The Last Mapmaker | Christina Soontornvat

Pickpick

An adventure on the high seas with a talented junior mapmaker. I never really thought about how ships figured out where to go to “discover” a new landmass. There was definite emphasis on how there were already people in these places that were claimed to have been found by the empire.

Trix could not remember this and, given her current interest in historical disasters via the I Survive series, I thought she may enjoy a re-listen. It is an amazing story

Some young boys on a soccer team in Thailand were stranded in a cave in 2018 while exploring with their coach. The country and people from across the world came together to save them. Obviously, the rescue was incredible and it‘s a wonderful true story, but the book is written in a way that made it drag even though it was short.

Texreader What a shame! I watched this story unfold with such dread and so happy they were rescued 12mo
AvidReader25 @Texreader It‘s not a bad book! Just maybe for a YA audience and not well paced. 12mo

I was not initially drawn to the book, however, as I read I began to enjoy the suspense being built. As a younger reader I think I really would have liked, “A Wish in the Dark”. There is a sense of mystery and unknown while at the same time adventure.

In Christina Soonttornvat‘s 2020 Newbery winning book “A Wish in the Dark” Pong, who was born in prison, escapes and sees the world is just as wrong and unfair as the life he experienced while in prison. He makes friends along the way and experiences food, people, and life like never before. Nok (prison warden‘s daughter) hunts down Pong through Chattana and she has experiences that make her question her prior reality.
