These Old Shades | Georgette Heyer
26 posts | 34 read | 27 to read
Set in the Georgian period, about 20 years before the Regency, These Old Shades is considered to be the book that launched Heyer's career. It features two of Heyer's most memorable characters: Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, and Leonie, whom he rescues from a life of ignomy and comes to love and marry. The Duke is known for his coldness of manner, his remarkable omniscience, and his debauched lifestyle. Late one evening, he is accosted by a young person dressed in ragged boy's clothing running away from a brutal rustic guardian. The Duke buys "Leon" and makes the child his page. "Leon" is in fact Leonie, and she serves the Duke with deep devotion. When he uncovers the true story of her birth, he wreaks an unforgettable revenge on her sinister father in a chilling scene of public humiliation. PRAISE FOR GEORGETTE HEYER: "Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit." Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC "Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." Publishers Weekly "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." Katie Fforde "Absolute monarch of the Regency romance." Kirkus Reviews

I‘ve been telling everyone how much I am enjoying Georgette Heyer‘s mystery novels although I‘ve never read her romances, so a friend has lent me a few. In this one an English Duke in mid C18th France gets more than he bargains for when he rescues a peasant boy from his abusive family. The atmosphere is very different from the mysteries, but there is the same strength of plotting and characterisation. Most enjoyable. #romantsy

LeahBergen I liked this one, too, although I found it quite different in tone from her later Regency romances. There‘s a sequel (well, a sort of sequel, about their child) 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm the opposite - I've read almost all of her romances, but none of her mysteries!! Which one is your favorite/a good place to start? 3mo
CarolynM @LeahBergen My friend has promised to lend me that one soon. I‘m looking forward to meeting their offspring😆 3mo

CarolynM @TheAromaofBooks I‘d start with one where Hemingway is the junior detective - Death in the Stocks and Behold, Here‘s Poison are both really good. I‘ve been doing them on audio and I absolutely recommend it. Matt Addis‘s character voices are fabulous. (edited) 3mo
Cathythoughts Sounds good. I‘m definitely going to try get this coming year. Lovely pic ❤️ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh thank you!! I really want to read some of her mysteries this coming year as I have heard they are very good!! I will say that while I enjoyed These Old Shades, it does have a different tone from most of her romances (for one, it's set earlier). Cotillion and Arabella are two of my favorites. 3mo
CarolynM @Cathythoughts I think you will enjoy her🙂 3mo
CarolynM @TheAromaofBooks Arabella is one of the books my friend lent to me. I think it might be my next read. 🙂 3mo

#Libro3 #Rosa #Storico ⭐⭐⭐

@thearomaofbooks @hes7 @readergrrl I will try to get this sent off early next week.
#bookspin (Februrary)
Overall I am glad read this because it is out of my normal reading comfort zone.
With that said, I don't think I would have finished it if it would not have been for #LMPBC
I just felt like it moved too slow for me, and there were parts that I was lost or thought why is this here.

TheAromaofBooks I felt like this one was very different from the other Heyer books I've read. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as an introduction to her writing. 2y
cwarnier @hes7 I sent off the book (from SD) on Monday. Tracking said it should get to you Saturday.

TheAromaofBooks I actually have never received @readergrrl 's book or my own - are those still with you @hes7 ? 2y

@cwarnier Finally finished this novel! I don‘t know what took me so long! Just busy, I guess... Fun read! I enjoyed the dialogue and time period. I started the next book in our #LMPBC group, The Knockout Queen, yesterday and I can‘t put it down! I must be getting out of my book slump. Yay!! I‘ll be mailing that one out by the end of the week!

Vansa I love Georgette Heyer's books! Have you read the sequel to this, dealing with their son's story? It's called Devil's Cub. 2y
Readergrrl @Vansa No, not yet! I‘ll put it on my TBR wish list! Thanks! 2y
cwarnier It showed up today in the mail! 2y
Readergrrl @cwarnier Excellent! I‘ll be mailing out The Knockout Queen later today! 2y

Check-in post for #LMPBC #GroupR - The book I sent @Readergrrl (you know, on Jan 4...) is finally IN CONNECTICUT - as of yesterday, in Manchester. Has everyone else received their books for this month?? I still haven't gotten the one that @hes7 mailed me & I wasn't sure if Hallie & @cwarnier received their books yet??

hes7 The book to you was in Columbus last night, so that‘s better than Iowa. 😂 I‘m still waiting to get my next book. 2y

#BookReport - Another solid reading week. Checked off five of these books plus the tagged book. The rest of these, plus four Kindle books, are what remains on my #BookSpinBingo card so I am using #DashingDecember as an incentive to get them finished!! More on that during tomorrow's #WeeklyForecast...

@Cinfhen @Andrew65

Andrew65 Working your way through them well. 👏👏👏 2y
Cinfhen I have 4 kindle boxes left on my Bingo board too!! Which tells me I‘m not much of a Kindle reader but that doesn‘t stop me from buying those #DailyDeals 😜 2y

Kristin_Reads Newbie question... what is bookspin? I see so many posts with that #. 🤔 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Kristin_Reads - You've come to the right place as I actually host the #BookSpin challenge!! The basic concept is that you choose 20 books you've been meaning to read & put them on a numbered list. On the 2nd of every month I draw 2 numbers & everyone tries to read those books from their lists - so everyone is reading different books but the same numbers, if that makes sense!! Those 2 are BookSpin & DoubleSpin. Some participants decided that ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) they wanted to read more than just 2 books from their lists each month so I added the Bingo part - every month I also draw out ALL the numbers into a randomized bingo board & people try to score a bingo by reading the matching numbers. (For instance, this month the bottom row is numbers 13, 20, 9, 15, & 14, so if you read those books from your list, you score a bingo!) I made a master post with more details ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) which is here - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 - Just let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to join!! Because it's a monthly challenge, you can jump in at any time, or take a break at any time, or however works best for you. It's just a fun way to encourage people to read books they've been meaning to read already!! @Kristin_Reads 2y
Kristin_Reads I‘m so glad I asked! I‘d love to join! Thank you for filling me in and for the invitation. I have a huge stack of unread books (one from 2006 😦) that I‘d like tackle in 2021. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Kristin_Reads - Yay!! I usually tag everyone who is interested a week before I draw the numbers to remind them to make their lists, so I'll add you to the list!! Just make sure you tag me whenever you post your list - that way I'll know to let you know when the numbers are up!! 2y
Kristin_Reads @TheAromaofBooks Thank you! So excited! 2y

This one started a bit slow, but I ended up really enjoying this tale of intrigue & romance. I wasn't surprised to find that this is one of Heyer's first books - it's a little more ponderous (and French lol) than her later books, so I don't think I would recommend this one as a starting point if you've never read her before. Still a fun & entertaining adventure. This was an #LMPBC read so it will be heading off to @Readergrrl hopefully next week!

TheAromaofBooks Making great progress on #BookSpinBingo mostly thanks to reading almost all fluff this month 😂 I actually finished this one yet, so it didn't qualify for #DashingDecember - I'm starting that readathon this morning with The Twelve Dates of Christmas.

mabell I haven‘t read this one yet. I still have quite a few of the historical fiction and romances to read (Cotillion is my favorite of the latter). I‘ve read the mysteries a million times, though! (Except for Penhallow 👎 and Unfinished Clue, which is ok) @Chrissyreadit gave me Toll-Gate and I am so excited to read that one!! It sounds like mystery and regency romance, so a super combo! 😄 2y

Super excited about the #DashingDecember Readathon!!! I have ten books left on my #BookSpinBingo board, so my goal is to clear the board by the end of the readathon!!! I'm about halfway through the tagged book, so it's possible that I'll only have nine books to go by the time the readathon starts haha

@Andrew65

This was a surprisingly engaging book. I enjoyed it as a before-bed read with fun characters and dialogue. The story was intriguing, though not so complex that I missed much when I fell asleep while reading. I had some issues with the romantic element (namely the cringeworthy age difference) and it was a bit silly, overall, but it was nice to feel transported into Georgian era Paris.

LeahBergen Yes, it was super silly (but I still enjoyed it 😆). 3y
saresmoore @LeahBergen So did I! But I just finished Sprig Muslin and liked it even more. Lots of silly antics. 3y

I hate to say it but I did not like this book! I finished it but I hate read it 🙈 Mostly I just did not like the relationship between the Duke & Leonie. He treated her like a child; she acted like one. Sometimes she would act like a dog, sitting at his feet admiring him. I just was not feeling it. I did laugh out loud several times but that wasn‘t enough to save the book for me. I‘ll try one more by her though because I do want to like her!

Linsy I hated that about it too!!! I‘m told I need to retry another of hers though, that this wasn‘t a good starting point. 3y
Beatlefan129 Can we talk about those pancakes though? They look amazing! 3y
Bookish_B @Linsy Right? But it‘s weird because reviews/articles I‘ve seen say it‘s a fan favorite and I am completely baffled. I definitely will try something else by her though. 3y

I‘m currently reading this Georgette Heyer and loving it!

This one is set a little earlier in time than her usual Regency era novels (in about 1785) and opens with the Duke of Avon mincing along the streets of Paris in his red high heels and purple cloak. 😆

Georgette Heyer - These old Shades ****

It was the OSRBC's old school read of september. I just finished the devastatingly horrible new school read and found this book far more pleasing. It's really old school and British though, like Austen and Brönte. So there's humor, quite a few misunderstandings and they drink a lot of tea and French wine. But if you crave a sex-scene, you'll starve ?
