July and August New Book Picks and a bonus treat for getting a part time job 📚🥰. I somehow managed to pick all nonfiction reads. I'm excited about reading Nell Stevens' memoir because it's partly about my lady Elizabeth Gaskell! My writing spark has been lit again recently and One Year to a Writing Life has me interested. Life has been busy and my reading mojo has been experiencing a draught... sorry I haven't been on much. #bookhaul

We're trying to read a galley about kickass babysitters, but Page is having issues staying comfortable. Hence laying on my eReader. She got stung by a bee this morning, on her eye and ear. She loves chasing them and this time they decided enough...she didn't though, even after being stung she continued to chase them. Aside from itching and swelling she seems fine, but I think she wanted to prove she's a kickass babysitter's sidekick 😎🐶🐝🦸‍♀️.

I sent the above to my sister and said: Romance gets a bad rep because they have sexy covers... but Westerns put it on the BACK. ?

She said I needed to share on book social. P.S. No judgment about either genre, but I find it funny (peculiar) that one and not the other is "allowed" to have sexy covers and receives no backlash (as far as I have ever heard)...while the other not so much.

LitDrivenGirl P.P.S. I'm working on the Western shelf at the shop for the new inventory system. The Western genre is something else... especially old Westerns 🤪. 2mo

I finished my FOURTH #24in48 about 20 minutes ago. My goal was to finish reading 8 books (2 in each format) and I was close. I finished 6 books and my last 2 are each a little over 25% read. I so appreciate the spur to my reading life that has been the last 2 years worth of #24in48Readathon s . Here's to many more and going on another retreat next time! 😘🤩📚😁

Saga Vol. 5 | Brian K. Vaughan

"There's no graduating from this kind of education, couples just keep growing and changing until they either break up or die."

Final challenge for #24in48 is my favorite read from the weekend. I had high hopes for my stack, but ultimately most of my picks were so-so. HOWEVER, Saga Volume 5 (and 4) did not disappoint. I literally had a smile on my face the entire time I read it!

LitDrivenGirl I've read graphic novels for only a few years now and Saga continues to feel like a home. There are characters to love and characters to wish to be more like. There is art and writing that continues revolves in your mind for days after. Begging you to revisit the world and encouraging you to create your own. It was a really bright moment of my weekend to indulge in two more volumes of the series. I don't think I can wait to keep reading ❤. 2mo

Finishing day 1 of #24in48 with a little over 14 hours. I'm disappointed I didn't finish more books, but pleased with my time. Waking up unintentionally at 4 AM may have helped in the beginning, but towards the end of the afternoon I was wasting away. I'm hoping tomorrow to read another volume of Saga because Volume 4 made me want to go to my shelf & devour them all 😍. Also hoping to FINISH more books & not spend my whole day on one or two 😬.

Audiobooks were a difficult sell for me, but thankfully 4 or 5 years ago I got over my preconceived notions. Now they help fill out my reading life. Between odd jobs, life, & more jobs audiobooks are necessary for making the tasks easier & less of a "hey you're robbing me of precious reading time" feels. Multitasking for the win, especially for jobs that require 5 AM wake up & work lifestyle! I can't believe I hung out laundry today #24in48 ?⬇️.

LitDrivenGirl I've been a long time Scribd user, through its many business models. It's in my favorite version right now, all you can eat for 1 monthly fee as long as you don't surpass the undisclosed "read too many" limit (it's a mystery). We live in a wonderful time to get our reading through so many formats & of the á la carte variety. I use Libro.fm, Hoopla, & occasionally purchase from Google Books too. A few favorites I even have on CD ?? #audiobooks 2mo
Molly_the_mezzo I‘ve recently gotten on board for much the same reasons, but what I can‘t reconcile is how much longer it takes than if I were reading it myself. It has NEVER taken me ten hours to read a cozy mystery, lol. 2mo
LitDrivenGirl @Molly_the_mezzo yes and if the narrator isn't great then it seems to DRAG ON AND ON 😅. It helps to adjust the speed on the audiobook though for me. 2mo

Hour 6 Challenge for @24in48 ... the SFF Challenge!
Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson has been one of the most influential series in my reading life. Since discovering them as a teen (& assuring Mum they weren't as sex filled as the covers suggest 😏😅) I have wanted to be a strong, passionate, resilient, kickass woman like Mercy. She goes through much, but ultimately her strength & fierce loyalty are qualities I greatly admire and desire. #24in48

I credit Sarah MacLean (by way of Book Riot) with my giving the romance genre a chance and not being disappointed in the slightest. Years ago when I started reading her books she really helped me to grow comfortable with reading romance, enjoying it, and not being ashamed. This is a huge reason why I echo to friends and customers to read what you want to read.

Sarah is at it again! (Continued in comments)

LitDrivenGirl I liked book one of 'The Bareknuckle Bastards' so much I passed my copy on to a friend and told her to read it and keep passing it on. Hoping I could win over another would be Sarah MacLean fan. Little did I know I could and would like book 2 of the series even more!?!

I don't believe there is anything more refreshing than an honest, looks like me (or so I imagined while reading), heroine who refuses to be put on a pedestal and be saved.(Cont.)
3mo
LitDrivenGirl She's a keeper...or rather the safer *wink*. It is easy to get swept up in a romance novel and forget that beautiful people are falling in love with other beautiful perfect people with minor bumps in their story along the way. Hattie and Beast are no ugly ducklings, but to me they felt more human and less perfect romance and happily ever after. The struggle was frustrating, but that's because it is supposed to be. (Cont.) 3mo
LitDrivenGirl More literal and accessible because it isn't so formulaic. I didn't know before I started reading their story how much I wanted/needed to see a character who looks and feels more like me and who I want to be, on the page.

Thank you to the publisher for a review copy!

It was clear to me after reading Helen Ellis‘ previous collection, American Housewife, she was a writer I wanted to continue following. Her dark humor, charming sarcasm, and laugh out loud wit is entertainment even if she‘s writing about less than favorable topics. The difficulty comes with loving previous work so much you can‘t step away and stop making comparisons.
(More in comments)

LitDrivenGirl Southern Lady Code is a non-fiction essay collection. While her true-life experiences and hilarious takes are still entertaining, it is difficult not to find them average by comparison to her short story collection. I laughed throughout and have a sprinkling of highlighted passages, but I am not walking away as thoroughly engaged and ready to share as before. I don‘t regret reading the collection at all. I am still here for her work. As other reviewers have said, there are essays in here that are great and others I could pass on by.

Two of my favorite essays were the first (Making a Marriage Magically Tidy) and the last (That Kind of Woman). I also think Helen‘s mother would get along well with one of my friend‘s mothers. I would read the book that would come from that meeting.

This is still a collection I find worth reading if you are a fan of her work already. If you are new to Helen‘s writing, I highly recommend reading American Housewife too. Helen Ellis is sure to make you smile, cringe, laugh out loud, and want to smack people with your own ‘Southern Lady Code‘ charm. Do you think she teaches classes?

Thank you to the publishers for a review copy.
