The entire idea of what constitutes a classic is subjective. Above are authors, plays, and novels that I‘ve read; some I liked more than others.

What do you think makes a book classic?

Tamra You have 4 of my very favorites listed! 😊 (edited) 3h
Tamra For me it is a book with timeless themes and the writing so good you can read it multiple times and is still a rich experience. One of several for me is A Scarlet Letter. 3h
Cinfhen I like your definition @Tamra and I enjoyed a Scarlet Letter too. I think a classic is a book that can withstand the test of time (20 + years) and still feel relevant. I recently read and thought this book would fit the category 1h

Nicholas Nickelby | Charles Dickens

Day 18 of #GratefulReads is #BeenOnYourTBRTooLong and now is when I reveal my literary dark secret! I‘ve been reading Nicholas Nickelby for YEARS! It started okay but I got bogged down in parts and then I just stalled on it. Dickens is not my idea of fun times. 🤦🏻‍♀️

OriginalCyn620 Ha! Totally understand that! 6h

Crime and Punishment | Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Day 19 - #ClassicYouEnjoyed #GratefulReads #CrimeandPunishment #FyodorDostoyevsky

A must read classic! Masterpiece! Riveting!

Murder story, told from a murder‘s point of view, that implicates even the most innocent reader in its enormities. It is a cat-and-mouse game between a tormented young killer and a cheerfully implacable detective. It is a preternaturally acute investigation of the forces that impel a man toward sin, suffering, and grace.

OriginalCyn620 I have not read this classic yet! 7h
EadieB @OriginalCyn620 You should check it out! Very interesting read! 6h

Gravity's Rainbow | Thomas Pynchon

I picked this book up from my local library in 1996 when I was still in high school. I only read a few chapters then and always told myself I'd get back to it and finish it because those few chapters have stuck with me all these years.

My husband bought it for me last Christmas and I still haven't read it. I think I'll make it my first read in December this year. 😁

The Glass Bead Game | Hermann Hesse, Magister Ludi

This book debuted on my TBR in 2008 on my spouse's recommendation. It still sounds awesome, but for some reason, I've not managed to pick it up yet.

I've been seeing the #GratefulReads posts but it only registered this morning that they were part of a challenge. Sometimes it takes me a while, but I'm jumping in now on Day 18!

Billypar It's good! I liked Steppenwolf slightly more, but it's an interesting world Hesse creates around this game. 5h

I started this book months ago and really love it so far, but every time I try to go back to it I get distracted by other things I'm reading! So it has definitely been on my TBR list for longer than I would like! 😁💕📚
