Death in the Stocks | Georgette Heyer
post image

One of the main characters in a book that I recently read kept mentioning that Georgette Heyer was one of her favourite authors. Not having read any books by this author I have decided to reserve a copy at the Library. From her comments I have a feeling that my partner may read it before I do.

CarolynM There are quite a few of us Georgette Heyer fans here😊 Enjoy! 7h

Almost every time I read a new Heyer I decide it's up there as my favourite! This one isn't quite as funny as Sophy, but I think it shades it for romance - Sir Richard's declaration made me swoon.

LeahBergen I loved this one! And I‘m totally the same: “Is this one my favourite?” 😂 2w
MrsMalaprop Need to read more of her! I have Sophie on my shelf. 2w
willaful I've always been partial to her funny ones. 2w
kspenmoll I just started a biography on her. 2w

A cosy 1930s murder mystery written with a sense of fun. I loved Randall and his witty one-liners and the diabolical aunts. The plot was less of a feature than all of the family intrigue (possibly too many characters?) but came together with a nice solution at the end. A good escapist read.

kspenmoll Her mysteries are such fun! 1mo
CarolynM It‘s the characters that make all Georgette Heyer‘s books. I‘ve done most of the mysteries on audio, the narrator makes the characters even more delicious than they are on the page. 1mo

Regency Buck | Georgette Heyer
post image

I took this Georgette Heyer off the shelf today (but then had to check Goodreads to see if I‘d already read it 😆).

AvidReader25 Do you have a favorite Heyer? I‘ve only read two and would love to read more! 2mo
LeahBergen @AvidReader25 I don‘t really have a favourite as I‘ve enjoyed all the ones I‘ve read. 😆 Hmm… maybe The Grand Sophy, Sylvester, Cotillion, Friday‘s Child? I‘m really enjoying this one so far! It was her first novel set in the Regency era (the previous ones were set in the Georgian era) and I guess it kickstarted the Regency novel as a genre. 2mo
Cathythoughts I‘m loving the cover on the book 😍 2mo

LeahBergen @Cathythoughts It‘s pretty! 2mo
Reggie Lolol‘ed on the checking of Goodreads to see if you‘ve read it. There‘s a couple of books lately from back in the day that have left me thinking-have I? 2mo
CarolynM Sylvester is my current handbag book. I‘m not loving it as much as Sophy yet😆 2mo
AvidReader25 @LeahBergen Thank you!!! I loved The Grand Sophy so much. It was my first. I‘ll try the others! 2mo
LeahBergen @Reggie 😆😆 And I expect it will only get worse! 2mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Sylvester grew on me. Maybe it will for you, too! 2mo
LeahBergen @AvidReader25 The Grand Sophy was my first, too. 😀 2mo
AvidReader25 @LeahBergen I love that! It was so good. 💙 2mo

It‘s hard to pick a favorite Heyer, especially between the mysteries, but this one may be it!
#1939 for #192025

Librarybelle Awesome! I keep saying I need to read more of her books! 2mo
zezeki Hi, just wanted to check how did your trip to Croatia went? 😅 2mo
mabell @zezeki It was wonderful! We started in Zurich and ended in Madrid, so we didn‘t get to spend a lot of time in any one place, but we did get to stay on Hvar for 5 days! Stari Grad is one of the most lovely places I‘ve ever been. And we loved winding around in Diocletian‘s Palace. 2mo
mabell @zezeki We didn‘t make it outside the Palace much (between our short time in Split and the little one), but I managed to sneak in each of the bookstores you mentioned! I planned to show the books I bought at each destination, but we‘ll see if I get there 🤣 I would love to go back to Croatia and see other parts of the country! 2mo
zezeki Glad you enjoyed your vacation! And managed to buy some books! ☺️ 2mo

This was SO MUCH FUN. I loved Miles & Abigail—their banter, humor, and romance, as well as the contrast & balance that becomes apparent between these two such well-matched characters. Heyer just gets everything right: Abigail‘s pitch-perfect near-caricature relatives—lovable and infuriating by turns—a surprising but thoroughly appealing male love interest, and comeuppance where it is due. ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) The ending is WAY too abrupt, but also adorable. All the praise for my May #DoubleSpin + 1966 pick for #192025. @TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle 4mo
Ruthiella Love your paperback collection! 4mo
LeahBergen I liked this one, too! 4mo

TheAromaofBooks This is a favorite of mine. One thing I love is how often Heyer writes about slightly older heroines - instead of her being 16 or 17 and yearning for love, she's in her late 20s and happily single. And the way these two hit it off as friends at first just delights me! 4mo
Librarybelle Lovely paperback edition! 4mo
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Librarybelle Thank you! Library book sales have provided so many treasures! 4mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I loved that, too! This one could so easily have been about the niece, but Heyer chooses the less-conventional (and far more interesting) heroine instead. And the friends first vibe is my favorite (forever influenced by Anne and Gilbert!) 4mo
CarolynM There are so many Heyer‘s I fear I‘ll never read them all, but I will look out for this one😊 3mo

I think this is a lesser known Heyer, but for me it is up there with the best of them. Romance, comedy and great characters. Totally delightful, but have you ever seen a less appropriate cover for a Heyer @LeahBergen ?
