A Murder Is Announced
A Murder Is Announced: A Miss Marple Mystery | Agatha Christie
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Jane Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which read: 'A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6:30 p.m.' Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the ppointed time when, without warning, the lights go out ...

Current read is fun. Partially just because I was really feeling it, and partially because I was inspired by the interview with Ben Philippe.

Read this one in January, but was not inspired.
Quick read, food plot, the middle was boring, great ending, but now enough to save the book.

A short audio book that got me through my Christmas travels to Kentucky and back. Audio books with lots of characters can sometimes be difficult to follow, but this one was exceptionally well done! Emilia Fox, the narrator, varied her voice for each character which was delightfully entertaining. Also, this book was the closest I‘ve come to correctly guessing an Agatha Christie plot, so I‘m an official sleuth now.

🤔 #hoopla changed its audiobook player in the iPhone app, and... it‘s fine? You can swipe right and access your bookmarks, and swipe left to change a couple settings (speed and sleep timers). Apparently the skip forwards and backwards buttons are variable as well, depending on how much you‘re skipping. It looks prettier, but it still lacks the chapter markings I like on Libby. I‘m still undecided about whether this improves my user experience.

Thank you so much @quietjenn for the amazing Agatha Christie books and goodies for #achristieswapisannounced !! I‘m afraid not all the snacks survived long enough to take this photo... the books are perfect, I ADORE scented candles and the tote and pouch are perfect for work! Thank you @Sophoclessweetheart for organising too, this was my first swap and I‘m so grateful for how smoothly it all went!

NOW fingers crossed that your package arrives! I'm so bummed out that you don't have it already, but hopefully it's just weather delays and it will be there soon.

I kid you not, that is a direct quote!! 🤣 I know I‘m being super juvenile and the character was just using slang from that time period referring to old ladies (specifically Miss Marple) but I was listening to the audiobook at work and almost died from holding in my laughter! 😆

Tiglath Pileser rocks!

One of my other favourites is Lady Jane Grey, the malevolent grey cat from Dickens‘s Bleak House.

What a great concept!

Imagine reading your local newspaper and finding an ad stating that a murder will take place in your town later that night.

What would you do?

Cathythoughts I don‘t know 😧. Fairly shocking news 😳 1y
laurenbescoby What a dilemma! If you turn up to spectate or to try and stop it are you then potentially the one to be murdered? Or do you stay at home and do nothing? Call everyone you know to stay away? So many possibilities! 1y

JazzFeathers I suppose that in the climate of today people would think it's s joke bug would call the police anyway. And the police would aldo think it a joke, but would look into it anyway. 1y
Billypar And then there's all the etiquette questions it raises- e.g. What do you wear to a murder? Is it catered or do you need to bring something? , etc. 1y
Laura317 @Billypar I hadn‘t thought about that. I hope it‘s catered. 1y
Libby1 @Cathythoughts , @miralunasbooknook , @BookishMe , @JazzFeathers , @Billypar , @Laura317 - questions, questions! Agatha is at her best here. Catering and clothing are issues here! This mystery is so good. It‘s a really fun one - as murder mysteries go. I tried not to work it out so I could just be surprised and I was! This is definitely my favorite AC so far (it‘s my 4th).
A note about this edition tho - wow! It is in gross need of an editor. I hope they aren‘t all this bad but I guess they could be. Wrong words used many times and punctuation errors. Eek! #readwomen #libraryreads

Forgot to post my November list yesterday! This was a lower month... had a bit of a reading slump. Too many books on the nightstand, and nothing really pulling me in—felt like I was never going to finish anything! I gave up on a few and will go back to them later. In spite of the slump, I hit my Goodreads goal of 100 this month! Hoping to finish the rest of my challenges in December.

There is something wonderful about reading Agatha Christie even when you figure out who did it half way through the book, you are pulled along magnetically to the very end. May be it is the brilliant conclusion of “how” it was done. She‘s really good about making a reader believe in the feasibility of the deception or criminal act. Her plots are simple. Who cares? I enjoy reading her books. And now another one is ✅!

I‘ve only finished two books so far this month, and it‘s been slow going on the other two I am attempting to actively read at the moment! Lately I‘ve been focusing on podcasts for my commute, but I think what I might need is a nice dose of Agatha Christie instead. Starting this one this morning...

Everything you expect from an Agatha Christie mystery. Suspicions abound, people are not who they seem. In addition, a nice tableau of post-war England with discussions of illegal bartering to get extra butter, mistrust of foreigners, and the general mood after ww2. #mysteries #agathachristie
