Be warned, this one is a little dark but so well written you forget about it. The POV alternates seamlessly between the male protagonist, his daughter, and a few others. I usually don't love when authors weave in a kids POV to an adult story, but the POV of the girl, Polly, ended up being my favorite of all the POVs. Worth a read.

I'll play...
1. I read anything and everything but remember Where the Red Fern Grows particularly fondly.
2 exploring the neighborhood and later the hills near my house with my dog
3 dishes. Still hate dishes.
4 uh, probably my Star Wars action figures
5 Harry Potter. The adventures I would've had if it had been around when I was a kid

Bailedbailed

The first chapter or so started well and the writing wasn't bad but I lost interest fairly quickly. Didn't care about the backstory. Went online to see if I should hang in but the summaries I found told me I wasn't missing anything. So I moved on. Many books to read, and life is shorter than you think.

Does anyone re-read anything special during the holidays? Harry Potter isn't technically a Christmas book, but since the movies always came out for the holidays they feel like it... Anyway, I'm re-reading these.

His writing is like a balm, and his characters are complex and interesting. He knows how to keep you turning pages without relying on the traditional thriller way of using fast paced action. I've binge read 4 of his books and am going to start a fifth soon. Highly recommend!

Finished it, so that was something at least, but didn't love it. There were twists, most coming at the end, but they felt thrown in just so there would be twists, and by the time they were revealed, I just didn't care. The writing felt disjointed at times, and other times better(because of two authors, maybe?). The protagonist's behavior in the first part, before the 1st plot twist, is inconsistent with her actions later on. Overall: meh...

Haven't checked in lately as I've been sick. Good news is I had lots of reading time. But nothing review worthy, just clearing my stack of junk fiction. Except for this last book. Re-reading Salem's lot. 😱👻👺😸

Got a nice rain soundtrack playing outside my window. Looking to find a book to go with the mood. Any ideas?

Jess7 What‘s the mood? Dreary or happy? Lol I‘m always happy to suggest books, but I need more info lol 6y
JewelsEnd The mood of rain. Lol melancholy, guess. Something where the story would be enhanced by the sound of rain. But NO "it was a dark and stormy night." Haha 6y

Thought I'd try a Lisa Gardner. Chose this cause...Well, it was available. Had mixed feelings. While I related to some of it (I like connecting w/the subject matter), the story as a whole didn't do much for me. I get the feeling I didn't choose her best work. Anyone read her? Should I give it another go? The writing wasn't, say, Greg iles, level but it was an easy read & i was able to finish it. more than I can say 4 others I've tried. Suggestions?

ReadingOver50 I like her books. I haven‘t read this particular book, but the ones I‘ve read have been good 6y
JewelsEnd Thanks @ReadingOver50 I checked on goodreads and there were reviews that felt the same as I did about this particular book. I'll try the first in her series and see what I think. 6y

Finally got around to reading this one. I liked it! Some things you could see coming, some you couldn't, but it held my interest until the end.
I will say, the unusual word choices were sometimes distracting, but that's just a nit pick. Most of the time I enjoyed the creativity.

Bailedbailed

I've read this author before and liked his books well enough, but I just couldn't get into this one. Bailed at 350 out of 2100 or so pages. Too many stupid moves by characters and a protagonist who was a nice guy but boring, and a little bit of a sucker. Didn't have much interest to hang around to see if he evolved at all.

Been busy with pre-holiday stuff but managed to read this one based on a recommendation from here. I usually love plot driven stories with good characters. This was character driven with minor plot, but It held enough tension throughout to keep me interested.

Andrew65 I enjoyed this one as an audiobook. 6y
JewelsEnd @Andrew65 hmm. Interesting Did they change voices for each point of view? Happy Christmas, btw 6y

Reading outside my favorite genre again. I occasionally read poetry but I like to read slow and enjoy it. Since I'm short on time lately figured I'd read a book written like poetry.

First, this is not typically my genre. I didn't pick this book; it picked me. I'd never read anything by Gaiman(I hear all you literaries sighing) & thought I'd give him a go.This was the only book in the library not checked out.
I had tried to watch this movie but didn't like it. Too creepy, and I hated the button eyes. Never liked em, probably why I didn't like raggedy Ann either.Anyway, the book was written well enough to get past all of that

Saw the newest movie version this weekend. Don'ta bother. It was mediocre at best. The movie ends the same as the book(no one would dare mess that up), and the film is visually beautiful, but the whole thing fell flat and parts seemed contrived. Not going to give out spoilers, but one of my biggest criticisms is the morality character arc given to the detective. Too unbelievable of a transformation at the end.

Andrew65 Sounds very disappointing. 6y

Dead Men's Dust | Matt Hilton

Read this author on a recommendation from Andrew! Didn't want to leave a review cause I found it somewhere between so-so and pick for me. Didn't dislike it enough to so-so, but I wouldn't pick it, as I don't love reading about deprived sicko antagonists who do too many gross things. I will still try out another from this author tho and maybe then give a review on a diff book. The author writes interestingly enough. Thanks Andrew for suggesting it!

Andrew65 Sorry you didn't enjoy it more 😙, but can see your point of view especially remembering the plot from this one. Like so many other series the first book isn't the best one, so I hope if you try another one you enjoy it more. 6y
JewelsEnd I plan to try the next one in the series. This storyline wasn't for me, but it didn't turn me off of the author! 6y
JewelsEnd Oops. Forgot to tag. @Andrew65 :) 6y
Andrew65 The second book is the first one I read. My review can be found here - it is the long one! I think the character and books have grown on me more since then. http://www.librarything.com/work/8628401/reviews/131447971 I've read 5 books in the series so far. @JewelsEnd 6y

Re-read this favorite of mine written by the son of Alexander Haig. It's the first of a series about army attorney Sean Drummond, a very smart and wise-cracking protagonist. The book is written in first person POV and is a thriller with humor. But thankfully, it's not corny.
