Pursuit of Love
Pursuit of Love | Nancy Mitford
Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love is one of the funniest, sharpest novels about love and growing up ever written. 'Obsessed with sex!' said Jassy, 'there's nobody so obsessed as you, Linda. Why if I so much as look at a picture you say I'm a pygmalionist.' In the end we got more information out of a book called Ducks and Duck Breeding. 'Ducks can only copulate, ' said Linda, after studying this for a while, 'in running water. Good luck to them.' Oh, the tedium of waiting to grow up! Longing for love, obsessed with weddings and sex, Linda and her sisters and cousin Fanny are on the lookout for the perfect lover. But finding Mr Right is much harder than any of the sisters had thought. Linda must suffer marriage first to a stuffy Tory MP and then to a handsome and humourless communist, before finding real love in war-torn Paris. . . 'Utter, utter bliss' Daily Mail Nancy Mitford was the eldest of the infamous Mitford sisters, known for her membership in 'The Bright Young Things' clique of the 1920s and an intimate of Evelyn Waugh; she produced witty, satirical novels with a cast of characters taken directly from the aristocratic social scene of which she was a part. Her novels, Wigs on the Green, Love in a Cold Climate, The Blessing and Don't Tell Alfred, are available in single paperback editions from Penguin or as part of The Penguin Complete Novels of Nancy Mitford which also includes Highland Fling, Christmas Pudding and Pigeon Pie. This edition of The Pursuit of Love is introduced by novelist Zoe Heller.

No end of awesome covers for this unsung classic about Linda aka "the Bolter" who is too busy #livingforlove to worry about being a mother. Always fun to have some insight (albeit fictional) into the world of the Mitfords!

It made me laugh at the end when Linda ends up with Fabrice, and I could see that some French stereotypes haven‘t changed... but otherwise, I didn‘t find the book all that alluring: it was slow-paced for me! Anyways, it‘s not bad, but it‘s not my favorite either...

The title of book says it all, or as the blurb says: “Oh, the tidium of waiting to grow up! Longing for love, obsessed with weddings and sex, Linda and her sisters and cousin Fanny are on the lookout for the perfect lover. But finding Mr. Right is much harder than any of the sisters had thought.”

And for the reader, to follow this process is quite fun and a look into the pre-WW2 period.

And the cover. Can we just take a minute to gaze at it?

erzascarletbookgasm Gorgeous cover! 😍 8mo

#bookhaul #2 from today from Daunts
3 from my #TBR for #pop19

I love this 🐧 edition of the tagged book with the Lourdes Sanchez cover design. So pretty.

I‘ve been wanting to read this McEwan for ages (and this Vintage edition has a blurb from John Boyne on the cover!) They had every one of McEwan‘s novels in these editions, which are really lovely.

And I‘m so looking forward to ‘The Summer Book‘ as I 💙 Jansson‘s Moomin books as a kid.

My Uncle Matthew had four magnificent bloodhounds, with which he used to hunt his children...It was great fun...This caused the most tremendous stir locally, the Kentish week-enders on their way to church were appalled by the sight of four great hounds in full cry after two little girls.

Slump over!!! I know the solution now to cure a reading lull- find a book with wickedly amusing writing! This is my first time reading Nancy Mitford and I‘m over the moon and only at page 22! I find her backstory so fascinating and now that I have a taste of her writing, I am hooked! The mix of biting humor and allusions to darker complexity is sucking me in. I am now excited for a weekend of solid reading!

Weaponxgirl Oh she is wonderful! 11mo

If anyone #needsmorelove then I have two books with love in the title. Nancy Mitford is so funny and a bit mean when she's writing about the upper classes. One of the famous Mitford Sisters, Nancy is right at home detailing escapades of characters based on her own family. #anditsaugust

Told through the eyes of her cousin Fanny, Linda embarks on a search for love. She seems to have no thought whatsoever for anybody's feelings except her own, falling in love at first sight and abandoning her daughter because she thinks her boring. No one criticizes her, which bewildered me a little.
I read somewhere that her character is based on Nancy Mitford herself, which does explain it, but doesn't make me sympathize. #1001books

I've wanted to read a novel written by Nancy Mitford ever since I was blown away by a biography of the Mitford sisters (tagged in comments). What a fascinating and eccentric family! This is a thinly veiled fictional account of that family. The style of writing is beautiful but I'm starting to think satire is just not my thing. Still it is good and a pick. 👍

Dragon I liked her other book but it's satire too. 3y
batsy Loved this and the one @Dragon mentioned too. 3y

Wonderful and witty this novel would be the perfect cosy read if it were not for the underlying melancholy. That is not to say that it isn't thoroughly enjoyable, but you may not leave this novel with the lighthearted flourish that you would pride and prejudice. Nevertheless, the novel's narrator, Fanny, is sharp and engrossing offering a casual fluency to the story making it easy to forget that Fanny is merely an illusion crafted by Mitford.
