This was a very powerful read for me. It was not an easy read, Solomon presents a brutal situation. However nothing felt gratuitous to me. The characters were interesting and diverse. Despite the diversity, none of the primary characters felt like a stereotype. I also liked that despite all the darkness presented in the novel - the author does give the reader a glimmer of hope.

A dark sci-fi novel about a spaceship with a highly stratified racial social system that has devolved back into slavery. Solomon weaves an absolutely fascinating tale, and I loved the exploration of gender identity as well. Definitely not a light or happy read, but wonderfully crafted and well worth a read for sci-fi fans!

Unpopular opinion, but I had trouble with this one. The writing was fine, but the main plot was stretched out across the book in such a way that I lost interest. I also had difficulty envisioning the mechanics and layout of the ship, and being able to visualize things when reading SFF is hugely important, IMHO. I almost feel like this would‘ve worked better as a collection of short stories - vignettes of the various characters and their lives.

A dystopia featuring a spaceship that is supposedly on its way to a new planet. Darker-skinned people are housed on the lower levels and treated as less than human, while light-skinned people control the upper decks. TW for all kinds of trauma.

Aster is a healer who has learned to survive in the lower deck slums. She is queer, black, and neuro-diverse. A suspicious death leads her to clues her mother left that might lead to a way off the ship.

Another gut-punch of a book but so beautifully imagined and lovingly sketched. Aster will stick with me as will the many, many lessons of the cruelties humans are capable of. What a difficult, gorgeous read.

“Too much of my day is spent decoding euphemisms, then dealing with the aftermath when I decode them wrong.” This isn‘t the first quote that has me reading one of the main characters as autistic; I wonder if the author will address this as directly as they do another character‘s transness, or if it‘ll remain coded. I do think spec fic allows a bit more for coding, particularly when other identity words aren‘t used. #queerbooks

Such a good book, powerfully written with a memorable cast. It's a counterweight to the overly optimistic, and very white, perspective that others in the same genre often suffers from.

This reminds me of Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale in the psychological weight of the book. I felt so miserable for the characters and what they had to endure, and it felt like it would never end. But that discomfort, I think, is necessary to understand the story.

I'd describe this as American slavery in space. The beginning was great and I was instantly absorbed– loved the main characters, the diversity (which never felt forced), and the gradual world building without any info dumps. The ending was super disappointing though. It ended right when things were getting interesting and all that character and world building was wasted. Still, a good read despite the unbalanced plot.

This is the best space sci-fi I‘ve read in a long time. It‘s fascinating, smart, harrowing, & propulsive. The main character is non-binary & neurodiverse & relatable & awesome. As much as I hate to bring a deplorable bigot into this, I kept thinking while reading: Eat your heart out, Orson Scott Card! Solomon tackles tough issues (not just space science stuff, but real, big issues), but never detracts from the riveting & engrossing story. So good.

I‘m sad this immersive #audiobook, brilliantly performed by Cherise Boothe, is finished. It‘s a dystopian antebellum-type plantation setting on a starship that‘s been travelling for generations, with dark-skinned labourers under brutal guard in the lower decks and light-skinned people in charge. It‘s the #LGBTQ characters that I really fell for, especially Aster: Black, gender-variant, neuroatypical, healer & scientist. I hope a sequel is coming.

This was a re-read for my book group (chosen by me). I felt more strongly the star maps and their road to freedom this time, and how little upper-class (upper-deck, in this book) women could intervene in the patriarchy even while they perpetrated harm on the darker-skinned and Black folks of lower decks. The mix of seeming fantasy, science, a recreation of slavery, and more, is painfully superb.

I'm really enjoying revisiting the books I've read this year. Some, I'd completely forgotten about. Not this one though. I read it fairly recently.

Set on a spaceship, people are divided up by race/class, and there's an all-powerful ruler - an after-the-apocalypse story, with a mystery neatly tied in. But this is no teens save the world scenario. The characters are diverse and older. And I enjoyed it.

Not my preferred genre but this book was an OK read. A spaceship of segregated passengers has been travelling through space searching for a habitable planet for over 300 years. Aster, a resident of the lower decks, learns truths from her mother‘s coded science notes and sets about righting centuries of wrongs. This book has some nice science references and a strong racial message, however it didn‘t excite me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
