Dear Martin | Nic Stone

I dread the day that we have this conversation with our boys but we must equip them with any and every tool available to them.

Reggie I listen to This American Life the podcast and one of their episodes is called The Birds and the Bees. It was about the important conversations you got when you were a kid. Kamau Bell is on there talking about how he was 8 and his mother asked him what he wanted for breakfast. He thought someone was dying because it wasn‘t his birthday. But that was the day she had the conversation of what it meant for his life, having the color of skin he had. 2mo
Reggie That was a couple of years ago. The fact those conversations even have to happen suck. But now it‘s important to have them. 2mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz This is so heartbreaking💔 2mo

I had time between meetings today so I stopped by the campus bookstore and snagged these two titles. #bookhaul #pocauthors #readdiversebooks #ownvoices #weneeddiversebooks #yalit #blitsy #blacklitsy

HOTPock3tt On the come up was AMAZING!! My fave read of 2019! ♥️😃 2mo
Chelleo @HOTPock3tt yasssss! I‘m looking forward to it. Will likely bump up to the top of my TBR list. 2mo

Karkar I just finished Dear Martin....so good!!! 2mo
tjwill Both great choices! 2mo
rachelm Awesome choices! Loooved On the Come Up. Can‘t wait for the movie! 2mo
Chelleo @Karkar Sadly, I‘ve owned the ebook for months and still haven‘t read it but I couldn‘t pass up the print deal. 2mo
MidnightBookGirl Loved On the Come Up! 2mo
CoffeeNBooks Dear Martin is really good! 2mo
RebL I just finished OTCU maybe 5 minutes ago. I like it even better than THUG. 2mo
Chelleo @RebL Really?! Ok, I can‘t read both books at the same time, how am I going to choose?!?!? 😭 2mo
RebL @Chelleo Yes. I liked both, but Bri is so much more herself (for a fictional character). She‘s not a navel gazer, though her tendency to act first and think later gets her in trouble. I like her arc. Plus the wordplay is fun. 2mo
Chelleo @RebL It‘s a great review! You should post it. Thanks! 2mo

MaureenMc I recently listened to this audio, too. Great story, and I really liked the narrator. 2mo
Louise How was it? 2mo
Chelleo @Louise I put it down. It was slow moving and I just couldn‘t get into it. I‘ll revisit it soon. 2mo

Listening to this #audiobook and I‘m loving it! The stories are varied and so confirming for me, a biracial daughter of a Filipina immigrant and Black father. The stories of language (I speak English but my mother speaks a Filipino dialect), hair, food (they mention lumpia and pancit...my favorites) and music (NWA and gangsta rap we‘re part of my teenage soundtrack. I‘m only a 1/4 in and can‘t wait to hear the rest! #ownvoices #diversebooks

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds great, I‘m still on the library‘s hold list for this one and I can‘t wait. 5mo
dalma_st_paul On my TBR this year. Thanks for reminding me😊 I'm really excited for this one. 5mo

The Crossover | Kwame Alexander

Mehso-so

Although I believe this would make a great read for younger teens, especially black boys, this was not for me. Laced with poetry throughout it was a bit jumpy to follow in audiobook format. I‘m sure print is the ideal medium for this. Nice for reluctant readers and filled with discussion worthy topics: sports, health, family/sibling relationships and more.

⭐️⭐️💫

Butterfinger I adore Kwame Alexander. I follow him on Facebook and he just seems so friendly and relatable. I want to meet him so badly. I agree. I think the text would be more easy to get. 6mo
Addison_Reads My nephew loves this book, so yes, if you have a reluctant reader try this one. He tried the audio, but he said he liked reading it better. 6mo
Tamra The printed format is good! 6mo

What‘s not to love? I want to be her when I grow up and she‘s my best friend (in my head). Love hearing her inner thoughts behind some of the more well known events during her time in the White House. 12/1/18. #blitsy #blacklitsy #readdiversebooks #pocauthors #blackauthors #readblackwomen #readblackauthors

Sweettartlaura I can‘t wait to get to this. She is such an inspiration ❤️ 8mo
riversong153 This memoir was so awesome! 8mo
MicheleinPhilly I‘m still on such a high after seeing her on Thursday. Absolutely loved this book and love her. (And Phoebe Robinson called her “my new best friend” when she was introducing her. ☺️) 8mo
RebL I‘m dying! I decided to wait until Christmas (it‘s advent after all) to read this book even though I bought it upon publication. I would probably fall over dead if I saw Michelle Obama, @MicheleinPhilly. 8mo
Blaire I‘m 90th on the library waitlist for this one...will prob end up buying it. Can‘t wait 6 months! 8mo

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I love this idea!! But alas I'm not a US Litten. Maybe next time around. 💕 8mo
Chelleo @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I know 🥺 Im hoping I can get through this first one in order to figure out all the logistics so I can open it up internationally next year. 8mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Chelleo That's totally fair. I hope it's a success, I really do love the concept. 8mo
Mitch @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego me too...I‘ll be with you next year when you cross borders. It sound an amazing swap..have fun, can‘t wait to see the choices and add to my TBR! 8mo

KathyWheeler I don‘t do swaps because I know myself — I‘ve gone into them with good intentions and then don‘t follow through. However, I will be looking at the choices with real interest in order to add to my TBR. Have fun! 8mo
Jess7 Thanks for tagging me. I‘m out this time, but I think it is a great idea and I‘m happy to share! I have read several books that I think would be great for this though! this one is excellent and it hasn‘t gotten as much attention lately because it was published at the beginning of 2018: 8mo
AmyG This is a wonderful idea. Gives ne an opportunity to send a Litten one of my most favorte books. Thanks @Chello for doing this swap. 8mo

Chelleo @LapReader @RaimeyGallant Noted! Thanks for your interest...hope to offer internationally for next year. (edited) 8mo
Sweettartlaura Can I ask... why is the Open Date at the end of Black History Month instead of the beginning? Also, what is the swap exactly? 2/3 books? More, less? Please & thank you 🙏🏻 8mo
Chelleo @Sweettartlaura It‘s a way of extending Black History Month beyond February. It should also be a bit easier to ID books and cultural items as they‘ll be highlighted throughout the month. The swap package details are on the form page. 8mo
Sweettartlaura @Chelleo Oh, nice! Thanks - I‘ll check it out 🙂. It‘s been a while since I did a swap - this sounds interesting. 8mo
4thhouseontheleft I had decided not to do any swaps next year, but I‘m really tempted to participate in this one! 8mo
Chelleo @4thhouseontheleft you have some time to decide, no pressure 😜 8mo
Dana1084 Oh sweet! This sounds like a fabulous swap!! 8mo
Chelleo @Dana1084 Glad you like it. Hope you can join us! 8mo
Bookladylinda @Chelleo thank you for the tag, I appreciate it and it looks like fun but I may have to sit this one out. 7mo
Nute Thanks for the tag. I want to participate, but feeling leary due to a failed pen pal connection. My match turned out to be non-responsive after the first exchange of information. That has left a bitter taste for this type of connection. It's hurtful when anticipating a good thing that is never going to happen. This is a wonderful idea and I am hoping for a great success! 7mo
Chelleo @Nute I totally understand. I hate to hear that you‘ve had bad experiences with Pen Pals. 🥺 So rude and disrespectful. Hope that when the time comes for you to jump in again it‘s all you hope it to be. 🤗 7mo
Gaylagal2 I'm in and looking forward to this so much! 🤙 7mo
Chelleo @Gaylagal2 yeaaaah! Can‘t wait! 7mo
Kammbia1 Thanks for the tag! I was off Litsy for awhile. 7mo
Mimi28 Hey, I need to remove myself from this swap. I‘m sorry. I spent too much this Christmas and all my minimum payments are going to go up. I‘ll barely have enough for laundry. I‘m sorry. I hope you understand!! ❤️❤️❤️ 7mo
Chelleo @Mimi28 thanks for letting me know 🤗 7mo
Mimi28 Sorry, thanks for understanding ❤️❤️ I hope it is a great success!! ❤️❤️ 7mo
Avanders Hey — I‘m probably way late here, but if you need someone to send a package (reasons such as 👆🏽), let me know! 6mo
Chelleo @Avanders Thanks! I‘ll keep that in mind. There were a few early hiccups that were quickly sorted out. So far, so good. 🤞🏾 6mo
Avanders Glad to hear it 😊🤞🏽🤞🏽 Hope everyone follows through! ♥️ 6mo

This is a collection. I understood about half of the stories in the collection, and I liked about half of those. The ones I liked, I really liked. Read Harder Challenge: #8 - a comic written or illustrated by a person of color.

This is one of my favorite panels.
