The Man in the High Castle
The Man in the High Castle | Philip K. Dick
The single most resonant and carefully imagined book of Dicks career. New York Times It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a warand is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake. Winner of the Hugo Award

Been a while since I last spent time with this work.

"We do not have the ideal world, such as we would like, where morality is easy because cognition is easy. Where one can do right with no effort because he can detect the obvious."

This was weird. Not all of the characters were relevant. Plot was weak. Just a lot of people thinking about nothing? The show seems much more engaging. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for innovative premise.

Forgot to post this during yesterday‘s snow storm. ❄️ Very uncharacteristic of me to venture out in bad weather, but something about the way the snow was falling excited me and I wanted to see how it looked covering the train tracks. Survey Question - Would you count this as 1 book or 4 books?

I doubt I'll read any more than The Man in the High Castle. It went too much over my head and the premise was pretty frightening. I would hate to think about Germany and Japan winning and a concentration camp in NYC. Of course, because the occupying government was racist, some Americans took advantage of it to show their true colors. (shudder) If you read it, please help me understand.

After several days of treadmill due to unfit walking conditions, I finally ventured outside. It was 63F degrees (only 3 days ago it was -5!!!), but as you can see it‘s still icy and treacherous. It‘s going to get cold again, and more snow is supposedly on the way. But it did feel good to get out. I walked to the Dunkin‘ Donuts and got a coffee to reward myself for walking outside today. #LitsyWalkers #audiowalk

I am doing so horribly for #24in48 and #24B4Monday. I only managed to finish one book (crazy day). I also accidentally reset my reading timer. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oh well, I must power-through! As for the one book I finished, I‘m pretty conflicted. I enjoyed the details of the alternate world and conceptually, the premise is very interesting. But, I did not enjoy his writing style (not enough emotion) and I didn‘t connect with any of the characters.

Where the Amazon original series fails, I had hoped the book would deliver. I'm so disappointed. Life is too short to read a bad book. I love the idea--this surmises the Reich had won the war--the US is divided between Japan and Germany. The Amazon series has plot holes to drive a Mac truck through. Phillip K. Dick annoyingly verbose. #nope #canteven

BookBabe @DarcysMom @kaye @Bklover Whereabouts do you Littens live? I‘m in eastern Pennsylvania, and we‘ve got highs in the 30s all week. Probably for most of the winter, lol. I‘d love to get in on this #audiowalking thing, but I‘m not sure I‘ll be willing to drag myself outdoors in that cold weather. But I did just get a treadmill! So I‘ll be doing daily walks indoors for sure. (edited) 11mo

Kaye I‘m in Ohio. Our weather is currently nasty. Pouring snow , but I‘ll still walk ,even if it‘s around the block. I need a jumpstart to get moving again. This will help. It‘s sort of a challenge to me. Gotta do it. Our weather hasn‘t been bad up til the last couple of days. If it‘s solid ice out , I‘ll have to walk at the indoor track, but I plan on getting outside at least for an around the block. 11mo
BookBabe @kaye Good for you! Your dedication and decisiveness impress and inspire me. I‘ll try to emulate! 😃👍🏻 11mo
Kaye We‘d love to include you if you‘re up for it. Look up #LitsyWalkers. 💕 11mo
Bklover I‘m in Illinois not too far from St. Louis. We have about 8 inches of snow and ice right now. I‘m going for a walk today though (briefly). I‘ve seen several neighbors out walking so it should be fine. I figure if I fall and break something I‘ll just hop over to Ohio and stay with @kaye 😉. 11mo
Kaye @Bklover Be careful. The ice is scary to walk on. I fell down but I bounced. You can come here if you need taken care of. . 11mo
Bklover @kaye I have enough padding that I‘d probably bounce too!❤️❤️❤️ 11mo
BookBabe @Bklover @Kaye LMAO @ the bouncing!!! 😂😂😂 That‘s so great. 😄👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You know what? I can‘t resist. Count me in for #LitsyWalkers! I‘m starting today. Just go easy on me if I falter (though I‘ll try not to!)—I‘m a hermit and this is a scary commitment for me...but worth it! 🙌🏻 11mo
Kaye I‘m so proud of you @BookBabe for taking that first step. Day one is probably the hardest. Once you get into the routine, you‘ll do great. Remember, it‘s not a race, not a competition. All it is, is for getting people out to walk while enjoying an audiobook. So even if you walk 10 minutes, it‘s 10 more than you would‘ve had before. I bet @MrBook will be proud of you too. 11mo
Bklover Go @BookBabe !!! Proud of you! I‘m kinda proud of all of us. There is no one in the world less athletic than me! 11mo

While the basic setting is the same the book is very different from the TV adaptation. The latter is a rollicking thriller, while the book is much more philosophical and speculates on the nature of fate and reality, with a huge twist at the end.

Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am looking forward to returning to the TV series - somehow I drifted away after season 1.

I‘ve streamed the series and loved the characters, on screen they are rounded and the universe is real an cohesive. I picked up the book knowing it was going to be different but hoping that it would offer more perspective to what I‘d watched. Still got a quarter of the book to go and I‘ve noticed that two of my favourite characters are ones I don‘t like in the book.
