending me this book @Cinfhen ? I finally read it and it was great! It‘s about a bunch of fairly well off, dysfunctional siblings, waiting on an inheritance that most of them have a pressing need for due to bad financial and relationship decisions. There are a lot of other more likeable characters in here too which evens things out - almost an assemblage of individuals making decisions that either harm or help others. ⬇️

I wouldn't quite agree (with Scribd) that this is literary fiction, but I still enjoyed it immensely! At one point, the cast of characters became a bit overwhelming, but it all came together beautifully. A fun but meaningful read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐️⭐️ Way late to the game here, and I could not muster a damn for any of these people. The 9/11 relic storyline was intriguing, but that‘s it. That‘s all I‘ve got.

It was just so so for me. I think I‘m a fan of everything working out, but it just didn‘t nail that for me at the end. Yes, some things were for the better, but it didn‘t feel resolved. It wasn‘t a bail and I enjoyed the storytelling style. I also liked how it was all around this concept of the nest and how it effected the lives and futures of the characters, when it‘s intent was to do the opposite. I just didn‘t love the characters.

CarolynM I didn't like the characters either, but I think I enjoyed the story more because of that - I wasn't hoping for a happy ending for any of them. 2y
Cathythoughts I enjoyed the read. It kept me engaged 2y
SarahBookInterrupted @CarolynM and @Cathythoughts I was mixed with this book. It wasn‘t a bail because the story kept me engaged and the storyline was unique. I also like how it all was intertwined. I think I assumed that the characters would grow on me but they never did. 2y

I‘m fairly convinced that for the most part it does no child or adult any good to know they will be the recipient of significant inheritance. Well, this book, finally read, served to further confirm my opinion.

This one didn‘t quite grab me the way I hoped it would. Privileged New Yorkers find their modest family trust in peril, learn to live a little more in reality, but...do they really learn any life lessons? Maybe? Still recommended for the excellence of the writing. It was on my TBR list as one of @bookriot ‘s Best Books of 2016.

So, so good. This book is a perfect example of why you don‘t count your chickens before they hatch. I honestly wish this book was longer and I could have more insight into some of the characters. I really like how some of the story lines tied together in the end. I will say that the majority of the characters were whinny at some point, so I‘m using this for #wineorwhine for #booked2020. This is also my #doublespin. Two birds, one stone!

Cinfhen This book was surprisingly wonderful/ agree, the characters were whiny but they felt real to me!! I‘m interested to see what the author writes next!! 2y

Loved this book from the first very long sentence to the last. This is the story of the Plumb adult siblings who are all in great need of the Nest left by their father available on the 40th birthday of the youngest child. Living in NYC is incredibly expensive and each of the 4 need the money desperately. Some great plot twists, great characters, I already miss them.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book. The Plumb family is flawed and the knowledge of a possible inheritance when the youngest family member turns 40 taints their lives. I was not satisfied with the ending, it left me a bit disappointed. But this book is well written and the character development is impressive.

I just don‘t like anyone in this book.

Patchshank I know what you mean. I made it about a third of the way into the book before I gave up. I was just bored with it. 3y
CarolynM I agree, they were all awful. I finished the book, I wanted to know what would happen. I quite enjoyed being interested in the story without caring what good or harm came to any of the characters. 3y

Our recycling depot has a book hut. I donated a box full of books to make room on my shelves, but couldn‘t help myself and ended up picking up these four lovelies😍
