Week of March 14-20 I may be too ambitious with the 6 books but we shall see! My hold of Citizen arrived yesterday for #pop21 #BLMreadinglist and Miss Burma is for #ReadingAsia21 #Mynamar Lamplighters is an #ARC publishing Tue and the other 2 kind of winked at me!!! I‘m almost done with Lost Apothecary and it‘s turning out to be a delightful audio/

Megabooks I‘ve been sick all afternoon/evening. I‘m going to have get my esophagus stretched ASAP. 😭 I‘m sick of procedures/surgeries. Idk what I‘m going to do without my dad with me. I‘m in so much pain. 3y
Megabooks Minor Feelings and Apothecary are coming for me in the next two weeks too! 3y
Cinfhen Oh no!!!! I‘m sitting here feeling helpless, why do you need that particular procedure?? I have so little medical knowledge but it seems severe. I‘m sorry if I‘m infringing , I‘m just so worried about you @Megabooks I wish I lived nearby....I‘m so sorry you‘re in such pain 💔 3y

Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks dear friend. I just appreciate you listening. Basically they use a scope to thread a balloon to the bottom of my esophagus and inflate it to stretch out the area. I‘ve had it done once. I talked to an on call nurse and she thought could probably wait until Monday to get worked in for it as long as I only eat soft food. Salty warm broth helps, so that‘s good. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen oh you asked why! I have a specific, local allergic-type reaction in lower esophagus called eosinophilic esophagitis. From time to time, it swells enough to block the entrance to my stomach. It is as uncomfortable/painful as it sounds. The above procedure is the treatment. I take prescription Prevacid twice a day (4 otc pills every day). It helps some but mine is not particularly responsive to meds. 3y
Cinfhen Is this related to your gluten allergy @Megabooks ? Are you able to keep the broth down?? I‘m keeping you in my thoughts/ hoping you find some comfort soon 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen no, they‘re separate conditions. I kept the broth down. It seemed to help with the swelling and discomfort. Thanks so much. Just trying to make it until I can get worked in! 💕 3y
Librarybelle Good luck! 3y
Cinfhen Thanks @Librarybelle ❣️ 3y
Laughterhp I really like the cover of The Lamplighters! I love the colors for some reason. 3y
Cinfhen Lamplighters has a really striking cover @Laughterhp although I‘ve seen mixed reviews for the book 🙄 3y

A Colony in a Nation | Chris Hayes

Another #BLMReadingList adjacent pick, I found this to be a great follow up to Michelle Alexander‘s phenomenal The New Jim Crow. Hayes book is about how our inner cities and black communities are policed like colonies, inside our larger nation. It‘s insightful for different reasons, and although I‘d recommend Alexander‘s book 1st (always!!) this one helped me understand how policing works very different in some places than others!

And for today, one that is sitting on my #BLMTBR list. I added this one to my to-read list the LAST time we were arguing about who has statues & monuments (and now that the topic has rolled back around, I‘m reminded that I wanted to read this book). It came to my attention then learning that the “Father of Modern Gynecology” who has multiple statues and did great things for women‘s health experimented on slaves, without anesthesia More info ⤵️

Powered_By_Plants Chilling 😞 , reminds me of the treatment in the concentration camps. Those poor women 💕 4y

Butterfinger Makes me ill. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Powered_By_Plants Exactly, I understand that he was a product of his time, he made great medical advances, but come on...as a doctor he understood bodily disease enough to know what issue they had white women had, he knew their bodies were the same, but he used them to do things he could not get away with on white women of his day. 🤮 4y
GingerAntics I haven‘t read this book, but I have read other books and articles on this topic. It‘s horrible. 4y

Today‘s #Recommendsday is a fascinating read on so many levels, history of medicine, how people were and are treated differently by medicine, and medical profit. But it is also a very personal story of uncovering ones history and reclaiming it. However this is not by a black author, so it will not count if you are working on BlackPublishingPower... but it‘s still an important read

Wonderful play, certainly deserving of all of the accolades it‘s received: Pulitzer, Tony and so many more. Knowing that James Earl Jones originated the role had me picturing him and hearing his voice throughout. #ReadHarder2020 #challenge #6 #ownvoices #BLMReadinglist

ChasingOm Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, with his voice in your head. 😄 4y

Lyrical, gorgeous, raw-there is a lot of graceful power packed into this slim volume. I love this poetry collection and look forward to reading more from Jericho Brown. #poetry #ownvoices #blacklivesmatter #diversespines #BLMReadingList

And today I‘m adding a #BLMReadingList adjacent read, it is not by a black author, so will NOT count for those of you doing BlackPublishingPower. It isn‘t even specifically about race, but again like White Trash (I‘ll tag it below and posted about it the other day) it‘s about class and discrimination in housing and it‘s worth a read to understand city housing issues.

KVanRead This was so eye opening for me. Never realized just how central housing issues are to well, everything. Highly recommend. 4y
ChasingOm I‘ve had this on audio for years, but want it in print so I can highlight. 4y
MallenNC Yes! Evicted is so good and eye-opening. 4y
Megabooks Great audiobook!! 4y

And one that‘s sitting on my #BLMTBR pile, I really need to read it this year. There is always more to keep reading and learning, keep an open mimd and make it a lifelong project, the more you read, the more connections you‘ll make!

Jee_HookedOnBookz An eye-opening read, but I preferred 'So You Want to Talk About Race' and find it more accessible :) 4y

Today‘s #Recommendsday is one to read after you‘ve read some of the other recommendations. If you‘ve read a few and find yourself good and mad, pick this one up and be good and mad in good company, and then find ways to use that rage as fuel for change.
