From the author of The Darkest Corners and Little Monsters comes an all-new edge-of-your-seat thriller set in upstate New York about an eerie sequence of seemingly unrelated events that leaves five cheerleaders dead. There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook. First there was the car accident--two girls dead after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know his reasons. Monica's sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they'd lost. That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it's not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica's world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad's desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn't over. Some people in town know more than they're saying. And somehow, Monica is at the center of it all. There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn't mean anyone else is safe. Praise for Little Monsters: "A disturbing portrait of how bad news and gossip can curdle when mixed together." --Oprah.com "A twisted story of obsession and manipulation." --Chelsea Sedoti, author of The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett Praise for The Darkest Corners: "You'll be up all night tearing through the pages." --Bustle.com "Gripping from start to finish . . . with twists that left me shocked." --Victoria Aveyard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Red Queen

I quite enjoyed this. A nice little mystery in a high school setting with multiple strands weaving throughout the story. A good, tense and satisfying ending.

I was planning to rate this YA murder mystery a “so-so“ but it grew on me. I went in thinking it was going to be kind-of campy & fun (maybe it was the cover?) but it was actually very somber & emotionally-complex. Also, triggers galore. The prose isn't anything to write home about but the characters & plot are compelling enough. The slowly-revealed relationship between Jen & her secret suitor is so tender, young, & heartbreaking.

*cont'd below

monalyisha 1/2: I have some nitpicky qualms (use of the word “bitch“; distrust of a step-father figure who bears an eerie resemblance to my own (unshakable, upstanding, goodest of all good guys & a police officer, to boot); & the protagonist doesn't get any stellar last lines in the final chapter from her POV. But the biggest issue I had was resolved in an unexpected way. I thought I knew whodunnit but I was wrong! (edited) 1mo
monalyisha 2/2: I can recommend this one, as long as you're not looking for poetic or lyrical prose. Nothing about the feelings or the kind of abuse that takes place is simple or easy, & that feels real (& sickening). Despite the tough subject matter, I looked forward to my daily commute so I could find out more about what happened. (edited) 1mo
LibrarianRyan I 100% agree with you review. I felt much of the same way. 1mo

monalyisha @LibrarianRyan Interestingly, I‘m going through reviews now & I keep reading that people thought the characters were flat. I didn‘t really feel that way. Also, I just attended a really thought-provoking talk about the difficulty of representing depression in a real way when books need driving action. If an MC is suffering from depression, forward motion & dimension aren‘t really on the table. Maybe that was part of what people were feeling. (edited) 1mo
LibrarianRyan @monalyisha I think for me it was talking it over with a group of kids. Originally I was meh, but the more I talked it over with teens that age, the more “real” they made it. Made the characters not so flat. The very very very end, I had figured out. The rest was a bit of a surprise. For me the biggest turn off was that it was not what I was expecting. I was expecting “scream” meets teenagers. And I got we were liars instead. 1mo
monalyisha @LibrarianRyan Yeah, I definitely think it should‘ve been marketed a little differently. 1mo
YergiBear I enjoyed it, but will agree it wasn‘t quite what I had been expecting. I love the cover but I am not sure it quite fits. 4w

I really liked this book a lot. I hate giving in depth reviews because I don't want to ruin it for anyone so what I will say is this. I can totally relate to the narrator, and the desperation she feels. Which is probably why I liked it so much.

LibrarianRyan Some of these that I have read are right on. But The Cheerleaders for Bring it on! No. Yeah. Cheerleaders is about the only connection. The book is a high drama with mystery and a bit sad. Bring it in is a redemption story and one about friend and girl power. Not a good match. 4mo

2019 Book 5: Hmm. Interesting. This book‘s element of mystery made for a good read. Lots of death and things going on throughout the story. My biggest complaint is the amount of over-dramatization from the main character. How many times can the blood drain down to your toes? A bit much. The author wrote a good story but made the teenage characters too dramatic. However a good mystery. 3.5/5 ⭐️

I‘m mad at the MC of my #monthofboyne read, so I put it down to read about murdered cheerleaders. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Unfortunately, the book was pretty formulaic and, while there were surprises, there wasn‘t anything that made me put the book down to say “what just happened??”
I‘m still not ready to pick “The Heart‘s Invisible Furies” back up quite yet, so I think I‘ll check another library loan off the list...

Overall, it was a good read. I‘m sure it would‘ve been a quick read too if life hadn‘t gotten in the way. Most of it was written in present tense which I don‘t feel like I see often. It was interesting unraveling the mystery of what‘d happened. Not sure I loved how the ending was laid out, but overall it was entertaining and held my attention.

monalyisha @LibrarianRyan I knew Ginny‘s dad was involved but for most of it (til we got more clues), I thought it was going to relate directly to the murders. I thought maybe he was a dealer. I also thought Tom‘s partner was going to have a part in it but he was just a red herring. I guessed maybe he‘d been the one to shoot the neighbor dude & that Tom was covering for him since he was a rookie & it would‘ve had more serious repercussions for his career. 1mo

As a cheerleader in high school and college, this book immediately called out to me. Although you definitely don't want to be a cheerleader in this story. It's the perfect amount of mystery mixed with high school drama. Surprisingly, the characters didn't annoy me (which is increasingly difficult to find in YA for me lately.) There are a lot of coincidences and a few questions that the author tries to make more of than necessary, but a fun read!

vkois88 I thought I had this one on my TBR, but apparently not... fixed that! #Stacked 8mo

MEH. I almost bailed on this one but I did want to find out what happened, so I guess it had that going for it. But overall this was not a great book. The premise was so fascinating and the execution just fell totally flat. Not super well-written, cookie-cutter characters, a convoluted plot that never fully coalesced. The ending was kinda predictable, too. Too bad! 3/10 ⭐️

So far this is kind of eh. Maybe because I don‘t really understand why the protagonist is embarking on this quest suddenly after 5 years have gone by, maybe because the writing isn‘t amazing, maybe because there seem to be too many coincidences/plot conveniences I just don‘t buy...
