An Orchestra of Minorities
An Orchestra of Minorities | Chigozie Obioma
A heart-breaking story about a Nigerian poultry farmer who sacrifices everything to win the woman he loves, by Man Booker Finalist and author of The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma. Set on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria and narrated by a chi, or guardian spirit, AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES tells the story of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose soul is ignited when he sees a woman attempting to jump from a highway bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, Chinonso joins her on the roadside and hurls two of his prized chickens into the water below to express the severity of such a fall. The woman, Ndali, is stopped her in her tracks. Bonded by this night on the bridge, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love. But Ndali is from a wealthy family and struggles to imagine a future near a chicken coop. When her family objects to the union because he is uneducated, Chinonso sells most of his possessions to attend a college in Cyprus. But when he arrives he discovers there is no place at the school for him, and that he has been utterly duped by the young Nigerian who has made the arrangements.. Penniless, homeless, and furious at a world which continues to relegate him to the sidelines, Chinonso gets further away from his dream, from Ndali and the farm he called home. Spanning continents, traversing the earth and cosmic spaces, and told by a narrator who has lived for hundreds of years, the novel is a contemporary twist of Homer's Odyssey. Written in the mythic style of the Igbo literary tradition, Chigozie Obioma weaves a heart-wrenching epic about destiny and determination..

While some authors write books, the truly gifted tell stories. Chigozie Obioma is one of those rare storytellers. Using African myth and beloved proverbs, Obioma crafts a spectacular tale of destiny and fulfillment. It‘s an epic quest that will leave you spent and aching, Although it was a bit too long, this book was still stellar and a 4 star read. Second book completed for #BFC Day4

Cinfhen This book is too “big” for me to describe properly @KateFulfordAuthor @rohit-sawant but I‘m in awe of what Obioma created. Definitely read this one, especially if you enjoyed The Fisherman. There‘s some hints of his debut in these pages 2w
KarenUK I loved Obioma‘s debut, both in print and on audio as a re-read for a bookclub. I think I‘ll try this one on audio because it has the same Nigerian narrator as the Fisherman, and his voice is soooooo beautiful! 💕🎧 2w
Cinfhen I think this will be fantastic on #audio @KarenUK let me know 💕 2w

#StarTrekSummerMay Sometimes #TheEnemy is only yourself. This book is so good. I‘m loving the Nigerian folklore and the proverbs scattered throughout the pages. Chinonso is a simple man, with a big heart and pleasing nature. Through a series of unexpected events his life becomes a story of calamity. Equal parts hilarity and heartbreak. I‘m halfway in and totally hooked.

Cinfhen Thanks for gifting me this ARC @LibrarianRyan I think it‘s my favorite so far!!!!!! 2w

I loved The Fishermen for the writing and how it revealed a slice of life in Africa. While this book does the same, it frustrated the heck out of me. I wanted to strangle the main character for his foibles and being so easily led. It descended into ridiculousness to such a degree that it really marred the book.

Cinfhen Oh no!!! #SophmoreSlide 2mo

Stunning. Breathtaking. Developed characters. Destiny, fate, a man overwhelmed by fate, hope and desire. A rocky, treacherous, and unforgiving journey.

Insights and penetrating insights abound.

A great read - I'm sending out 8 copies. This book is in my top 6 and I will reread it annually.

This book was beautifully written. The prose were artful. The story itself did not hook me? But the way it was done kept me reading.

Finishing this was the best start to #24b4monday ! I can‘t recommend this highly enough. A sweeping Nigerian tragic love story narrated by one of the lovers‘ traditional guardian spirit (afraid I can‘t spell the actual word - audio downsides). Astonishingly original, deeply felt.

This kind of novel gives me faith in publishing in 2019, like YES, THIS is the kind of novel we should be publishing, reading, promoting, discussing. #blackhistorymonth

Listening on my commute again. I‘ve got a terrible cold and don‘t want to be awake right now. Not a great day 😐

This is an incredible book. It‘s been slow to read because I haven‘t had much time for audiobooks but this is so original and heartfelt, absolutely beautifully written I recommend it very highly. I haven‘t felt this affected by a love story since call me by your name.

Kalalalatja I loved his first book, and I can‘t wait to read this! 3mo

Bailedbailed

I don‘t know that this is a fair critique of the book, but I did not love the voice. Enlisting a guardian spirit as a narrator is an idea that I find very cool, but I found that the narrator was too far removed from the decisions that drive plot forward. That said, I think that this book will really work for a lot of readers. I bailed after 50 pages, but I‘d be curious to read reviews from people who make it to the end.

A painful, lyrical, slow motion tragedy. The rich emotional depth of Obioma‘s writing is made all the more poignant by the reader‘s powerlessness to stop the disaster you know is coming, like being in a dream where you are driving a car with no steering wheel. It‘s probably not for everyone, a very “literary” work, but I found it hard to put down. Thanks to Libro.fm for the complimentary audiobook listening copy.

A modern take on the Odyssey, Obioma sets us in Nigeria with the chi, or guardian spirit, of a poultry farmer. After a tense encounter on a bridge, the farmer falls in love with a woman and this sets him off on a journey. It's about changing ourselves for love, and losing control of that love. On a meta scale it's about how Africans are treated when they leave Africa, and the western/white influence on African culture, and then some!

WhatDeeReads I saw you were still gathering your thoughts on this one. 4mo

A literary feast fo readers of lyrical prose. Combining Nigerian folklore and Greek mythology, especially The Iliad, the novel explores an everyman whose difficult circumstances are further complicated by the divine forces.

Hey @Cinfhen just wanted to let you know I ordered all your #40in2019 book prizes. They will be coming sporadically for the next few months. There is a letter on its way as well but it may get there after the first shipment of books.

Also while I am not goiNg to tell you the books I ordered 😈 I will tell you to NOT buy the book in the picture. It‘s on your list and I have a galley so I‘m sending it in the box to your moms house. 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan The first two books as my picks do they may or may not be surprising but the last ones are all from your list. 😎😎. 5mo
