From the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn comes the first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic. A god will return When the earth and sky converge Under the black sun In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a mans mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain. Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade.

I enjoyed every single page of Black Sun! The plot and character development was incredible. I usually don‘t like books that jump between characters narrations but the way this book was written allowed me to be invested in each character wholeheartedly— cheering all of them on to success.
Great piece of fiction. Highly recommend this book!

4.5⭐️ Wow. I loved the world building, I loved the characters, I loved almost everything. Took a little while for me to get invested but once I understood what was going on, I was hooked. This book is a lot of set up for events to come, but oh man am I excited to continue on and find out what happens to Serapio.

Outstanding! Roanhorse builds the most amazing world inspired by pre-Columbian America; the story grabs you from the 1st page. The writing is beautiful & descriptive, and the indigenous and LGBTQ+ representation is subtle yet underlies every page. Filled with powerful, complicated characters that you can‘t help but root for, this book changed what I expect from fantasy & I can‘t wait to read the next in the series. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Ehhh… I was really excited about this and I DID finish it, if I really don‘t like a book I just don‘t finish. I think I had really hoped to love it more, i‘d heard amazing reviews and I had really enjoyed the authors Star Wars books. I wonder if for once I may have enjoyed print rather than audio? Who knows! So that‘s unhelpful overall but maybe give this a try 🤷🏼‍♀️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I finished 3 of my #newyearwhodis books and loved them all. Black Sun and Piranesi were both 5 star reads for me.

I'm currently reading The Witch's Heart and should finish that in February. And I'd definitely like to read a few others from the throughout the year.

Thanks to @Johanna414 for the fantastic list and @monalyisha for organizing! @nywd22

Absolutely amazing! I stopped reading half way through because I didn't want to finish the book too quickly.

The world building is unique and instantly drew me in. The POV switches gave more insight into the characters and the different factions they were involved in. It's a breath of fresh air in a very saturated and tropey genre

I wrote about my favourite reads of 2021 (not necessarily published last year) on Casey the Canadian Lesbrarian! The ol' blog has been pretty neglected these days. (The last post I did before this one was ... a list of my favourite books I read in 2020). The books are almost all queer and mostly Canadian or Indigenous.

My first 5 star read of the year! I absolutely loved this Central American inspired epic fantasy full of gods and adventure. I am glad I only read it four months before the sequel comes out because the ending left me absolutely shocked. I cannot wait to pick up the sequel as well.

Thanks @Johanna414 for the #newyearwhodis list. I absolutely loved my first read off your list. @monalyisha #nywd22

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. The world building is amazing and the characters are so much fun. It was super fun reading from several characters' perspectives and anticipating their paths colliding cataclysmically! Who do you root for when one of your POV characters is out to kill another? It was also great having an a-spec protagonist, bipoc mcs, an Indigenous cultural setting, and background non-binary and trans characters.

PuddleJumper I've read some of her Sixth World series which I enjoyed, didn't know she had another series. Going to see if my library has this as that sounds fun 7mo

I'm basing my second #SundayFunday answer on what @ozma.of.oz said about her own book group
1. I read too slow and have a unique taste in books
2. I'd say books that are warm, or books that challenge people and thus make them uncomfortable! The tagged might be fun if they like fantasy & you don't mind making them a little uncomfortable
3. I wouldn't want full approval, but debate might not be productive. How about discussion and engagement?

Clare-Dragonfly I love your answer to #3! 7mo
ozma.of.oz 3 is very good! Although, the most fun I can recall having at my book club is a pick where everybody universally hated the book and we spent 3 and a half hours just laughing at this book. 😂 Thanks for sharing! 7mo

This book was excellent. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I was impressed with everything about it from the world building to the characters to the plot. The author wrote about non binary characters and disabled people with agency and based her book off of pre-Columbian Indigenous civilizations. I think most people who like fantasy will enjoy this one. It has mermaids and witches and magic.

🎧 overhyped, disappointed.

I have Trail of Lightening & Storm of Locusts. Also hyped. I haven‘t read them yet & now I may have to check the summaries before wasting my time.

On to this book.

You might be the audience for this book & I might be the only one who thinks this … a couple things kicked 2 stars off my rating.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy 1. The book ends in what feels like mid-thought. Guess there will be a sequel.
2. Internal monologue was painfully eye-roll worthy. It happens so often & felt so YA that I nearly DNF‘d it.
3. I understood the premise but the characters actions are not only YA but adult & ancient times that felt current.

The writing was at times lyrical. The world building was nice. I just didn‘t like the characters & sadly won‘t be reading the next installment.
11mo
TieDyeDude This was strongest on the pirate ship, IMO. I forget if it was announced as a trilogy or larger series, but definitely not very strong as a stand alone. I gave up on The Bone Season for the same reason. I may revisit once the series is complete... 11mo
Twainy @TieDyeDude is it obvious that when I feel let down … minus one whole star. I wanted to love this. Not loving it makes me question if I need to buy the book on sale or used & try it again … it feels universally loved. 11mo
TieDyeDude I think it is a mix of people being nervous to criticize the work of a celebrated BIPOC, and general praised heaped on epic, world building fantasy. I think she was trying too hard to create a complex, marketable brand to entice a TV or movie studio. The small, interpersonal moments on the pirate ship are so much more memorable than the politics and warring factions. That being said, haven't read Storm of Locusts, but Trail was very good. 11mo
Twainy @TieDyeDude this gives me hope as I own those 2 other books 😁 11mo

This has been in my NetGalley queue forever. I bought the hardcover when it came out and now the audio. This is probably a book that works better in print as there are a LOT of characters to try to keep straight, and time jumps as well. As expected with a first-in-a-series, there‘s a lot of world building, but it‘s woven through organically without info-dumps. I‘m not sure I care enough to continue the series, but that‘s not the book‘s fault.

I cannot say that I loved this book but I really liked it. Excellent fantasy drawn from ancient myths from the Americas. The map is there but still the progression through this land is not as colorful as I would have liked. The characters have their stories and those do flow. Book one in what is to be a trilogy...I think the second and third books may bring the following! I do love this cover!

I finished this as an audiobook yesterday. I enjoyed it overall. However, it ended in what felt like the middle of a scene, which I hate! I k ew it was a first book and there will be more after, though not sure how many. But I haven't read a book that abruptly ends like this seemed to. Oh well. It was still good overall. I've been hearing a lot about it recently.
