A Murder Is Announced
A Murder Is Announced: A Miss Marple Mystery | Agatha Christie
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Jane Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which read: 'A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6:30 p.m.' Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the ppointed time when, without warning, the lights go out ...

Just started with this! So far it's interesting! And im pretty sure its going to continue that way since it's Agatha Chirstie! This is my first Marple mystery though! Few sentences are hard to grasp but it is common when reading her books!

This was clever, twisty, everything a Christie should be, yet we didn‘t click.

The first third is without Mrs. Marple, and our victim is only introduced after he‘s hit the floor. No hook for me, but I pressed on. While I enjoyed exploring the lush, tangled, very British web woven around the crime, as well as the book‘s discussion of quality of life and will to live, these made the total carnage too distressing for me to enjoy the cheery epilogue!

These last couple of weeks I've been listening to old favorites from my library. Ended up listening to quite a few as I've been “fall cleaning“. Been lots of fun to revisit Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot and Amelia Peabody.

It all starts when an ad is placed in a paper, saying a murder will take place at a local home. It was thought to be a joke, but things unravel when it actually happens as advertised. Plenty of twists in this Ms. Marple novel!

And I made it! My final stats for #StayHome24in48 #readathon is just over 25hrs, 3 books finished(2 crime novels, 1 GN) & 1 almost finished audiobook. Not as great as my normal times but I did battle a pretty bad headache in there as well. I also managed to knock off two more books for my #MarchUnshelfing #challenge & gave away a stack of books to my dad who is where I get my love of reading from but he doesn‘t have the library I‘m lucky to have♥️

I guessed some of the mystery but not much of it in this one. I usually just go along for the ride with Christie novels instead of trying to guess. There was some early suspicions and prejudice about “foreigners”, definitely still relevant today. There were several times that old ladies were called Pussy, which made me laugh. One certain line would be taken very differently now. 😂
This is a book over 200 pages for #scaryscavengerhunt @Clwojick

4thhouseontheleft That are definitely stereotypes and prejudices in some of Christie‘s books that have not aged well. Great review! 2y

I can't say why I enjoyed this one so much. I called nearly every twist & every secret identity. (I also called some twists & secret identities that failed to materialize, so maybe that's not so much impressive but good odds.) Still, with a fun premise & classically enjoyable Christie characters, the main downside was that there wasn't nearly enough Marple. But I still liked it, and would reread this one.

A short audio book that got me through my Christmas travels to Kentucky and back. Audio books with lots of characters can sometimes be difficult to follow, but this one was exceptionally well done! Emilia Fox, the narrator, varied her voice for each character which was delightfully entertaining. Also, this book was the closest I‘ve come to correctly guessing an Agatha Christie plot, so I‘m an official sleuth now.

🤔 #hoopla changed its audiobook player in the iPhone app, and... it‘s fine? You can swipe right and access your bookmarks, and swipe left to change a couple settings (speed and sleep timers). Apparently the skip forwards and backwards buttons are variable as well, depending on how much you‘re skipping. It looks prettier, but it still lacks the chapter markings I like on Libby. I‘m still undecided about whether this improves my user experience.

What a great concept!

Imagine reading your local newspaper and finding an ad stating that a murder will take place in your town later that night.

What would you do?

Cathythoughts I don‘t know 😧. Fairly shocking news 😳 4y
laurieluna What a dilemma! If you turn up to spectate or to try and stop it are you then potentially the one to be murdered? Or do you stay at home and do nothing? Call everyone you know to stay away? So many possibilities! 4y

JazzFeathers I suppose that in the climate of today people would think it's s joke bug would call the police anyway. And the police would aldo think it a joke, but would look into it anyway. 4y
Billypar And then there's all the etiquette questions it raises- e.g. What do you wear to a murder? Is it catered or do you need to bring something? , etc. 4y

Libby1 @Cathythoughts , @miralunasbooknook , @BookishMe , @JazzFeathers , @Billypar , @Laura317 - questions, questions! Agatha is at her best here. Catering and clothing are issues here! This mystery is so good. It‘s a really fun one - as murder mysteries go. I tried not to work it out so I could just be surprised and I was! This is definitely my favorite AC so far (it‘s my 4th).
A note about this edition tho - wow! It is in gross need of an editor. I hope they aren‘t all this bad but I guess they could be. Wrong words used many times and punctuation errors. Eek! #readwomen #libraryreads

There is something wonderful about reading Agatha Christie even when you figure out who did it half way through the book, you are pulled along magnetically to the very end. May be it is the brilliant conclusion of “how” it was done. She‘s really good about making a reader believe in the feasibility of the deception or criminal act. Her plots are simple. Who cares? I enjoy reading her books. And now another one is ✅!
