What a charming book! This retelling of Gerald Durrell‘s childhood growing up on the Greek island of Corfu is tender yet humorous, chronicling his adventures with his somewhat odd family along with his obsession with the Corfu wildlife. The reasons for the family‘s two house moves in Corfu made me laugh out loud whilst the ‘magenpies‘ had me highly entertained. A really enjoyable read with a touch of innocence ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read this book many moons ago as a prescribed book in highschool. A couple of years ago my dad bought a copy at our church "bazaar" and naturally it ended on the #TBRShelve and now its time finally came...only to find that this copy was in fact also a highschool prescribed copy (not my one though). The entire book has notes and scribbles and explanations in Afrikaans and I absolutely love it and I wonder...why was it not handed back? ?????

C.Perone I may still have one or two books from school 🤫😎 3mo
Samplergal I had a copy of To kill a Mockingbird from the school library for two years. My mom “caught” my long loan and made me return it. Sad day that was. That might be an explanation here. Btw, I loved that book. 3mo

A story of Gerald Durrell when he was 10 years old, and his family‘s four-year migration from England to Corfu in the 1930s. There he developed his passion for wildlife, local flora and fauna, and animals play an important part in the tale. Still on my #tbr.

When the Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. It is a delightful account of Durrell‘s family‘s experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home. #family #fallintoreading

I've known who Gerald Durrell was from being a small child - my mother was a fan of his work. And as a Grecophile myself that I haven't read this before is remarkable. It is a treat indeed. The writing is wonderful: evocative, lyrical, dream-like. Gerry's love for the island of Corfu and its wildlife shines like a beacon. It speaks of a rare & magical childhood. The characters and animals are vividly drawn and thoroughly memorable every one. ⬇️⬇️

What a charming book detailing the early life of animal-loving Gerald Durrell. I'll say this - he had a very patient mother! She allowed young Gerry to keep any creature that he came home with, often to the dismay of the older children. Many laugh out loud moments. I am going to check out "The Durrells in Corfu" on PBS.
This was my pick for my free Amazon Prime book this month. If you haven't picked yours yet, I suggest this title.

This episodic tale of the Durrell family's (mis)adventures in 1930s Corfu is a delight. The cast of eccentric, bickering ultimately loveable characters bounds from one disaster to another punctuated and often caused by the animals collected by 10 year old budding naturalist Gerry. Silly, amusing, charming, the perfect book to ward away the January blues. I might have to give ITV's recent television adaptation a go...

Oryx It's lovely, isn't it? Made me smile throughout 1y

emily_m_tubb I love the books... but I couldn't get on with itv's series- it's fine if you don't mind the inaccuracies of the animals they are talking about... A bearded dragon on Corfu?! 😂 It's probably just me being an animal nerd! 🤣 1y
Moray_Reads @emily_m_tubb I probably wouldn't pick up on most of them but a bearded dragon seems a bit outlandish even to me! And there are so many species already in the book(s), why add impossible ones?? 1y
