Wind in the Willows - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham
Wind in the Willows - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham | Kenneth Grahame
147 posts | 245 read | 6 reading | 71 to read
This book forms part of our 'Pook Press' imprint, celebrating the golden age of illustration in children's literature. 'The Wind in the Willows' is a true classic of Children's literature, penned by Kenneth Grahame and first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a traditional bucolic version of the English Thames valley - a novel notable for its adventure, mysticism, morality and unceasing camaraderie. This text contains an introduction by A. A. Milne, the famed author of 'Whinnie the Pooh' and various other Children's poems. It is also accompanied by a series of dazzling colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration, which encompassed the years from 1900 until the start of the first world war, Rackham's artistry still delights both young and old over a century later. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine Grahame's masterful storytelling.

The classic - every time I read it, I realize how much I enjoy it! I wasn‘t crazy about the narrator of this audiobook though, I wish I had purchased another version. My favorite character is Mole, although I do love Toad and his motor cars - “poop poop!” The background above is from the TV adaptation I like the best. I followed along with a free ebook and unfortunately missed the wonderful Ernest H Sheppard illustrations. 4.5⭐️ #2019 🎧🧒🏼

IamIamIam I had a college professor who had us read this. The theme of our class was "The Landscape As Character" and when you think like that, some books really make an excellent use of that!! I just got a leather bound edition of this from Book Con... one of the only good deals we got! ? 2w
rretzler @IamIamIam I can see how the river is certainly a character in this one. What a fascinating class that must have been! Hope your new edition has the Shepherd illustrations. 2w
IamIamIam @rretzler You know, it would have been really fascinating if the professor hadn't sounded like Ben Stein and if it wasn't a MWF 8:30 class my freshman semester. 😂😂😂 I haven't cracked open my new edition yet but I'll keep you posted. I'm debating on reading it aloud to my daughter. Summer has been hard on our reading aloud schedule. 😖😴 2w
See All 6 Comments
rretzler @IamIamIam 🤣🤣🤣 My boys and I used to read together every night. Summers were definitely hard, but when my oldest entered HS, we couldn‘t figure out a reading schedule that worked with his study schedule. I miss reading together with them. Sometimes we read the same books at the same time, which is fun, but not the same. My younger son and I will sometimes listen to audiobooks together while I‘m driving him around (edited) 2w
TheAromaofBooks I love this book so much!! I am especially found of the edition illustrated by Tasha Tudor!! A fellow named William Horwood wrote three sequels, and it's one of the few times I've enjoyed sequels by the not-original author. It just felt like he really captured the essence of Grahame's delightful characters. (edited) 2w
rretzler @TheAromaofBooks I haven‘t seen those illustrations, I‘ll have to check them out. 2w

However, they set out bravely, and took the line that seemed most promising, holding on to each other and pretending with invincible cheerfulness that they recognized an old friend in every fresh tree that grimly and silently greeted them, or saw openings, gaps, or paths with a familiar turn in them, in the monotony of white space and black tree-trunks that #refused to vary. #QuotsyApr19 #refuse

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and illustrated by Patrick Benson, 1994. This is a wonderful animal fantasy story. Within just the first chapter a world was fully fleshed out before my eyes and I could see everything described. The illustrations in this edition add to the delightful tale and the feeling of spring the story naturally brings.

Published in 1994 and illustrated by Patrick Benson, this modern animal fantasy story opens us up to a world of animals who have strong friendship and who push each other to be better. These friends didn‘t always know each other and so this story is a sweet tale of meeting and blossoming into a friendship. The fantasy aspect takes place when we see animals talking and adventuring in the way that they do! Although it makes for a great story!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not sure why I had never read this during childhood but I am catching up now. I love these Edwardian era children's stories set in a blissful English country idyll. Reading this is such a relaxing experience, it is all picnics on the riverbank and suppers around warm firesides.
It is such a warm hug of a book and I especially appreciated reading this beautiful Folio edition illustrated by Charles van Sandwykit.

Lest anyone miss the connection between pockets in your clothes and patriarchy:

“To his horror [Toad] recollected that he had left both coat and waistcoat behind him in his cell, and with them ... all that makes life worth living, all that distinguished the many-pocketed animal, the lord of creation, from the inferior one-pocketed or no-pocketed productions that hop or trip about permissively, unequipped for the real contest.”

Ducks Ditty (by Kenneth Grahame)

All along the backwater,
Through the rushes tall,
Ducks are a-dabbling,
up tails all!

Ducks' tails, drakes' tails,
Yellow feet a-quiver,
Yellow bills all out of sight
Busy in the river!

Spent my Saturday photographing this little guy. It's Ratty, from The Wind in the Willows! Who is actually a water vole, not a rat. I guess water-voley didn't roll off the tongue as a name...

Water voles were in decline for many years in the UK, and they are only gradually recovering, so it was lovely to see some in the wild.
