pickPost-apocalyptic monsters? Disaffected monster Hunter? Mysterious strangers? A tapestry of Navaho tradition & folklore? Well, sign me up. Excellently written, fast-paced, mystery to really dig your teeth into. Funny and scary and all around delightful. Highly recommend.

This fiction adventure puts some spinning Navajo concepts in to a world where only the Diné have survived. Excellent author, excellent read. (Check out her children‘s series, too!)

so-soI really liked a lot of things about this book—the world especially, a realistic-feeling apocalypse with Diné (Navajo) magic and creatures. The characters were also a lot of fun, but they felt shallow, and some of the events seemed like they took place only to cram in YA tropes. That wouldn‘t have bothered me except that Maggie didn‘t feel like a YA character to me. The ending didn‘t work for me—a lot of crucial points were only implied.
Just got home from being out of town for a bit and this was waiting for me. Thanks @AFrostCauseReads ! Can‘t wait!

pickMy last audiobook of March! I‘ve had this one in my audible library for so long. A fairly dark, gritty dystopian fantasy that somehow also manages to be lots of fun, very clever, and even a little sexy. Great writing, excellent world building, and fascinating characters. It‘s also that elusive YA-labeled book that did not make me roll my eyes at all. 🙌🏼
Good audio narration, and I‘m definitely continuing the series.

pickI finished on Friday and have been too busy to review! A good post-apocalyptic urban fantasy, set in a world in which Navajo gods and monsters meddle in the lives of mortals. It was a little more grim and violent than I expected, but good. I got hints of Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson, in a good way. And now I have my first #BookSpinBingo of the month!
Mid- #DashingDecember update: I read Dionysus and Well Matched, am about halfway through my section of Tehran, and am about halfway through the tagged.
Crazy week for kiddo (and mom!) - she had recital on Saturday, swim class on Monday, speech evaluation and ballet class yesterday, and violin lesson and first COVID shot today (plus mandatory ice cream treat). So any reading done is kind of amazing. Hopefully more time soon. 🤞🏻
A Day my family has chosen to celebrate for 20 years is finally official. In honor of this we will be donating to Re-Member a non profit that supports The Pine Ridge Reservation. pickThis is a very different kind of urban fantasy book and I'm here for it. The world, mythology, characters were all amazingly written and it was easy to get immersed into the book
My only complaint is that sometimes it felt like half a book. There could easily have been 100 more pages but it does make me excited to read the second in the series

I‘m all about urban fantasy + ALL the supernatural creatures / magic. Pictured some of my favorite tv shows, movies + book series. I don‘t mind if my supernatural leans in to dark/horror/blood/gore but no scary horror movies for me. I also like gothic romance + cozy mystery.

pickI'm not big on urban fantasy and I pretty much stay away from dystopian/post apocalyptic anything really, but I've enjoyed other stories by Rebecca Roanhorse, so thought I'd read this. Wow! This book was so fast-paced and had incredible characters. I just absolutely loved it. After reading 2 short stories and 2 books of hers, Rebecca Roanhorse is now on my favorite authors list. Looking forward to reading the second book.

Update on my #20in4 progress: I read for a total of four hours yesterday. I slept in a bit this morning and had errands to run today, so I've only gotten 1 1/2 hours in today. I'm going on a sunset/moonrise hike with a few friends in a little bit, but I have about an hour to kill before getting ready, so I'm going to read more. One of my errands was picking up these two books I had on hold at the library.
so-soBook was good but not great. It kept me reading. Maggie is a great female warrior for this futuristic dystopian Navajoland. Ending seemed a little unresolved to me. I'd still recommend it though.
Good thing I also have this one on audio 😅

pick7/100, 5 ⭐ I loved this book and I am downloading the sequel as I write this. I don't even know what to say, it left me with such a deep feeling in my gut. The characters were very well written and the world was fascinating. Twists I saw coming and twists I didn't. Going to keep this short so I can start book two: Storm of Locusts now.
so-soThis actually lays between Pick and So-So. I liked this book. Liked the characters, I just wanted more. But the ending does make me look forward to book 2!
pickThis is a fun urban fantasy romp! I love the atmosphere, the characters, and the folklore. While I had some issues with the pacing, I do prefer my action-focused books to be more fast-paced, so it doesn‘t really bother me that much. pickExcellent read! Interesting world, good characters, and a really slowly built exploration of the main characters background and why she‘s broken, which is a nice change. Maggie is essentially a deadly super hero and must work with someone who is very much her opposite to stop people eating monsters and contest with crafty immortals in a new world shaped by magic and disaster. 4.5/5 stars; read if you enjoy Kate Daniels and female killer heroines.

so-soI am wavering between a pick and so-so. I found it good in parts, but Maggie could be very annoying. My hope would be that she had enough growth in this book to make the next book better, but I'm not sure I will read that. As always with post-apocalyptic fiction I wonder how society is supposed to work. Where's the gas coming from, food, clothes? To trade goods is one thing, but who is producing it? I found that more unrealistic than the gods.

This is a lively and exciting story that unfolds in a world steeped in the atmosphere of native American myths.

pickI was very uncertain about this book at the start after a particular beheading but I kept going because it met a prompt for two of my challenges and I‘m so glad I did. I loved the mythology and Maggie is just a cool, badass character. A very well written book. Book 2/3 of my self imposed challenge

pickI‘ve always enjoyed the gods-walk-among-us trope, and while I still read and love the Rick Riordan books, it‘s nice to read an adult version of the trope. There was a lot going on in this book. It‘s a fantasy as I mentioned. It‘s also a post-apocalypse novel. And there is a little bit of a romance element. I really enjoyed it all. I liked both main characters, and I loved learning about Navajo myths.
