Penguin English Library a Room with a View
Penguin English Library a Room with a View | E M Forster
The Penguin English Library Edition of A Room with a View by E. M. Forster '"But you do," he went on, not waiting for contradiction. "You love the boy body and soul, plainly, directly, as he loves you, and no other word expresses it ..." Lucy has her rigid, middle-class life mapped out for her until she visits Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte, and finds her neatly ordered existence thrown off balance. Her eyes are opened by the unconventional characters she meets at the Pension Bertolini: flamboyant romantic novelist Eleanor Lavish, the Cockney Signora, curious Mr Emerson and, most of all, his passionate son George. Lucy finds herself torn between the intensity of life in Italy and the repressed morals of Edwardian England, personified in her terminally dull fiance Cecil Vyse. Will she ever learn to follow her own heart? The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Lucy Honeychurch goes to Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte hoping to see the world and expand her mind. She does not plan on meeting George Emerson and his father, 2 “radicals” who believe in “Love & Courage.” When Lucy develops feelings for George despite her engagement to another man(the dull & snobbish Cecil Vyse), she has to make a tough choice. Does she follow convention and do what is expected of her or does she follow her heart?

I listened via audible. I enjoyed this story which was first published in 1908. There were moments that made my jaw drop.

The narrator did a lovely job with all the female characters. I didn‘t care for her performance with most of the male characters.

If you have an interest in how middle class British folk talked and felt in the early 1900s this would be a good read. I found them highly annoying. But I guess that was the point of the novel. A mediocre romance at best.

#bookspin complete! I always feel like novels from this era pass me by a bit… I always miss the scandal (ie; the kiss in the violets) 🙈 and then have to backtrack to figure out what everyone is freaking out about! Predictable but some good dialogue and some pretty funny one-liners.

This book was funny, insightful, cynical, and romantic. What‘s not to like? I‘ve been familiar with the story, watching and rewatching various movie versions for years, but am so glad that I finally read it.

I‘ll give this a pick but it‘s probably more of a so-so. At times it was hard to follow as I found the writing a bit “proper” for lack of a better word which made the sentences garbled and confusing at times. And while the characters could be irritating in their stubbornness, it was a satisfying love story that also said a lot about the socio-economic aspects and sexism of the early 20th century. Glad I finally got around to reading this. 3/5⭐️

Bradleygirl oh it's lovely, the Merchant Ivory version with Helena Bonham Carter (then a mere baby), Julian Sands, & Daniel Day Lewis. Lewis is Cecil and utterly unrecognizable. hope you enjoy! 2y

My sister graciously took my kids this weekend so I could have some time to myself, and grow my ♾ TBR pile.

mandarchy I like how you don't lie to yourself - TBR pile instead of reading all of this in one weekend. If I could just get someone to take my dog and my kid at the same time... Oh - and maybe not even be at home. The dishes even need me. Where can I hide? 2y
Tianarose @mandarchy I hear ya!! I am insanely jealous of people who post stacks like this for their weekly reading! Although since I discovered audiobooks a couple years ago I do manage to squeeze in a few more than I used to and still get all the above done. ( mom of 3 and two dogs!) 2y
mandarchy @Tianarose I don't have the attention span for audio books. I admire people who do and I think audio book crafting is such a cool trend. But I have to read. 2y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Not yet! My guy doesn't want to get his hopes up yet and I don't want to worry about changing plans. We'll likely take a few days to see my parents in PA and grandmother in NY, but that can all be done fairly last minute from NJ. How about you? 2y

A delight. I loved this comedy of manners set in Florence & Surrey. Lucy seeks adventure but still drawn to the safe future laid out for her. Charlotte is wonderfully funny as the martyr we love to hate. Forster captures awkward English manners perfectly. Light but clever prose, not a word wasted, with universal themes of constraints on women, love & breaking from family expectations. Great armchair travel.

I think if I had not seen the movie before reading it, I wouldn‘t have enjoyed this one as much. I love the movie, and I think that helped me enjoy the book even more. 🎥 📖 Basically, the HBCarter version is a pretty spot on copy of the book in the way of dialogue. I enjoyed the scenic descriptions as well. Reading it as an audiobook was enjoyable and I‘d recommend it.

So far, I'm finding most of these characters have a rigidity of manners and thought that is most tiresome. Hopefully that is the point. If not I think I'll find this rough going.

Bradleygirl this is honestly the only book I think i'm quite grateful I saw the movie first before reading. The movie has everything lovely about the book and is much, much easier to process (and funnier). 2y

As a portrait of a young girl‘s coming-of-age in a time before women had the vote, and the class system was very clearly defined, this book has its place as an important book to read. And I‘m glad I read it. But I can‘t say I‘m enjoyed it. There are some moments of comedy in the behaviour of some of the characters - Ms Bartlett‘s attempts at explaining her obviously selfish behaviours as being solely for the sake of etiquette are exquisite...

TheEllieMo ... but there seems to be also a lot of unnecessary nonsense in this book. Forster‘s writing didn‘t make me feel engaged with any of the characters. I fully expected to love this book, so I‘m probably more disappointed with it than if I‘d gone into it with no expectations. 2y
Bradleygirl it's young/early Forster, I agree it has some serious handicaps. This is one of the only books of which I say I loved the movie, much more. 2y

Read this one to follow along with my friend's reading group (#RtC). Hard to get while in a reading slump, but I did ultimately enjoy it. It has all the elements I like in the genre and classical period of literature. Not sure why I never got around to reading it before, considering I've read Howard's End twice.

This is my second novel by E.M. Forster and I do admire how he is able to portray the women‘s mind and life choices. This combined with his love and representation of Italy makes for a quick enjoyable read.
The one thing that did bother me was how the reader is sometimes left out of certain things. I for one would have liked to know what happened in Rome.
Not that it spoiled the story; it just could have added more.

His writing and works are so incredible and i just cant get enough of it! I love his style of writing and i love the story lines he comes out with and i love the way he adds a reality to each fictional piece!
I also loved how at the end of this novel he wrote 'A room without a view' in the appendix! Such a wonderful way to end the novel!
