The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Identity | Robert Ludlum
The Bourne Identity is a 1980 spy fiction thriller by Robert Ludlum that tells the story of Jason Bourne, a man with remarkable survival abilities who suffers from retrograde amnesia, and who must seek to discover his true identity. In the process, he must also reason out why several shadowy groups, a professional assassin, and the CIA want him dead. The story takes readers on a suspenseful and action-packed journey into a world of deceptions and conspiracies, offering a compelling psychological portrait of Bourne, and giving them the chance to experience from his point of view the life-or-death decisions he makes as he seeks to piece together the dangerous puzzle of his missing past. It is the first novel of the original Bourne Trilogy, which also includes The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Peter Cannon of Publishers Weekly named The Bourne Identity among the best spy novels of all time, after John le Carr's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.[1] The novel was the basis for the scripts of the 1988 television movie of the same name starring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith, and the 2002 film The Bourne Identity, starring Matt Damon, Franka Potente, and Chris Cooper.

Started off fast and interesting (though at times appallingly sexist), but I got very turned around in Part 3 in terms of well...Bourne's Identity.
I enjoyed Marie once she got to be the super competent diplomatic financial wizard we all knew she could be, but heck if I understand why she bothers with Bourne half the time.
Also, Mr. Ludlum, if you are so uncomfortable with sex scenes, just fade to black. Weird euphemisms are just uncomfortable.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on The Bourne films. The Bourne Identity was the first true "grown-up" book I ever read, and it was a blast. The second and third are pretty good as well, though I find the climax of Ultimatum isn't as explosive as I'd hoped for. But the movies? Nah, they can kick rocks.

📖 I reread at the first of the year. Still like the movie better.
📚 I don't really have an opinion since I seldom read a thriller. Most don't have enough character development for my tastes.
📚 That would be most of the authors that are in that genre. 😂

I‘ve always liked the movies, so I decided to give the book a try. It‘s fun, but not interesting enough to me that I‘d want to continue with the series. I did appreciate the layers of complexity, though there are some insensitivities in it (Bourne speaks “Oriental” 🤦🏼‍♀️) that aren‘t quite explained by the time it was written. Ludlum should have known better, frankly.

PeterJohn I loved this book. I read it long before the movies though. I take my hat off to those authors who wrote before the internet became so prevalent. What we can search with a question to our phones had to be researched in libraries back in the day. 1y

Well, Idk if it's a popular book or not...but I really really hate 'The Bourne Identity'.
It was a bestseller upon its publication, the successful thriller series, is still on going, long after Robert Ludlum 's death. And we all know how Matt Damon 's tearing it up as Jason Bourne.
However.....😧
Believe me I tried to finish this book, lumbered to almost 450 pages, then got scared of more 150 pages of excruciating boredom, and bailed.😧

@Libby1

I wanted to like this book. It was supposed to meet one of my #POPSUGARChallenge prompts, a book that was a bestseller the year I graduated from high school. I tried it in audio and in written format but just couldn‘t make it through the book. I guess I‘ll have to find something else for the prompt.

I started The Bourne Identity a couple of days ago. So I am alternating between audiobook and ebook. It‘s a big book (22+ hours and 719 pages), which I find to be a bit stiff and plodding. I also don‘t care for the narrator, who just doesn‘t seem to be a natural reader or performer (speeding up the audiobook to 1.25 has seemed to help). But I still find it interesting.

tif My default reading speed is x2.0 😁 sometimes I go up to x2.5 if it's an easy to understand narrator 😳 4y
CatLass007 Does satisfy one of my prompts for the #PopSugarChallenge - A book that was a bestseller when I graduated from high school. 4y
CatLass007 @tif i‘m not sure if I could do that speed. I have gone up to 1.5 on occasion. 4y

Booknerd222 I'm glad I'm not alone in going to 2x speed! I've tried 3x if a book allowes it and my head started to spin, but I could still keep up xD 4y
DivaDiane I read this to my husband shortly after the movies came out. I have to say, I feel the movies are much better. They change the story quite a bit, though. It was excruciating reading some of the dialogue aloud. Ugh. 4y
minkyb Back in the day and I do mean way back, I used to read all of Ludlum‘s books. I don‘t know if they would stand the test of time. I have loved the movies. 4y

An hour into The Bourne Identity, and I have decided I dislike the narrator. He‘s very affected, stiff. But this fulfills a requirement for my #POPSUGARChallenge a book that was a bestseller the year I graduated high school. I probably will alternate between audio and ebook since I have checked out both versions from the library. Or maybe I‘ll get some audio crochet done.

Teafiend Totally agree. Sort of like it but can‘t get through. Maybe overwritten? I‘ve been reading it for over a month and I don‘t remember EVER taking that long to read anything! 4y

CatLass007 @Amyg3 It‘s 22+ hours long. Another 21+ hours to go. 😅😅 4y
ErikaB I hate it when I don't like a narrator. I find that even if I make it through the book I don't remember much about it because I didn't realize that I wasn't really listening. 4y
CatLass007 @ErikaB I‘m not really in an audiobook frame of mind, either. I don‘t know what that‘s all about. 4y
ErikaB @CatLass007 I'm having the opposite problem; I barely read any physical books last year, most of my numbers came from audiobooks. I'm lucky enough to be able to listen during part of my work hours. 4y
CatLass007 @ErikaB Oh, I went through a huge reading slump when all I could do was listen to audiobooks, or read graphic novels. But I seem to be over the slump, and now all I want to do is read something I can hold in my hands, preferably “real” books as opposed to ebooks. 4y

This is the 1st installment of the Jason Bourne series, which seems to continue in perpetuity, lol. If you've seen the movie, it's nothing like the book except for Jason & Marie, him losing his memory, & people trying to kill him. There's tons of action, a multi-layered plot, double- and triple-identities, assassins, twists, etc. A fun, thick read requiring focus. #PairWith: a Yorsh: 3/4 glass of Spaten Optimator, 1/4 Absolut Vodka, cool, stir.

becausetrains @Ebooksandcooks been a while since I started drinking too. I don't do it much anymore, maybe a couple drinks a month (meds don't play well) so it has to be something good! 5y
MrBook @britt_brooke 😁👏🏻🙌🏻! @itsbrb I do! Much more 😊👍🏻! @minkyb Lol 😊👍🏻! @Michelle_mck I find her a better character in the book. More kickass 😊👍🏻! @thecomfykitchen 😆👍🏻🙌🏻! @kaysreadinglife I saw the movies first, then read the books. I like the movies (this last one was a little eh), but I like the books more. I'm biased, lol 😁👍🏻! 5y
MrBook @becausetrains @Ebooksandcooks 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! As long as the pairing works. Optimator is really really good all on its own. The thing is, vodka on its own has very little taste (if it is straight vodka and it has significant taste, something's wrong with the vodka. Even Kamchatka, considered the pauper's vodka, has minimal taste), which makes it an ideal mixer if you pretty much just need an extra strong punch. Optimator's already high for... 5y
MrBook @becausetrains @Ebooksandcooks ...a beer. So a beer purist will correctly say no beer should be mixed, but everyone has mixed drinks at some point, lol, as every beverage can stand on its own but has extensive mixed drink varieties. I thought of a couple other beers before settling on Spaten's best only because I've been told some of my pairings are really difficult to find, like the first beers I thought of, but Spaten is fairly common. 5y
becausetrains @MrBook I call BS on Kamchatka not having a strong taste 😳😳 Seriously, have you tried this pairing? 5y
MrBook @becausetrains Lol, I love this back & forth 😁🙌🏻! I haven't had a good discussion on this subject in quite some time. I greatly appreciate you bringing your knowledgeability to the table 😊👍🏻! Yes, I was introduced to the Yorsh at a Russian place in Manhattan, but not with this beer. I don't remember which beer it was, but I liked the pairing. Over time I've tried different beers with different vodkas, and this pairing stands out because.... 5y
MrBook @becausetrains ..., like you, I really like Optimator, and I like Absolut (I'm not too much of a straight vodka person though). I used to help order supplies for a bar (not a very good bartender but I sufficed, lol), and for an Oktoberfest, I did this pairing, and it was successful with patrons. We had a lot of vodka drinkers, and I was lucky enough to try a bunch of types. Kamchatka was our cheapest, and had surprisingly minimal taste to me. 5y
MrBook @becausetrains I can completely understand your response to my pairing though. I was thinking other beers, but they're difficult to find, & some folks have been going in circles with some of my pairings' choices, so I want to make pairings that are more accessible if folks want to try them 😊. It's only a suggestion based on my personal preferences (&, many times, what has met with approval from others in my experience). Thank you for engaging 😎 5y
LeslieO I read tons of Ludlum during the summer while in college. Loved them all but especially the Bourne. 5y
MrBook @LeslieO Ludlum is a favorite of mine as well 😁👏🏻👍🏻! 5y
Procrastireader I discovered Robert Ludlum in high school and hoovered up practically everything he wrote. There are a few subpars, but if you want a well-written thriller, his early stuff is hard to beat. 5y
MrBook @Procrastireader Niiice! I have to laugh uncontrollably for a minutes, hold on ??????. Okay, I'm better now. I saw "hoovered" and thought I saw "hovered" at first. I had to re-read it because it didn't make sense to me at that moment. I like that term ?????! 5y
