The Name of the Wind
The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One | Patrick Rothfuss
The riveting first-person narrative of a young man who grows to be the most notorious magician his world has ever seen. From his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, to years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime- ridden city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that transports readers into the body and mind of a wizard. It is a high-action novel written with a poet's hand, a powerful coming-of-age story of a magically gifted young man, told through his eyes: to read this book is to be the hero.

Magical Systems. On Goodreads, I found a list of some books with Magical Systems. This is only a couple of them. I haven‘t read these books but I‘ve heard that they‘re good. I‘ve seen that people have been complaining because Patrick Rothfuss hasn‘t finished the #kingkillerchronicle series yet. I‘d like to read the first book but I‘m going to wait for awhile because I‘m already in the middle of a Fantasy series right now that I like.

IvoryLunatic Apart from Harry Potter, The Kingkiller Chronicles are my number one favorite fantasy series. I think he‘s built such a good world and love the characters. But yes. I do wish he would get on with the next book. 4h

This book has been on my TBR for so long, I even have a paperback copy, but have been hesitant to start because it is SO long. I‘ve been looking for another good long audiobook to listen to now that I‘ve finished going through the whole Harry Potter series.

I‘m about 11 chapters in so far (out of 94?!), and really enjoying. The narrator does great voices, and the intro of the story was really enticing. Excited for this audiobook journey!

I was recommended this book by my penpal. And I was hesitant at first but all I heard were good things about it.& it was fantastic. I love the different arcs that are taken throughout. First person for the story and third for the present. I really loved the different vocabulary that was used. I already ordered the second book and right now the third is set to come out next year and I really hope it doesn't get put off again cause that would suck.

kaysworld1 I couldn't get in to it but my friend Joe loves it he's on the second one. 2d

Read 400 pages of this yesterday which I think is a record for me. About a quarter of that at the thermal pools (school holidays!) Who else has thermal pools in their city? These ones are pretty dated but my bones enjoyed the heat 🔥

This is a 5 star fantasy. A fully fledged epic, which stands up to the best of my classic reads but also (thank you lord) depicts gender and class issues thoughtfully. ⬇️

Centique It had me wondering for a while as there were no major female characters in the first half of the book - but when they got there, it was 👍👍 7d

AutumnRLS @Centique yeah, it's one of those infamously unfinished series (Think George RR Martin or Scott Lynch). Rothfuss is a really complex guy. And he's had a lot of personal stuff to contend with since the publication of that first book. He's brilliant. I will wait as long as it takes and then preorder the final book as soon as it's available. ❤ 6d

An interesting tale that starts on an ominous note. Kvothe is telling us his story of survival as he became an orphan and found his way, and left his mark, on the world. Somehow, he became the stuff of legends. For fantasy lovers as there's a major magical quality to this tale.

Genre fiction can be problematic at times. You want it to be familiar (after all, you like the genre for a reason) but not too familiar. The Name of the Wind gets it right. All the familiar tropes are there (orphaned child destined for greatness, magical school, dragons, evil supernatural creatures, an enigmatic love interest) but with enough of a twist to make the whole thing seem fresh. I can't wait to start book 2!

Magicc Great! I have read "City of Bones" and was halfway through "City of Ashes" before I DNFed it. The writing was very dry with no emotions and character development. It felt like a haphazard narrative on demon fighting punctuated by the sassy comments from characters who had only one trait - stubbornness. No match for VE Schwab's amazing writing and plot. But I dearly want to get on with the series. Please tell me it gets heaps eventually!? 2mo

This picture doesn't do the illustration justice at all but man.. every new illustration I see as I turn a new page in this 10th Anniversary edition becomes my favorite. They're all so gorgeous and so well done. But this one of Kvothe playing his lute after a string has broken is definitely one of my top favorites.

I was utterly captivated by this fantasy book: Rothfuss is just such a good storyteller and while you can compare this book to other fantasy tomes (LOTR, HP, Wizard of Earthsea...) it still felt so unique. When a bard joins their traveling troupe, Kvothe begins to learn magic from him (really cool alchemical magic called sympathy which binds things together to create power) and this fuels his desire to join the University the bard studied at.

Bailing on this book a second time! I tried two years ago and couldn't get into it but I hoped it was just the wrong book for me at the time. But I've been reading it for over two weeks, I'm only a third of the way through, I don't care about the characters or the story and I never feel like picking it up. Oh, and it's book one of a trilogy. OH, and the third book may never come out. So I'm calling it quits, and I won't be trying this one again.

DNF #1 Read this they said, its a high fantasy masterpiece...Really?? Its taken me five weeks to get to chapter 12 and this would be the most boring thing I have read in years. There is nothing endearing about any of the characters and it is so underwhelming it can't hold my interest. I really don't understand the hype. SERIOUSLY THOUGH...DOES IT GET BETTER??

I‘m not really sure about this one. I obviously liked it enough to listen to 27 plus hours but I‘m not sure I really liked it. It took a very long time to get into it and had a co-worker not loved it and wanted my opinion I probably would have quit. I have so many questions but I‘m not sure I want to invest another huge chunk of time for the next book to get the answers. 3.5 🌟

I'm a little over 100 pages in and still waiting for the story to start. The thought of 500-plus more just makes me want to Marie-Kondo the thing right off my Kindle. I know this has a lot of love from lots of readers, so I'm going to guess it's just a case of "right book, wrong time" and maybe come back when my head's in a different place. Or maybe when he finishes the trilogy, which should give me plenty of time.

Not looking forward to doing this but here goes. Had this on my Kindle for 2 years, decided to read it due to the involvement of Lin Manuel Miranda in the TV adaptation. And I was hugely disappointed. Apart from the fact that next to nothing happens, the writing is awful - long-winded, inconsistent of tone/style, repetitive (using the same phrase sometimes only lines later), badly edited & just so immature!!! Cont. below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi It was like a teenage boy's wish fulfilment fantasy! Weak, clichè, dull characters (don't start me on the female characters 😡), an excruciatingly tedious & drawn out romance, an unengaging main character who just did not intrigue me in any way & a world that didn't touch my sense of wonder ever. The endless university section goes nowhere except on & on & the forward motion of the narrative is barely perceptible under the endless details. 6mo
readingjedi I can't believe this gets raved about so much! To me it was a classic example of the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome. This is beloved of the god-like LMM? So disappointed/confused - it's not even that I just didn't like it - I thought it totally sucked in nearly every way!!! 6mo

swynn This review was nicely timed, since I just bailed on it after fourteen chapters: your review is exactly what I was feeling coming on. 6mo
Kanarthi Eeeek, I actually really liked the first book. The narrator's voice is so strong and personable, but he's clearly so flawed. I found that tension really fun and I thought that the author was awarely manipulating this tension. The second book disabused me of that notion. Everything is worse about that book, and it's one hundred times as sexist 6mo

This was my only read in January for two reasons:

1. I‘m terrible at reading more than one book at a time.
2. I DIDN‘T WANT IT TO END!

I loved this book! I loved the idea of it, I loved the writing and how it sucked me in, and I especially loved the richness of the characters. The characters in a story and my ability to relate to them really makes or breaks a book for me. This book delivered in that department! #fivestarread
